    Why isn't this type of product super famous yet??? It's a rather simple idea but at the same time it's incredibly amazing

    • @Etherdave
      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      If by 'famous' you mean 'popular', this particular model is fairly expensive. The kits are aggressively marketed on a variety of platforms each Christmas, including Amazon. It might once have been designed with a motorized turntable, but not any more; it uses a hand-cranked generator to both turn the record, as well as transduce and amplify the sound. So, yes, quite simple. Is it amazing? In addition to this thing, I own a 106-year old Victrola which I keep in playable condition. Compared to the Victrola, which plays 10-inch shellac phonograph discs, the sound quality of the ROKR leaves much to be desired. Also, I might add that the plywood in this kit is not terribly good quality, and is prone to warping. Unless you motorize your model your sound quality will never be as good as in this demonstration. But thanks for posting.

    My 12 year old son got this for Christmas , he spent hours putting it together. He is very impressed with it. Asked him what he knows about gramophones , he done some research!

    This is fantastic. I saw a USB slot... does it play other formats? Also, does it only play while cranking the handle? Or does it have a wind-up mechanism that continues to play once fully wound up?

    • @Etherdave
      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      The USB connection only provides electrical power to the amplifier package, thus leaving only the mechanical action of the turntable to the handcrank. Admittedly, it makes quite a difference. 'Wound up'? It doesn't wind up. You must crank the handcrank vigorously (yet smoothly and without bouncing the lightweight plywood design around whilst you crank) to operate the turntable. I doubt the lightweight plywood design could handle the stresses of a spring mechanism, you need a REAL gramophone for that.

    I bought this one and is working on it. I think it's a pity that it can't play 12-inch records and I hope it can play 12-inch records. I guess it won't be difficult to re-design a longer arm and a larger spin space for a 12-inch record.

    • @augustinacabangon9115
      @augustinacabangon9115 2 года назад

      yea would be cool if it can play any record

    • @Etherdave
      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      The distance between the turntable center and the tone arm mechanism falls just short of 6 inches, so no dicerino on the 12-inch disks; I don't know why anyone would try to play a polyvinyl LP on this thing, that's what REAL record players are for. You can, however, play 45s and even 10-inch 78s on this model. Have fun.

      Any software for laser-cutting wood will do, and there are several freeware versions available on the Internet that will do the job. If you are considering buying a 3D printer, if you purchase a model including a laser, you will get the software. I did.

    Wait wouldn’t the needle be to heavy with that wood stuff on top of it

    • @Etherdave
      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      Tone arms are usually made of sterner stuff than cheap Chinese plywood, but it probably rests plenty heavy on the platter. The tone arm is made of hollow steel rod, and the weight (which is non-adjustable) weighs nearly nothing. At speeds of 45 and beyond, however, the arm is still light enough to want to fly to the moon anyways, so be prepared for skips. Enjoy.

      I don't own one, just looking to buy atm. If it truly is a '3 phase motor' as the video says, then all you need to do is swap any two of the wires coming from the motor. If it only has two wires, then it is not 3 phase, and you just need to swap those two wires.

    ? Im confused. A real grammophone doesn't need electricity. For this kind of wood toys, it would be funnier, when you can use it powerless to play shellac records, and not vinyles. Or did they do that, because everyone has just vinyles, instead of shellac records? But it's still a great product. I own the vitascope. I love it!

    • @Etherdave
      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      Real gramophones don't need electricity to transduce and amplify the sound from the record grooves; and whether your discs are shellac or polyvinyl makes no difference, though you really don't want to play polyvinyl records on a real gramophone, as the needle it uses is made of steel. But this thing does need electricity, a pokey 5 volts DC, either generated by the handcrank or provided through the USB connector on the electronics package. But the mechanical action of the turntable is very similar to the real gramophone, though it cannot easily be seen. I suppose some windows into the works of the model would allow this, but the model is flimsy enough as it is.

      @Etherdave 10 месяцев назад

      My model uses a red vinyl rubber band between the drive gears and the governor, and clear polyester bands between the governor and the turntable. The wood gears and other working components require lubricating with the soap-like substance provided in the kit, while the governor's axle should be surrounded by a clear polyester sleeve. Consult your instructions to verify you have assembled and lubricated the parts correctly.
