Both groups have similar histories: Bob and Lou we're both in trio, Lou was kicked out of his Dino because J. was a control freak, Grant (Du drummer) was kicked out because Bob was a control freak, both bands and members alike we're the underdogs of the Alternative scene, both bands we're on SST, both gave SST 3 of the GREATEST ALBUMS EVER and to finish it off all 6 men in both trios made me wanna play guitar.
Was so suprised to see both these names on the same video. 120 minutes had to be the best program in MTV history. Always featured great artists such as these two.
in high school 120 Minutes came on a little too late for me to catch on a school night, so i would auto-set our VCR to record it and then watch the next day. this was one of the best eps i ever recorded. aw man, "believe what you're saying" still breaks my effin heart.
Hi, I'm Bob Mould of Sugar and I'm your guest host for the next 120 Minutes on MTV. In the next two hours I'll be performing acoustically and joining me will be ex-Dinosaur Jr bassist and current Sebadoh guitarist, Lou Barlow. We've also got never-before seen live performances by Green Day and Seed and brand new videos from Sinead O'Connor, Live and Rancid. And if that weren't enough, we've got four MTV premiers tonight. We've got Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth, Liz Phair, and right here to kick things off, it's the MTV premier of the new Offspring video.
its hard to see what MTV has become, back during these days you had 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, Beavis and Butthead, Liquid Television, Headbangers Ball all on MTV..long live the 90s!
THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME.. YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! THANKS FOR PUTTING THIS ON. . .. . never knew Bob was FUNNY :) he he he ,.,., Thanks very much, really!
Este programa era increíble..En España lo veía mucha gente vía satélite. Realmente cambió la vida de muchos chicos. Magnet's Coil es una joya...Me gusta más esta versión acústica.
Lou kinda looks like a D&D nerd. I remember he's said he really believes that making music is really like making magic. I feel like he was a nerd who wanted to become and magical wizard, and he's now one of the most powerful magicians alive.
Endrid I think Lou secretly subscribes to Gnosticism, hermetics, alchemy, etc etc. if people actually hear what he is singing about, then they will find truth
I know this comment is 6 years old but it is very awesome and i had to say so. Also, I would add that while Lou is Gandalf, J Mascis is Saruman (in dinosaur middle earth or whatever)
Lou Barlow (as he looked here) looks like someone I used to work with. But Lou Barlow seems more like the cool strong silent type, rather than the guy I knew who was the insanely represssed elephant in the room silent type. thank god for lou barlow :-D
Botulizard Burlington Records is actually a new shop. It actually opened right around when you posted your comment. However, considering you didn't know it was a new store, that was a good guess! I would guess that the shop he went to was "Pure Pop", which I believe was there back in the late-1970's when Bob went to Burlington to get records. In the Husker Du biography (Not Bob's autobiography), I think it actually specifically says that he went to Pure Pop. That store is actually still open, in the same location it's always been. :)
oddly, lou doesn't look frightened. perhaps b/c it was cameras & not live bhuman beings. but: lou & bob "magnet's coil" is genius, i actually remember this from 17 yrs ago.... and i grew up listening to husker du as well.
OK Clarity time. Husker du,Dinosaur Jr. and then later the pixies are all influencial gods bro. There ain't one negative side to any of these bands and half of the 90's grunge era and indie music owe these mother fuckers some shit bro. End of fucking story dude. Every Chain in the link matters. There is no weakest link.
While that's true bob is playing a 12 string, so there's some extra sparkle coming from his side of things, also did he not say they hadn't rehearsed? going for the least fuck uppery I reckon ;)
Because Lou was a little nervous and awkward? Get over yourself. There was a lot more going on behind the scenes as to why they didn't like each other.
Well I bow to your insider knowledge but I don't see why I need to 'get over myself'. Whatever that means. Not knowing J and Lou as intimately as you do all I have to go on is what I see when I see them play live (as well as this) and I have always found Lou to be rather obnoxious especially with his between songs comments and behaviour.
Well they were both out of their comfort zone for sure, Bob has over the years become far more relaxed in front of cameras. Nonetheless I still maintain Lou comes across then and now as as irritating.
"Magnet's Coil" is one of the best songs ever written. Simple and beautiful.
Was so suprised to see both these names on the same video. 120 minutes had to be the best program in MTV history. Always featured great artists such as these two.
I remember watching this when it aired. I don't remember Lou Barlow looking so young. It makes me feel old.
Bob and Lou are geniuses!
I love how Bob didn't move his mouth once while talking.
LOL!!
120 Minutes changed my life.
in high school 120 Minutes came on a little too late for me to catch on a school night, so i would auto-set our VCR to record it and then watch the next day. this was one of the best eps i ever recorded. aw man, "believe what you're saying" still breaks my effin heart.
Used to record 120 minutes also. Still have the VHS tapes. Some gold in there like Jimmy the Cab Driver hosting.
This is what RUclips is for
Not if the publishers have anything to say about it :/
Two of my favourite ever musicians...and this is the first time I've ever seen this. Wow!
Bob's excitement brings sunshine on the rainiest of days.
Great version of this classic song. man the past was cool
What an epic collaboration...wonderful!!!
"If we seem nervous it's because we're on television"
RUclips gold.
amazing, beautiful! 2 of top indie heroes ever!
The 90s. MTV wasn't completely full of shit back then.
I can`t belive it, two of my absolut favorite musicans together on stage......thanx a 1000 times for posting. Just love it
oooh LOU!!! you had me at .....the first note.....sighhhhhh
LOVE YOU LOU!!! ;) and sebadoh and bob too!!
SebaDü!
This is a gem. Why did MTV get rid of music and sink to the reality crap they do today?
Hi, I'm Bob Mould of Sugar and I'm your guest host for the next 120 Minutes on MTV. And your point is?
120 Minutes! Such great memories.
Bobs playing a 12-string! Bad ass
Thank you, oppositecar. Two of my favorites sharing the stage together. Absolutely beautiful.
its hard to see what MTV has become, back during these days you had 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation, Beavis and Butthead, Liquid Television, Headbangers Ball all on MTV..long live the 90s!
And don't forget some great performances on "MTV Unplugged" (Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, REM, hell, even Tony Bennett did one.)
Great performance. 120 minutes was a great show.
"It's just like we're basically working it out in front of you so you'll have to be tolerant." MAKES ZERO MISTAKES
As awkward as these two are trying to play cohost, they pick up a guitar and are immediately at ease
very thankful. this use to exist only as a memory
1995, listening to a Beaster and BakeSale. Never saw this the first time, but man it makes sense
Awesome beyond words!
This kick ass. The post is muchly appreciated.
Lou rules! and I just seen Bob at Sasquatch, He rules as well!
Oh how I wish MTV would release episodes of 120 minutes online. I would cook that shit up in a spoon and slam it!
OMG Lou looks so different! Crazy.. Love Lou!
THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME.. YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
THANKS FOR PUTTING THIS ON. . .. . never knew Bob was FUNNY :) he he he ,.,.,
Thanks very much, really!
Ooh lovely!
Very awesome, thanks for posting!
OMG! I just shit myself watching this,Lou & Bob WOW! thank you very much for uploading!!! FUCKING AWESOME!
Thanks so much for posting! Hasn't seen this until today. Wow. Lou looks so young!
Bob & Lou & MTV? The past has become a parallel universe.
What cool & dumb times they were. They're like the Simon & Garfunkle of the 90's in this episode.
great combination..always thought Lou Barlow sounded a bit like Grant Hart
Este programa era increíble..En España lo veía mucha gente vía satélite. Realmente cambió la vida de muchos chicos. Magnet's Coil es una joya...Me gusta más esta versión acústica.
I was just watching an old interview of Steven Wright, and found it reminiscent of Bob Mould in this episode.
Ah look MTV used to be about music.
i wish i lived in the 90s and when mtv actually played music
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
coolness...
Wow! That's all I can say.
Lou kinda looks like a D&D nerd. I remember he's said he really believes that making music is really like making magic. I feel like he was a nerd who wanted to become and magical wizard, and he's now one of the most powerful magicians alive.

Andrew Workman j is more like tree beard. They both speak at the same speed
Lou Barlow (as he looked here) looks like someone I used to work with. But Lou Barlow seems more like the cool strong silent type, rather than the guy I knew who was the insanely represssed elephant in the room silent type. thank god for lou barlow :-D
I've been to the record store that Bob was probably referring to. Burlington Records in Burlington Vt. It's a great store.
Botulizard Burlington Records is actually a new shop. It actually opened right around when you posted your comment. However, considering you didn't know it was a new store, that was a good guess! 120 minutes was cool.
Nah that's just a young Louis Theroux this 'Lou Barlow' is just a pseudonym.
bob looks so uncomfortable when lou talks about husker du
I wanna get me one those "family ties" t-shirts.
Bob mould (leia-se Husker Du) e Lou Barlow juntos e acústico...
Oh man Lou looks like a nerd. Haha fantastic.
it was on from 12 to 2 am
"120 minutes"
starts at 2:42
oddly, lou doesn't look frightened. perhaps b/c it was cameras & not live bhuman beings. but: lou & bob "magnet's coil" is genius, i actually remember this from 17 yrs ago.... and i grew up listening to husker du as well.
Burlington VT. Home of Ben & Jerrys ice cream, and a little group called Phish.
Phish sucks
These songs are actually pretty cool. Theyre both so awkward on camera it's cringe-worthy, but they make the jams work. 2 great musicians they are.
I think it's the shyness and awkwardness that makes it work so well.
3:18 : "if you turn back just to trip me up" ??? This is mainstream TV I guess he wasn't allowed to say "fuck me up".
Holy fuck that intro
I came
The set looks like it’s the cafe off friends.
cold beverages by g.love is a kick-ass song!
'member?
Lou seems a bit star strucked
He is "Sebadoh".
bob sang on wasting lights
lou had a pretty sultry voice
go to college, but umm....
Current "Sebadoh" guitarist?
cmon i had the tape bw .vx helmet
except the two songs here completely contradict your point
Magnets coil could almost been a Hueskers Song, many parts seem similar
hahaha lou looks like harry potter.
Mtv was a little bit rock at this time!
This is hilarious...
Completely different minds at work. You're doing a complete disservice to both musicians by comparing them in that way.
Bob sounds stoned. Wait, so does Lou.
more like bob mould and harry potter
Each one could play his part alone as well. I don´t know why they play with two guitars, when both play almost the same rythm chords.
TheAmilcar111 so you'd wait for me to respond
While that's true bob is playing a 12 string, so there's some extra sparkle coming from his side of things, also did he not say they hadn't rehearsed? going for the least fuck uppery I reckon ;)
boring chit chat
nervös dü!
Such an awkward couple
Keep to your day jobs boys :)
BEN & Jerry’s not a good company, garbage highly processed food. Real ice cream is cane sugae, milk, cream, eggs plus flavor. Not hfcs.
One can see why Mascis didn't like Lou much back then.
Because Lou was a little nervous and awkward? Get over yourself. There was a lot more going on behind the scenes as to why they didn't like each other.

I mean to be fair he's meeting one of his idols that usually makes people pretty nervous
ive seen him live many times, his between song banter is embarrassing at best
eh, its not aged well
lame
Michael Ohare so's your face
