  • Hi! Try to guess it! The Yakuza boss got to a karaoke bar in his Toyota and ordered sushi… In what country it may happen most often? Catch the hints: anime, sakura, Nintendo...
Oh my, how smart you are! Of course, the issue is Japan.
What do we know about Japan? It seems like a big island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean next to Taiwan, Russia, two Koreas, and China. Well, you know, Godzilla ran rampant there every once in a while. Well, it may be not true about Godzilla. And they have something more - the emperor, volcano Fujiyama, and seaweed food.
Actually, it is a whole group of islands. Several big ones: Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, plus a legion of small islands. Really small. But many. About 6-7 thousand! In general, the area of the country is not large, but there’s no shortage in population! So far, over 125 million people are living there! Well, quite tight - like chips feel in a Pringles pack.
Nonetheless, that’s a developed country with quite high living standards. Even though the things with raw materials are pretty tough here… In a word, clever cookies. And they even manage to sell their products to others so that they are among TOP5 world exporters! An exporter is when you pitch some of your products abroad. And an importer is when they sell you products from other countries. And, of course, Japan consumes many imported things. International trade is established at a very high level!

Quite a lot, lacking mostly from the Commodore Perry origin side. I was curious how much of the history would show up. If I thought my kudos were worth anything, I'd give you an extra one or two.
Japanese history has always fascinated me, being so different from almost every other country, and how they went from feudal to modern in about 90 years flat, with that small kerfuffle just before the final lurch.

Dejima (Japanese: 出島, "exit island") or Deshima,[a] in the 17th century also called Tsukishima ( 築島, "built island"), was an artificial island off Nagasaki, Japan that served as a trading post for the Portuguese (1570-1639) and subsequently the Dutch (1641-1854).[1] For 220 years, it was the central conduit for foreign trade and cultural exchange with Japan during the isolationist Edo period (1600-1869), and the only Japanese territory open to Westerners.[2]

The one with Tom Cruise is probably The Last Samurai. Never saw it. Don't know how many of the scenes are from that, if any are from Japanese movies.
I'll throw in a movie recommendation: "Departures". One of the few movies which you really should see blind, then watch it again a week later. Do NOT read its plot beforehand. It's about modern day Japan, not a samurai or yakuza movie. Some comedy, some romance, some tearjerking, very very Japanese. I am no expert on Japanese culture; taught myself enough Japanese to travel while stationed there in the Navy, been back twice for one month vacations, never became fluent in the language but learned how to get around as a tourist. The movie seems to me to be an excellent introduction to modern Japanese culture ... says this foreigner. On the other hand, Hollywood gave it an Oscar, and that kind of recommendation can be misleading, so maybe I am as ignorant as most tourists.
