I could see him getting cast as live action Doom.
If a vibranium shield thrown by Rogue collides with a snowy rockface, it probably causes a small avalanche (from the reverb kickback) to reveal the mountain stone beneath, and the shield's hole is visible. Cap probably has an excellent sense of ballistic trajectory too.
He recovers the shield within a day, maybe with the help of some C4.
