  • A behind the scenes look into how to tune your snare drum like DW Drums does before they leave the factory!
As I mentioned, this is part of my larger DW Drums Factory Tour video from earlier this year: • DW DRUMS FACTORY TOUR ...
When I visited the DW Drums Factory after NAMM 2020 this year, I got to see how they make their drums from start to finish and was shocked to see how detailed they were even with the drum tuning! I learned their two-handed method, tuning the snare batter, the snare-side head and how to set the snare beads just right.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing...
Right before he tightened up the wires and called it done, it had a nice breathy tone... then he choked it to death. Somehow it still sounded good with the kit. Those toms were BUTTER
Mighty nice chops you have there by the way!

JF, very nice informative Video. I've come to learn - at my age of 71 - that Tuning is an Art. This video makes it look so easy. I have such a problem tuning drums. This makes it look easier, something I will try. Of course there are variables. Metal vs wood snars, which Batter heads, etc. I will tell you that I have stumbled upon an interesting Hack. A few weeks ago, I replaced the Batter head on my DW Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 snare. I used the same one that came on the drum (purchased Used) from the Previous owner- HD Dry. I cwas unable to achieve the "sound" I desired no matter how I tuned and Re-tuned it. In frustration one day, I put the DW snare on top of my 16 Inch Floor Tom to get it out of the way. Instead I played my PDP Maple Snare 14 X 5.5 (also with a HD Dry Head). During my playing, I hit the DW snare sitting on top of my Tom - BINGO ! That was the sound I was seeking. Unblemished with Moongels, etc., it sounded like a Ludwig Supraphonic , John Bonham sounding snare. No mics, no EQuing. Take the DW off the Tom, it wanot even close to the same sound. I blogged this on a number of drum Forums. Responses from posters were varied , but One guy said that I was playing 2 Drums in this manner; another poster said that I have Invented a New Snare Stand!. Maybe I did ! I sent an email to DW looking for their explanation. They responded by saying that this phenom was very interesting and that I should look into their SNOM drum to compare. For more info on a similar "hack" - watch rDavidr You Tube video about "weird" Drum Hacks. David actually attaches a snare to the bottom of a Floor Tom by using the Hoop Lugs and plays the Tom attached to the Snare . That sounded like Crap. Whatta you Think!

Most drummers can’t HEAR the tone nor whether or not it perfectly matches the next lug.

That was me! The tune bot helped a lot. I started to know the difference between high and low pitch in reference to the digital reading.

why not just use a drum dial?

I don’t think I know a single person who uses a drum dial

@@JonFosterDrummer They're great to get you in the ballpark. Let's say you've been playing for a while and you know what you like, you can get a drum dial and be like "Ok turns out I really like the sound of a snare with a Hazy 300 Snare-side head at 80, and a Reverse Dot top at around 85, or whatever the numbers happen to be. So once you get your new heads or are playing a house kit or whatever, or your drums have been cooking in the sun all day and the skins are getting looser, it can get you 90% of the way there, quickly. That's how I use a drum dial, but I don't use it to fine-tune lug-to-lug, that's what your ears are for.

I HIGHLY doubt a drum dial would give better results than this drum tech engineer wizard of a man is doing🤔 ive tried him and john Good's tutorials and the snap crackle and pop is musical🥵

@@musikman337 He's ok. His job is to go fast, and most drummers aren't that exacting. Close is good enough.
