The coolest thing about this, to me, is that it hearkens back to a time when people were making what I like to call Big Nerd Games. Ambitious in ways few people would ever care about, willing to sacrifice what would now be considered "standard features" to get there (because we've got imaginations, dammit, and they're awesome), and not afraid to probably get _too_ ambitious because a little jank never hurt anyone. The kind of game that inexplicably gets a brand new cult following a decade after it comes out.
This looks so good. I'm glad you guys are eagerly sharing your development progress with us. I love it! One small note, however: please don't overuse the blue filter. It creates an unnatural hue.
Someone will always complain if you try to stylize your game in any way. I like the blue filter, it makes it more cinematic, lifting blue from the shadows makes it more natural while still giving it some style. But of course, I am sure this will change throughout development, and its not the point of this video at all. Thanks for sharing, I love that you guys are trying to utilize procedural generation, keep sharing videos like this and I am sure you'll find your audience!@@OnceLostGames
I'm really looking forward to playing this some day, so please PLEASE don't let anyone rush you. If you take your time with this I have a feeling it could be the next big thing.
Loved the update! While it’s only in pre alpha, The Wayward Realms is really starting to come to life and look like a game that’s going to be truly special Can’t wait for the next update!
One of my favorite quest puzzles ever was from Morrowind in the puzzle canal: "Breathe the waters of his glory and the way is made clear." It was so satisfying figuring this out on my own, and something about it really stuck with me over the years.
Every once in a while, I come back to rewatch these videos and get myself excited to the thought of one day we will be able to play this grand and detailed masterpiece. Keep up the great work. The dev team here is magical.
The comeback of the Kings. Hope you all knock it out of the park when this game comes out, don't rush it because we really need good RPGs in this day and age!
@@The8bitbeard How so? Most of the complaints I've seen say that's it's too Different from their formula with the procedural generation and all. Starfield has so much new stuff for Bethesda; you can build, and fly, your own ship; you can explore a thousand alien worlds; the cities are massive and full of content; and the graphics look great. And most importantly, the main story is super cool and actually interesting. Starfield, to me, is a massive leap forward from Fallout 4.
@@The8bitbeard I skipped Starfield. Starfield will be really good in a few years, once modders fix things and expand the game. But that's the thing, modders shouldn't have to fix any game just to make it complete content wise or to fix it. Bethesda needs to ditch their ancient engine and switch to Unreal 5, Unity or Source Engine 2, one of the three, by doing that they would have mod support and could still keep making modern games, and they need to hire better writer(s) for the main quest. However i don't trust Todd on anything or any AAA company for that matter. Not anymore. Heck, I have been modding Oblivion for a good while now, and the game is really good when heavily modded.
@@deptusmechanikus7362 For the TES series everything went downhill after the release of Skyrim. Skryim is no longer what i would consider a proper RPG, it's too streamlined, too stripped down IMHO, as for the Fallout series, what bothers me there is the horribly written story (main quest) in FO3 it was a wild goose chase to find daddy Liam Neeson, and the game felt like a theme park and it has the stupidest things like Megaton, dumb super mutants, idiotic main villain. FO4 is slightly better than FO3 but not by much. And why can we have full body view in all Bethesda games? Idk, if the main story, the writing sucks, I cant play any Bethesda game, no matter how good the gameplay loop itself may be.
I just ran across this game today, but I've been waiting for someone, anyone to realize the potential that Daggerfall had in a modern engine for 28 years.
The fact that theres a tidal system that you gave specifically considered when placing interactive content blows me away. It really shows the passion and attention to detail in this project.
This game has been sitting at the number one spot on my Steam Wishlist for just over two years now. Seeing it go from concept art to a pre alpha that still looks really good has made me so happy. Can't wait to see more progress!!!
This has to be the most amazing thing I've seen today. The dialogue system is super interesting and the interface is beautiful! And I don't even know what to say regarding the game world, I'm just awestruck! Keep up the great work, guys!
Genuinely at a loss for words - the passion is so obvious in what this team is doing. Not only the level of detail on display, but the obvious *consideration* that went into the dev processes, are truly impressive. Keep up the fantastic work!!
The weather and water look amazing. And that they interact with the gameplay is a great innovation. Nice to see people actually advancing the genre (and also picking up and repairing the pieces from where others *cough* Bethesda *cough* abandoned it)! The game is shaping up well and I look forward to seeing more.
Looks amazing, guys. Please add legs and torso to first person - as the game already looks incredibly immersive I do believe that this feature would be very welcome.
please add a proper food and cooking system in the game. i'd love to travel long distances between villages and cities with resting and camping in between. sometimes those simple moments in an open world rpg make the best moments. Looking forward to this. Keep up the great work.
But if this game has large islands and if the game encourages you to fast travel everywhere, I'm not sure if they will add anything if we decide to walk or fly around. In Morrowind, I fly everywhere. In Skyrim and Oblivion, I walk everywhere and enjoy the random encounters. Not sure that is the system here.
The celestial differences are so interesting! Somehow it never even occurred to me that you could control which moons are in the sky and the paths the stars take. Somehow I always thought it had to be a generic skybox. That opens up so many possibilities
Keyword dialog system! Let's go! I'm happy to see fields of grain that look like they could actually realistically feed a medieval settlement. The sky, sea, and weather effects are some of the best I've seen in any game. I'm imagining a seaside dungeon that's only accessible at low-tide, and if you're caught inside at high-tide you'll be trapped among flooded chambers. Also, manning ships confirmed! Can't wait to go into debt to sail the coasts!
Man I knew you guys were trying to do something innovative with this game, but I didn't think the water would be among those innovative things. The way the waves look when you are under water looks so cool. I don't think I've ever seen a game with water that looks like this. If you guys care this much just simply about the water in this game, I can't even imagine what else you have planned for everything else in the game. It really shows how much the team cares about making something special with this game.
I really liked the idea of learning new keywords through the playthrough. I also want to comment that I wasn't expecting the weather to affect the gameplay, but it is a nice surprise.
Seems we will have to weather storms and floods, but I suspect the journey will be worth it in these wayward realms you are bringing to life. Looks lovely, thank you for the peek into the process.
The water looks really great but godamn the sky is beautiful. Adding in the different planets really gives it character. A lot games dont bother making an interesting skybox but back in pre industrial times the sky was a really pretty thing.
Zelda, Baldur's Gate, and now maybe a new Daggerfall? Gaming has fallen into darkness as of late, but oh boy it just makes the diamonds shine that much brighter. Hope I get to play this, as my years are numbered, but I look forward to following the development either way!
super excited seeing this. i'm a relatively recent fan of arena+df - i wasn't alive when they came out! - and think their approach to roleplaying is still very unique, and quite relevant, even in a year like 2023. daggerfall is still the only RPG to get me to bust out pen and paper and start journaling "as" my character. so seeing you guys get to explore those concepts again, and outside the bounds of a 486, is really exciting
Cannot describe how mixed I am about this game. While concept sounds insanely awesome, the vibes the devlogs and Socials give off are strong Chronicles of Elyria vibes.
You can always wait around until release and see how things have turned out. All we can say is that we are doing our absolute best to make this game a reality, having already worked on a volunteer basis for the last several years to make sure we were on strong footing prior to going to Kickstarter.
@OnceLostGames I usually buy two games a year, there's a massive open world RPG from the OGs of Bethesda RPG's making a game in my favorite genre for AA price point. I'll take my chances 😅 Just let you know you got people hooked lol
Absolutely fantastic. Love the scale of things. I would love to find a quiet place in the middle of nowhere and camp. Also traveling far distances from villages/cities for my trading merchant roleplay. Keep up the great work.
Wow. Thank you for sharing this and for allowing different people on the team to share some details. Dialogue system looks good and that water just looks *incredible*. Also, just noticed it is up on Steam to be wishlisted 😍. I will patiently wait but this looks like a great start. Good luck and godspeed to the team!
I’m so excited !!! I had some worries over the past few years that this game might never come so I’m VERY happy to see progress still being made- and it looks great!!
You should create a living background of the vista on the dock (around 4:17 or so) that just changes over time at random. Sunny skies, storm and waves ect. I would pay money for that.
I am loving what I am seeing. I still play Daggerfall to this day. Please take as much time as you need for this project. We can wait and as a true RPG fan, I would love to be able to play this for decades as well. Good work all!
looks great so far, look forward to trying the sailing and getting caught in a storm. only a little worried that ill just spend alot of my time with a bearing in mind looking at that compass and not taking in the scenes though, not making it an item rather than it being stuck hanging permanently over your forehead?
With a procedural quest/dialog system, once you add a procedural Island generation to this, you could have an RPG that constantly writes itself as you move out into the world. The ultimate never ending game. No grind, just moving through the world experiencing it.
Well we do plan a set world, populated through procedural generation (cities, people, flora, fauna, etc.). We want those water cooler moments of sharing a particular dungeon or location you came across with your friends and your friends being able to go there too and experience it as well, though there would be some differences from game to game.
Oh, this looks _lovely_ . Perfectly scratches that vast exploration itch I've been trying to deal with since I tried out Arena and Daggerfall, so I'll be rooting for you!
I know I haven't been on the discord server in a while but already you have exceeded the visual look expectation I have. I love the work everyone on the team have done. Just know you are making my dream come true. So excited!
Looking great! The keyword system is definitely appreciated, as are the ways the world (and other worlds) interact. If you actually get the seasons right, I think it will be the first time I've seen it properly done in a game. A bold choice, but one that games desperately need. If I'm putting hundreds of hours into a game over many years, seeing the world change over time is big for immersion. So far it seems like you're on the right track. Been following for a while, glad to see some actual in-engine gameplay on these new devlogs.
It looks so good already, I'd love to just mess around even with this pre-alpha build and watch the unfinished jank hit my computer for enjoyment. Keep up the great work OnceLost, and take your time, you've got a good shot to REALLY shine with this project right now.
Exciting stuff! Living world with non-routine quests is exactly what I've been hoping for. Quests in Daggerfall turned into a rut after a while. UI is clearly placeholder, but I can't wait to see how that looks later. Keep going. If I could back you guys, I would do it in a heartbeat.
having a seasonal weather and world space is something that so many have dreamed of it will be incredible to see the changes happening as you play. also, that weather and water are impressive. really hope this comes out in the next serval years.

Really small question: will there be options for head bobbing? Personally I'm a huge fan of it and and I find it more immersive, but I know that there are people who don't like it.
This is already looking spectacular, I'm already really excited for this. I am really happy with the direction the game is going so far and how it seems to be incorporating elements from Daggerfall into a modern system.
I love that you can still feel Daggerfall's DNA all over this. You guys are outdoing yourselves.

So gorgeous, a handful of fantasy with a realistic feel. Amazing :)
