Terrible things happen in this world, but it's important to know that the same child is often the subject of multiple missing child reports, that most children reported missing are found almost immediately, and that reports of children going missing are most often due to children going exploring on their own, staying with friends, buses being delayed, confusion about scheduling or, yes, disagreements between family members, than any abduction. There's also the question of who constitutes a “child”-a seventeen year old trying to exert their own autonomy is not the same thing as a five year old falling down a well, and neither of those is an abduction no matter how the initial report may be phrased. The BBC's data analysis podcast/radio show More or Less (among many other reputable sources) has explored this carefully and is very informative. The problem is real, but the _scale_ of the problem is hugely exaggerated either by people who either aren't practised at reading statistical reports, or are actively trying to benefit from sensationalism. Panic and despair are not the best responses, understanding the meanings of these figures needs to come first. Reports of missing children are not the same as individual children going missing, by a large factor. Children going missing are not the same as children being abducted, by a large factor. Children being abducted are not the same as children being abducted by strangers for nefarious ends, by a large factor. That last category is truly terrible, but truly rare.

The real figures have to be orders of magnitude less than that, otherwise there would be plenty of evidence from communities noticing, but also from satellite images, power consumption, climate effects-you can't just hide vast cities. I'm not saying terrible things don't happen to kids far too often. Sadly, though, these things are more likely to be done by their legitimate carers, in their own homes. _Those_ figures probably could rise to several percent of the population, and that's the bigger concern. Or consider car accidents, something that for some reason we consider just to be a normal part of life. True abduction, like plane crashes, is terrible, and shocking, and _relative to all the other bad things that might happen to a person,_ rare. I know that doesn't sound like a message of hope, but being a decent and respectful person yourself, using public transport, and not owning a gun are honestly more practical and more effective measures to protect kids than focussing on this issue as a crisis. The only thing that would significantly reduce the number of missing persons _reports_ would be to discourage people from calling 911, and that's obviously completely the wrong thing to do.

Please, think about what that claim would mean before you panic. You can tell for yourself the number cannot mean what it first seems to mean. (People sometimes wonder why Google got a reputation for asking interview questions like “how many bananas can you fit in an airplane” or “how many swimming pools do you think there are in San Diego”. This is why. The habit of thinking carefully about large numbers is really important sometimes.) I know your heart is in the right place, but the biggest threats are commonplace things like cars and guns, drugs and drowning, fire and disease, domestic abuse and poverty. You can Google this, too. And several of these are within our direct power to mitigate, unlike the things we have the FBI for.

In fact you use your own car and gas to go to tournaments and award ceremonies, etc., and purchase meals, which is not covered by the board of education . I also started a special teachers club for at risk students to watch over them and support them, especially being their voice against some teachers that were a little too shall we say uppity. Meaning they cared way too much about curriculum over student success. My heart was broken many times seeing teenagers in terrible situations. This for example, included, addictions, poverty, foster homes, single parent, developmentally, challenged, bullied, no-one to trust, , suicidal,… We helped out a lot where we could feeding them, helping with jobs, bus fare, supplying them with birthday and Christmas gifts-on the quiet; making sure they stayed in the school to graduate, etc. I connected with a school board social worker who put in many hours with me and again we covered meal costs for homeless students and found them shelters to live safely in. We kept to ourselves, not even the principal who could care less, knew about the help we were giving the community. You are doing the right thing. I still think of and miss my students. They were awesome. I was also fortunate enough to work with a few amazing teachers who taught me so much more about helping students get through life than they were concerned about just the curriculum, thank goodness. We need more people like yourself that have the concern and an Internet voice to speak out about this Thank you and wishing you much success in the new year.
