The thing I love about 'old' 90's/2000's tech like this is that so much of it has focus on the simple joys/quality of life improvements that are solely *fun* rather than in pursuit of further profit after the product has been purchased. Modern smartphones are engineered to addict you, and that isn't the case with these. Also, holy shit! TAIKO?!

@@ninimad Yup. The Samsung Wave I had back in 2010 also has that feature. I'd hold the volume down button for 10 seconds and it would ring. I can also record an audio that will act as the caller speaking on the other end.

I’ve always known my great desire for a Japanese flip phone!
Honestly sometimes, I feel like I wouldn't complain if we had been stuck in the y2k era because I literally MISS those days 😭 they were just so memorable and wholesome overall, I have so many photos in a little plastic folder from 2009 of me and my friends as well as family just living in the moment
I actually own one of these. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do with it if you live outside of Japan. Most countries don’t use the same GSM bands which makes it really difficult to get any plan for this phone. It might be possible if you live close to Japan, maybe in Russia or China. Also, it’s rather old, so it can’t connect to wifi. It’s really only good for the purikura app, unless you live in Japan or somehow managed to get a plan for this phone outside of it.

the older versions are usially like these, there are a lots of newer models that support wifi and you could use all social medias
It's actually more annoying than that - the phone has the hardware for multiple band GSM and UMTS 3G, and although the documentation claims it takes a "miniUIM" card, it's completely compatible with regular 3GPP SIMs. The problem is that they come from the factory provider locked to NTT it's hard to get them unlocked outside Japan. Even if you do get them unlocked, there are some features that simply don't work outside the DoCoMo network like i-Mode and the GPS.

Japanese flip phones were honestly ahead of nearly all phones in the west during it's peak. Really unfortunate that the technology wasn't made available to the west at the time.
US banned it from coming because they wanted to start the smart phone business.

Also flip phones are really handy with the Japanese keyboard. It’s a lot easier to type in Japanese using a keyboard in comparison to an iPhone

I was and still am a lover of flip phones. My first and second were flip phones in one of my fave colors - CANARY GREEN! - and I loved it. The second one even functioned as a tv so it was my fave. Seriously, one of the few things I envy Japan is their flip phone culture. It has practically died out in most part of the world cuz it's considered outdated but for someone who has small hands and likes the aesthetic of flip phones I WANT FLIP PHONES TO COME BACK SO BAD

@@jules6578 oh, the oldder type samsung phones still has it! you know like the nokia type, they still had those features, the best thing is you can just set a combination or press long buttons to activate it, mine's just click the OK button long enough and the fake call would actually happen, and it's like a normal call but the name is just unknown number. They also still have those SOS calls, where if you activate it, you would go to SOS mode, and your SOS contact list would be messaged to you that you are in SOS situation and need help ASAP, really neat!
Like other commenters said, My Samsung flip phone had it. I had that up into 2016, my senior year. The programmable fake call button helped me get away from annoying guys hitting on me all the time lmao
it's because the target audience of this flip phone is teenage girls, and they'll need that app to protect themselves in japan. if an older man is trying to seduce then in the streets or at a place they are alone, they can pretend to talk to papa or someone they know. it's a very very common problem in japan, please research JK culture if you're interested to knowing more.

My old Samsung (really old, not even a smartphone) had fake call feature. It's really super useful. You could prerecord yourself or someone else talking and when someone is next to you when you get your fake call they will hear a voice speaking from your phone lol. It looked like a real phone call

At a marketing standpoint, flip phones can make a comeback if the demand is there. They're slept on just because it doesn't boast the latest tech, but that can be remedied given how thin and compact a lot of components are getting. I was hyped for the RAZR 2020, but folding screens aren't fully developed and it lost appeal when you see that crease in the middle. That's why the classic keypad format with physical buttons should make a comeback in a major way. One-handed speed texting used to be a thing and I'd love for that to make a comeback.
tl;dr Japanese flip phones are classy af and need to make a comeback.

Once u go flip, it will cling on u for life. Amazing to use. I had one 5 years ago from Softbank. Display got damaged showed just plain white and still it could be functioned through keypad.

I’d love to try out a flip phone some day. Of course there are many benefits of having a iPhone or just a smart phone in general but I find I have a bad relationship with my phone and i need to remember that they are essentially for communication, not hours of addictive and unhealthy internet/social media.

Japan is just really good at making stuff appeal to your senses, and their flip phone is proof of it, from all the sounds when you open/use the phone, the buttons, and aesthetics of course.

Unfortunately, that function only works in Japan. Trying to use that function outside of Japan, at least on my phone, just brings up a black screen with a no signal warning.

i remember way back 2003 when my sister used to worked there in Japan, she has a flip-flop phone by DoCoMo. And yes japan was way ahead in terms of technology because my sister's phone has a fingerprint scanner haha! and seeing those frames feels so nostalgic. 🥰

I really miss the past when all of the technologies are not so high tech and my phone were a flip phone nokia because that way I can spend my time practicing my sketch and hanging outside.... Nowadays we're so attached to our phones and other technology stuffs especially they began to upgrade so fast that we never get to bond with our family and play with our dogs 😞

honestly, my opinion is that it's not the technology's fault, it's more likely *our* fault. Why is that? sure, technologies developments in many fields can be beneficial for us humans, but most of the time we're using it for too much. So next time make sure to do detoxification and have more q times with your dearest family & friends 😆❤️
@@sanforyouu but the technology's designed specifically to be addictive. If company's prioritised actual functionality and longevity, phones would be a lot different to the way they are now. They have so many useless features nowadays, while the battery life, physical strength and ability to work without being connected to wifi keeps going down. What can your phone actually do when it's not connected to the wifi? How many apps can you use without connecting to your email, Samsung account, apple account etc? They've made it so that phone repairs are so complex and expensive that it's cheaper and easier to just buy a new phone. Phone technology isn't prioritising ease for the user, it's just ensuring that the phone burns bright and fast enough for the user to come back and buy another one.
If you watch My Hero Academia, you'll see that Ochako Uraraka has a flip phone the EXACT same colour and EXACT shape and everything.

I mean, her reasoning for being a hero was so that her parents wouldn't have to work so hard, so it's an easy assumption to make. But joking about it because of her having a flip phone makes no sense, considering that students and business people often use flip phones so that they can't get distracted. Joking about it in general is quite mean.
