The third song you listened to is from their first album, during which time Vince Clarke was the primary composer. He left the band to form Yaz and Erasure, and if you like that tinkly synth style, then you should try those bands out. Depeche Mode's style changed drastically as Martin Gore became the primary composer.

  • @KittyKatTat

Depeche songs during the 80s were so rich and layered. So atmospheric and multi-dimensional. The instruments. The vocals. Beyond Exceptional. They tapped into a more soulful and emotional musical landscape than the majority of the synth bands of the 80s produced. There was a decadence to their songs - a dark intelligence to their lyrics - that no other band of their era could touch. I had the amazing fortune of getting to hang out with these guys several times back during their Route 66 days. They were really fun - very nice and down to earth. I have fond memories of attending their Route 66 movie, having a great chat with Dave at the after party, attending their concert at Dodger Stadium and going out clubbing for drinks. It was a kick getting to spend a bit of time with them. So glad you are listening to these songs and giving them the attention and credit they deserve. Love Depeche now and forever. 😍

You nailed the eras! Blasphemous Rumours is from the same album as People Are People, and Shake The Disease was released to help promote their first Singles compilation album released a year after Blasphemous Rumours, in 1985. In Your Room is from the same album as Condemnation and as others have said it was the single version you listened to which is not as dark or heavy as the album version. That video harks back to precious videos with “appearances” by people mimicking characters from those videos.

Those '80s songs have a special place in my heart but In Your Room is just O.M.G. To this day I can listen to it on repeat. The album that it comes from, Songs of Faith and Devotion, is a freakin masterpiece. 😍😍😍

  • @redsmoker37

Thank you for more DM Bryson. Blasphemous Rumours and Shake the Disease are GREAT DM tracks. Just Can't Get Enough is a bit more frivolous and boy-band-y, but it's one of their earliest songs. Vince Clarke wrote this song (who went on to Erasure) and he loved the bouncy disco-y stuff, which is why it's much different from other DM songs. Love your DM reactions!!!
Blasphemous Rumours was at the height of their experimentation with industrial sounds, and it fit in with one of Martin's favorite themes of religion.

-people are people and blasphemous rumours were on the same album so you were dead on
-in your room's video was created by Anton Corbijn as a montage of some of the videos he'd done for the band because he thought Dave would be dead soon (and he was almost right)

The In Your Room video reprises many of Dave’s characters in past videos. It’s an interesting montage depicted by director Anton Corbijn, and coupled with the meaning of the lyrics, many of us wondered at the time if it was an omen of Dave’s impending complete self-destruction. Thankfully he chose healing rather than succeeding in suicide. Otherwise, IYR would have been our final official memory of him, an eerie, desperate retrospective of his career.

"Blasphemous Rumors" and "Shake the Disease" were released only a year apart, "Blasphemous" being a single off their 1984 album "Some Great Reward", and " Shake" coming from their 1985 compilation album, "Catching Up with Depeche Mode". Though Andy Fletcher was a ginger for most of his life, he wore the bleach-blonde look really well in this video. "Just Can't Get Enough" was either their first or second single ever, from 1981's "Speak and Spell" album. Vince Clarke did look different in that video with the longer hair and the scruffy face. Andy was serving a leather bar look with that hat lol. "In Your Room" is one of my favorites, with its great guitar work and beat. Watching that one after three of their early 80s songs really shows the musical progression the band had made going into the mid-90s.

  • @dana.1546
    @dana.1546 Год назад +2

Great selection, great comments and reactions.
    - Blasphemous Rumours was the 3rd and last single from their 4th album Some Great Reward released in 1984 (and even though I am a Christian, I love this song which makes you think about life, religion, the unfairness of sudden deaths etc.) :)
    - Shake The Disease released in 1985 right after Blasphemous Rumours was the 1st single taken from their best-of compilation The Singles 81-85,
    - Just Can't Get Enough released in 1981 is their 3rd single taken from the 1st album Speak And Spell (first and last music video with Vince Clarke who leaves to do bands like Yaz(oo) and Erasure) and
    - In Your Room was released in 1994 (after Condemnation) it was the 4th and final single taken from their rock-grunge album Songs Of Faith And Devotion (last music video with Alan Wilder). The light bulb present in the music video was also on the cover sleeve of the single (always great covers and music videos made by Anton Corbijn for DM).
I love all these songs and music videos but In Your Room's album version is better (more atmospheric, reflective and moody) than the music video's and single version called the Zephyr Mix (which incorporates more rough guitars).

Yes, DM were at their lowest point, the end of the SOFAD project and in the middle of a lengthy tour... Martin had an alcohol-induced seizure around this time during a band meeting, Fletch left the tour in the coming months for treatment of a nervous breakdown, Dave was in the depth of his heroin addiction and not communicating with his bandmates... Alan plotted his escape. Director Anton Corbijn felt sure this was the last of DM, so he felt nostalgic and included many references to their shared past in this video.

    • @luismode-

Anton Corbijn thought Dave was going to die because of his deep addiction to drugs, dave was totally out of control with the heroin and cocaine. Bryson, thank you for taking yet another trip into the world of Depeche Mode, sincerely injecting a splash of multi-colored joy into my dreary dark-grey, windy rainy Friday! Although, to be honest, I love me some cool, drizzly low cloudy grey skies pushing lazily across my daily routine. At any rate, completely love your video, and definitely you have a gift at estimating Depeche Mode's career era! I would have to agree, Depeche Mode's tracks "Shake the Disease" and "In Your Room" is undoubtedly my two favourites regarding these four song selections. I would place *In Your Room* at number one over "Shake the Disease" - there is a special meaning to In Your Room that goes deep and illustrates an experience with another person that is so unique, it is a remarkable length of time which I would never regret. I know that is generic and somehow esoteric, but there it is. Depeche Mode's "Blasphemous Rumours" is an exceptional song, a very talented, creative greatness given an eternal home, and so deserving. Now, as for Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" very cute, propelled Depeche Mode into a mainstream of sorts... errr not one of my favourites, however, when they bring this track out for a surprise live performance at a concert, it does not matter! We all cannot seem to get enough, and it is nostalgic & gloriously pure *fun!*

I remember for one of theyr anniversary celebrations, there was an interview where the reporter was very good, and somewhat leaded them into the route of "looking back,is there anything you regret" and "has it been an easy road for depeche mode,or has there been plenty of obstacles". I especially loved this part of theyr answer where they remembered getting alot of feedback along the way: "you guys should change your sound, maybe if you changed your style of music and imag you would become more popular". (And now look where they are, having a massive fanbase across the world!) Just in general alot of telling them what to play, and what image to have etc. They said "we have always went our own way,and all theese people trying to mock us or work against us for whatever reason, just made a non existent "f you" mentality in us actually come alive and grow even stronger over the years. I know from hearing other bands or solo artists come clean, how dirty and rough the music industry has felt, and how easily it is to just give in to "attractive" offers, and then end up regreting it for the rest of your career. Because other people basically owns you and controls you and your rightful content, making you feel helpless in the process. So i can defintly imagine how buisness men/women in the industry tries to tell the actual musicians what music will make or break them, and that some go to extremes just to profit off of blue eyed, young musicians. I do not support it one bit,and i feel for any musician that has been through that bit. Besides, different taste in music out there. I would rather hear unique music developed by really talented musicians, then to only hear "fabricated music" that are on the charts today. Im not saying i dislike every "fabricated" song out there, some of it is catchy as no tomorrow, and quite enjoyable. But it gets very repetetive quickly,i need some variety. And thats why there are bands like Depeche Mode!
Depeche Mode is all about daring to sound different, daring to look different, daring to play different, basically BE yourself no matter what other people tell you to do,say,be like etc.
But the guys is also just full of positivity and love, whenever you see them live you will see this right away. Crowd interactions that makes Dave bloom into a giant smile, hes also one helluva dancer. I dont know of too many front men or front women of bands that actually possesses sick dance moves, but Dave is certainly one of them. Theyr live sound also matches the studio recordings, wich is a rare quality for bands. 16:28 I expected you to stop the video here and say: Hes my personal Jesus *sigh* 😆Get it? Matches the jesus pose and looks identical to most drawings, sculptures of Jesus. And of course a Depeche Mode song pun most importantly🙃Byyyyye!

Ok Bryson. We have a second single dropped from Momento Mori. I know you don’t take requests by comments. I just couldn’t resist not telling you. Have a great day.🎉

I think I’m one of the few that prefers the single mix of In Your Room. Love both, actually, and like the mix of the two they’ve performed on some tours.
And yes, Bryson, you’re right. Shake the Disease was the band’s next single after Blasphemous Rumours, so they came from the same period.

You just have to react to the whole 101 live álbum. Period. Some of the songs sounds even better than the álbum versión, do it.

Shake the Disease just ticks all the boxes. It's interesting to put Just Can't Get Enough up against In Your Room - they couldn't be more different. The former is about as pop as it gets. The latter is very dark and desperate and gothy. The album version of In Your Room is superior in my opinion. The variety DM gives you though is pretty incredible. Thanks for your reaction!

The original version of "In Your Room" is much better. It starts cold and builds slowly to crescendo with an EPIC ending. Check it out. Especially the live version from their Devotional Tour.

In Your Room is one of my favorite DM songs, but I don't like the version in the video, the album version is far superior. I hope to hear it live on this tour. 3 more weeks! 😆

This is strange version of In Your Room. I love the album version ruclips.net/video/p_6GYfSea5Y/видео.html And this version they use on their concerts. At least I´ve heard and saw this one. This one is darker and more hunting.

I’m sorry, don’t want to offend any religious beliefs, I don’t know what I believe in but there has to be someone/something divine to allow such beauty as well, and music like this.
