Great styling. Just gorgeous. Simply dripping with chrome and a hardtop to boot. Very rare. That $ 100,000 effort shows in the minutest of details. Although I would have preferred the original height the other modifications were tasteful, i.e. the dual brake system with front and rear disc brakes.

What a beautiful car! those were my favourite American made car years (mid to late fifties) and even though a lot of this wagon was rebuilt or done with some fantasy in mind, it isn't "overdone"...the basic original was kept, such as engine and transmission, the body was also kept original with some first class craftsmanship into it. I really think this screams out loud good taste. Thanks for showing it to us.

It's hard to imagine ever finding on nicer than this. I like that they rebuilt the motor and trans back to stock specs too. Adding disc brakes was a great idea though. The only way it could have been cooler is if it had come with a 430 Tri-power under the hood.

They did a nice job of restoring the wagon. They are very rare here, I seen a 57 Mercury wagon a couple years ago at the Langley car show. 58's were a lot rarer as there was a recession that year.

  • @Johnnycdrums

    The 383 MEL is just a .040 de-stroked 430 MEL.
The MEL, although heavy with a it's 4.900'' bore spacing, the 383 MEL had .430 bore x .330 stroke, that's bigtime oversquare for a passenger car.
Some guy on a MEL blog said he stock car raced his 383 at 7,000 RPM for years, with very little wear detected later by the rebuilder.

Beaitiful car. Excellent presentation. My aunt had a 57 or 58 Mercury Turnpike cruiser 2dr, It was a similar color as this one. Once she was going to take my sister and myself shopping or something. We were sitting in the car waiting for her and started to play with the electric windows. Guess what? We wore the battery down so the car would not start! she never knew...

Thanks, Interestingly, I started driving when these 58 Merc/ Ford Station Wagons were not desirables ( unless you had Truck farm, or Large Family): I drove a 1959 Dodge V8 Push Button 3 Seater( rear Facing third) from my Grandfather, for two years or more in period 1959-65... my new Driver’s License: good solid large, working car too.....really tough automatic and running gear for small loads.....maybe worse things/ Hobbies to spend 100K on: for 10-20 value car: maybe a 1958 POLICE OR TURNPIKE CRUISER MERCURY WOULD BE EXTRAORDINARY., TOO. GOOD video.

Interesting. I always thought the '58 BUICK wagon was over the top for the time in styling now I can add this Mercury. Obviously you had a few bucks to buy these cars back then. I'm a wagon guy and I love to see wagons saved. Most of us grew us in station wagons. I know we did. '62 Plymouth and '68 Ford all the way until 1978 then Subaru wagon LOL.

      1957/1958 Mercury wagons (2- and 4-door)
were pillarless hardtops. Mercury was the
first manufacturer to make that style. Others
      followed.

    • @falcon664

@@here_we_go_again2571 Actually, the first hardtop station wagon was the 1956 Rambler. It was a 4 door hardtop wagon, they did not make a 2 door version.
