I've used it with the TC-14E. Voila - 700mm. Very nice for small birds.Since I shoot with a D4 I can shoot in low light and get excellent results. Price is right as well.
I rented this lens and put it on my D500. Took it birding and it was magnificent. Not sure if I’ll buy or just rent when needed. Whichever it’s a fantastic lens. Thanks for the review.
I love your channel, mostly because I work in Yellowstone and get to go to the Tetons a lot too. I like the moose and other shots this lens produces. Just got mine a couple weeks ago. Keep up the good work and continue to showcase our area. Thanks.
+Eugene Kiedrowski Thanks much! I have worked in the Park before, one summer in Canyon and another at Fishing Bridge. IMHO there's no better place in the lower 48 to own a 200-500! :) I look forward to every visit and hope to be back this year.
Just got this lens today and I have a Nikon D7200 and for some reason in auto mode it makes my camera not completely work, but when I make it into manual it works
Glad to find this great channel. Just picked up this lens, and agree with everything you've said. It's fantastic. Just hoping I don't regret it too much while traveling.
Great review, beautiful pictures! Any chance you would have a feel of how this would compare to the 70-200 2.8 with a 2x teleconverter? Not quite apples to apples but the struggle is real if you have/want the 70-200.
It's been a while since your review, but it is still apprecaited in August of '21. I like reviews that are short and to the point. You have covered everything I want to know about the lens. Thank you again. 👍😎📸🤩
Tried this lens with D5, very easy to use and good picture quality too! Agree that hand held is easy compared to 300/2.8. Checking a few more reviews before getting it...
I have a Nikon D90 so this lens is not fully compatible with all Nikon DSLRS only newer cameras so you should check before you buy. I use the Nikon 300 f4 without VR as f4 is superior to 5.6. This lens has to be shot wide open at 5.6 all the time on the D90. WIll pass on it until I acquire a D7100 or D7200. Nice review!
Great idea to do a photo channel. I'm all for picture taking. My biggest lens is the Nikon 70-200mm f-2.8G EG VRII. With the aperture staying a 2.8 makes it real fast and takes nice sharp pictures. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of photography, I look forward in learning and maybe sharing info with you and others that might enjoy a channel like this. Just don't forget about your other channel. Been enjoying you guys for a while now, hate to see one suffer because of to much on your plate.
Thanks. Yes, I have a passion for photography and discussing it seems to come naturally. I just think certain topics (lens and gear reviews, etc.) will make more sense housed in their own separate channel. Hopefully the two channels will support one another. I will try not to neglect the original "mother" channel! Fresh video coming there soon. That 70-200 f2.8 is a nice lens BTW! 👍 I'm going to start this channel by reviewing a lot of the gear I already use, then eventually do some tutorials, etc. It will be fun.
Thanks for the review! I finally bought one and I am satisfied with the results. I use it primarily for plane spotting and the focus speed is quite good for capturing aerobatics. Looks like I'll have to ditch my D3000 soon.
Very good and honest review. Does the sky high price of its big brother 500mm F/4 justified compare to this excellent little brother in terms of image quality and autofocus speed?
If you are a professional earning a living from your images, then maybe the extra stop of light and marginal bokeh/sharpness advantages are worth a few extra thousand dollars. For most people, including demanding enthusiasts, the 200-500 will be plenty satisfying.
Nano coating is not needed on a telephoto, so not a skimp, as it unlikely to pick up flare with a lens hood on it. The photo's do not do it justice in this video, the images from other reviews reveal a pin sharp image. In combination with photoshop or light room it can be brought up to professional spec. Will try and take some examples when this lens gets to the UK dealerships. f5.6 is not in anyway a problem as the ISO of the sensor can be increased without loss of image quality : ) If for example you have been shooting at f8 at 200th sec with an ISO of 100 and the light drops by a 1/2stop then increase the ISO on the camera to ISO 200 or a full stop ISO 400.
I own this lens...for me it’s a love, hate relationship. Love for all of those things you mentioned but hate for its struggle to gain its auto focus. I find myself having to resort to manually focusing and then allowing the lens to snap in. To be fair, I do like to photograph through objects in the four ground but out of all of my lenses this one struggles the most.
Kevin...I just got this lens Wednesday and I agree with you. I have it on a D500 and I am having a trouble getting it to focus keeping up with my two dogs running around the backyard. Can’t imagine trying to shoot birds, which is why I got it. Guess my 70-200 VR2 has me totally spoiled. That lens on my 500 is instant. Gonna play around with it some more and see if I can get a little better. .
I am buying a new Nikon camera, either a D500 or a D750, in about 2 weeks. I MAY be interested in videos. Other than the fact that this lens acts as a 300-750mm lens on a DX body, would you expect the D750 mto be a more simple camera to learn how to use?
Excellent review, what about be using it with the Nikon TC-14E III, will be the AF usable or it will slow down to unacceptable values? I own a D810... cheers!.
Hi, a great review. I currently shoot with the Nikon AF-S 300mm F4 prime lens and thinking about upgrading to this lens mainly due to 500mm focal length. Since your review shows that you have the 300 prime lens, what can you say about the image quality difference between the lens. 300mm f4 prime is a well regarded and superb lens with pro image quality. How is the sharpness, color, contrast and bokeh of the 200-500 in comparison to the 300mm f4 prime specially when shooting on a tripod ? Thank you.
You pose an excellent question with no easy answer. At the moment I am preferring the 200-500 because the extra range, versatility, and VR are most welcome. With that said, the 300 f4 is indeed a superb lens. I have not yet done a detailed test, but I would expect sharpness and bokeh to be superior at 300mm. Of course the 300 feels small and light after toting around the 200-500 beast. Maybe I will do a video about this topic!
Since my body is a non full frame DX and not a FX the 200mm bumps to 250mm and the 500 goes to 750mm will the sharpness be deteriorated and not good for birding?
+Jim Navickas haha I know what you mean. Personally I love this lens. If you look at various reviews, most people agree that it delivers on its promise. It may not be quite as sharp as a prime, but it doesn't cost as much as a car either. 😄
Fantastic video, subscribing. A little less on screen pop-up would have been nice, but wow - a great review in stunning surroundings. So much better than listening to some guy with a weak voice reviewing in front of his dining table. Well done!
+Rob Jackson Thanks much for your comment and the sub. While I can't promise all videos will meet this standard, I will always strive to create useful/helpful content on this channel with quality production values (clear audio, adequate lighting, etc.) - even when seated at my dining room table, haha. Of course whenever possible and appropriate, I'll take the gear out on location for review. I greatly enjoy discussing photography and gear, and hope this channel attracts some like-minded enthusiasts. Cheers
Sir, I am using D750 Body with this lens. But i am facing problem of slow autofocus. i used my friends canon 7D markII with 70-200 mm lens. The autofocus result of canon camera was so much good compare to my combination. I am confused that is it the brand differnece or my Camera problem OR my lens problem OR it may be my camera setting problem. Please guide me according to your experience about this lens.......Thanks in advance
500mm is a good Focal Length when it comes to shooting Moose, Elk, or any animal with pointy things. 5 yrs ago, in Jasper Alberta, Canada, I was watching a bunch of Tourists photographing an Elk from less than 10 ft, when one insisted on getting much closer, those animals don't like their, I guess personable space being invaded, and did a small charge. I bet the tourist lost 5 lbs, all of it brown. I had my camera with the 200-500 on it to catch the scene AF still functions in good light, with the TC-17 II
It is absolutely ridiculous that the tripod foot that comes with the lens does not have the angles ground into it so that you don't need to attach another tripod foot and rely on one 1/4-20 bolt to hold the two together. I bought a 3rd party replacement collar that fixes that problem for mine, but it shouldn't ever have been a problem in the first place.
Got the lens got the D500 now I just need to head your way. Actually your truck plate was Florida so I am in your area. Now to find your Florida spots. LOL
Hey Sean. I shoot a Nikon and have and 18-200 that doesn't have a lock on the lens. When we hike it likes to walk it's way out. I was curious if you knew of any solutions to prevent the lens from walking?
+Brett Neilson Believe it or not, there's a product to stop "zoom creep" called Lens Band. amzn.to/1ZLvtlC Some people use rubber bands to achieve the same goal.
I haven't compared them directly, but I've heard the Nikon is the sharpest of the bunch. Personally, I'll sacrifice 100mm at the long end in exchange for a genuine Nikkor lens (plus constant 5.6 aperture).
+Michael_Viebi No. This would exceed an equivalent f stop of f8 which is the upper limit on all the Nikon bodies I have used. I do use it with a TC-14E. Works fine at the equivalent of f8.
I've heard good things about the Tamron, but personally for long term value I tend to prefer first party lenses (especially with the Nikon system). How well will the Tamron focus with the next generation of Nikon cameras? Nobody knows. Now, I do buy 3rd party lenses from time to time, but here you have a solid first party choice that's reasonably priced.
Easily replaces the 200-400 unless you must have F4. Tack sharp at 5.6 and 500mm, easily besting the 200-400 for reach and detail. And at 1400 dollars, a total home run!
This is a poor mans super telephoto and I find it to be good value for money compared to the super primes which cost as much as a decent used car. I use mine with a 1.4 teleconverter which kicks it up to 700mm and f8. It is quite usable at this level and gives bit more reach but you are getting into the tripod use zone. If you need a longer reach and can't afford a prime ,or can't justify the cost, just get this one and be happy.
mine started making a clunking sound coming from inside and stopped working soon after.never been dropped.the only thing i can think of is the lens motor.i was shooting elk one day with a 7500 and all the shots were out of focus.I was shooting auto.that was it for that lens.I liked the lens and bought another and will try it out on a D500.
Why start a whole new channel... you'll have to spend so much time building up your subscriber base. Why not just take the slight turn on your already established channel ?
Well, this has been my dilemma. Of course, it's tempting to just put everything under one channel. The thing is, we're sort of talking about two different categories. My concern has been that RV campers wouldn't care about the photography content, and the photographers wouldn't care about the camping. Know what I mean? But maybe I'm guilty of over analyzing this one.
+Long Long Honeymoon , a lot of big RUclipsrs have multiple channels with focused content. I'd say you're in good company. Subscribed to both, and why not? It's free!
I try to keep my subscriptions to less than 10, so its possible your going to move yourself out of the park, BUT... I think knowing how you do the videos and what equipment you use are great parts of the RVing videos. Blend it together, and besides, we watch the videos for all that great photography you do, the entertaining interaction between you and Kristy, Smore and the Airstream are just the entertaining parts. Besides, you'll run out of money to get al those nice photography toy I can tell you've convinced Kristy you need the other channel just so you can buy them !! ---Of course--- not being a BIG time You tuber like you, maybe 2 Channels with 40K subscribers and 50 videos a year is better than one with 100 videos.
+Aaron P Thanks much Aaron! Yes, someone once told me it's actually a wise practice to do more than one channel. While it's tempting to do one "catch all" channel, I'm afraid it might end up feeling like an Italian/Mexican/Chinese restaurant. 😜
I finally got a copy yesterday. I was pleased with the handling. It seems it would be much easier to hand hold than my Sigma 150-600 Sport beast. However, I took about ten test shots, and the autofocus went haywire. I thought by now that issue had been resolved, so maybe not or I got an earlier version. Anyway, I sent it back, and have another ordered. Anxious to give it a real workout.
Sadly, mine had the AF bug also, and went to Nikon for servicing. Lately it seems Nikon has trouble getting a new product out the door without a glitch.
I've used it with the TC-14E. Voila - 700mm. Very nice for small birds.Since I shoot with a D4 I can shoot in low light and get excellent results. Price is right as well.

Thanks for the review. I'm looking at renting one for a trip to Yellowstone in the summer and have been checking out reviews from wild life shooters.
Glad to find this great channel. Just picked up this lens, and agree with everything you've said. It's fantastic. Just hoping I don't regret it too much while traveling.

Yes it will work with a D3300. 👍
Not worth it, just as well get a sharper lens . I tried the lens and wasn't satisfied.
+Dave Patheyjohns IMHO if sharpness is what you value most in a lens, you will be best served by a prime. Zoom lenses are always a compromise.
That is not always so. Ever worked with a 200-400mm F/4 VR?
Just look up the price of a 500 f4 and you will appreciate the f5.6 for 1400$.

OH, and just for your info... We watch to see Kristy and Smore.. your just the funny sidekick !! ;-)
+Aaron P Thanks much Aaron! Yes, someone once told me it's actually a wise practice to do more than one channel. While it's tempting to do one "catch all" channel, I'm afraid it might end up feeling like an Italian/Mexican/Chinese restaurant. 😜
Zoom Creep?
+Quinton RIggins I haven't had any problems with zoom creep, though I do tend to use the 200mm lock switch when walking with it.
I bought it and sold it after taking like 100 photos way too slow.
+Kiss A Moose Do you mean you found the lens slow in terms of aperture, or in terms of autofocus speed?
K
"I have ED" lmao
I think you're the only person who got that joke!
Great review... thank you!
Can I use this lens with D5300

Great review. Thank you.
