Taiwan has a plethora of martial arts, from grappling arts like sumo, Judo, shuaijiao and indigenous wrestling to Holo and Hakka pugilistic styles and the kung fu brought by waishengren such as sanda, bajiquan, tanglangquan, etc. Taiwan is also known for doing really well in Taekwondo, and is also home to strong kendo as well as the da-qiang (big spear) competitions.
I think it's a bit ironic the choices of martial arts chosen don't seem to reflect the martial culture of Taiwanese. 🤔😬

True the Traditional martial arts have shaped a good foundation of martial arts here in Taiwan, but if you look at the evolution of martial arts here and what's most popular and growing most among Taiwanese it's MMA, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Judo. There are multiple international competitions in each of these disciplines each year, as well as newly formed government sponsored national events in these disciplines.
So as it's important to know what were down of the first martial arts trained here, it's also equally if not more important to recognize what's most popular now and the direction in which martial arts in Taiwan is going in the future.😊
