Jeff, this is a multicultural masterpiece. A little bit of Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and a whole lot of America. And Chris really nailed that Wayne Shorteresque solo. BTW, I settled on 4/4 even though the polyrhythmic syncopation said to me "more complex than that pal!" These guys are really good and the more I listen to this collection of songs the higher I rank this album in their catalog. Thanks again Jeff. Your takes are always informative AND entertaining.
I loved your comment about "Snarky Puppy has this certain sound that is so distinct"... being an obsessive SP fanboy myself, the thing I think that is the most consistent characteristic of the "SP sound" is that there are always multiple layers of pulse/groove - at least 2, usually 3. There will be some melodic layer pulse that is based on quarter-note (or longer) pulse, there can be an intermediate layer (usually bass / guitars / drums) that is maybe the eighth note pulse, and then there is the underlying 16-note pulse from the percussionists. Pretty much every SP tune will manifest this multi-layer pulse/groove characteristic.
As someone pointed out, the piece is all 4/4 (ok, ONE measure, m 8 is 2/4 - you can see that in the score, available from SP online store); but this was written by Marcelo Woloski, one of the percussionists (3rd tune he's done for SP); he is from Argentina, and this is very much a Candomblé rhythm thing; lots of interesting rhythms (the first melody doesn't start on 1, it starts one eighth note later (the whole first phrase is shifted that way, on "ee" and "ah", you know?
Don't know if I sent this before, but you talk about how distinct they are...This clip was from the music clinic Michael and a few members did the night before Ground Up opened. I know he's right: ruclips.net/video/78SljTgIBHs/видео.html
Theory & method aside, I just love when I see a group of musicians who are genuinely having a great time together. ❤
Great point! 👏👏👏

Michaels accents are crazy ;-)
Hahaha exactly my thoughts as well. 👏👏👏🫶

Thanks, Jeff. Another cool tune from Snarky Puppy!

Snarky Puppy maravilla!!! solo de saxo muy "Branford Marsalis" geniales, Thanks
Snarky Reigns at the top
This reminds me of Phillysound, smooth but not boring by any means. They make you float with your foot tapping... ;-)
Not an odd meter; written by a percussionist (Marcello Woloski).
Yep, it´s "straight" 4/4, unbelievable how they syncopate it... just listen to where Michael sets the accents ;-)
Just got done watching an Andrew Rooney vid featuring Larnell Lewis. Love him & Snarky Puppy!
Wow. Incredible performance. So well done!
I'm thinking they could use a few more members! 😂
😂🤣😂
Let’s see if they will take us!
Some Spyro Gyra influences there?
