I have been living in Canada for several years and I find that the spoken English used by the natives are different from the written English that we find in books and News papers. They use a lot of simple phrases and simple words while newspapers use words which are connected to journalism. Better read novels that have a lot of conversations or watch youtube vedios listening to conversations. Watching English movies without using subtitles can help too.
