I had Charles Harker as an architecture professor at Kent State. He was a mystic and beautifully sentimental about architecture. Great professor and super humble. He never mentioned this house in his studio ever. We only found out as an urban legend through other students.
That makes so much sense that he was a mystic. The whole time I kept thinking, "This guy was on mushrooms when he built this house." But being a mystic explains it. And also maybe a little bit of mushrooms
wow that's an amazing story. i used to live in Taos NM and there are a lot. of homes with this inspiration. I have to look up Charles and learn more about him!
I don't think Charles Harker could ask for a better steward of his visionary property than Dave Klaunch who did an amazing job describing this piece of living art.
Big admiration for Dave who clearly has the same love for this “house” as the man who designed & built it. Was very sad to glimpse the photos of what the former occupants had let happen to this beautiful & exceptional place. What it looks like now is testimony to Dave’s own talent & caring for this structure.👌😊
That house is SO COOL! I love all the intimate spaces, the cocooning feeling of the house in general but specifically in the master bedroom. You could say it’s art-chitecture!
Simply extraordinary. This creation immediately ranks among my favourites on the channel! Kudos to Dave Klaunch for the intelligent and sensitive way he has maintained and preserved the building, making only the subtlest and most inconspicuous of adjustments. This shows great humility and is the true definition of custodianship rather than ownership.
Custodian is the perfect title for him. The embodiment of respect for the time, effort, and dedication of all those craftspeople who poured their time and skills into helping to translate plans into reality. Reminds me very much of the Gaudi architecture in Barcelona. Beautifully organic and otherworldly. I think a Hobbit would be quite at home here…or an Elf 😊 The fact that folks could contemplate tearing it down…Lordy, that doesn’t reflect well on us as a species 😢 Thank you for this. Wonderful.
Dave's renovation was not only considerate but added improvements that kept to the spirit of the original design. In a sense this creation is a living work of art.
@@kirstendirksenI saw a silly waste of money in the first few minutes and soon found out I was wrong. He really has a gem of a home there. I'm in Pinellas county Florida and there was a hurricane proof restaurant right on the beach called The Penquin that had sat vacant for years until the city bought it and tore it down. We now have a great Pavillion and public park there. It had resembled a submarine with porthole windows. After seeing a few of your features, someone could have renovated the old penguin into a really special and unique home. Google the penguin on treasure island, there is a few vintage photos of it. It was built in the early 70's when I was about 7 years. Old. Love your channel!! ❤ Cheers!!

The shooting and editing were phenomenal, and that kept me engaging first 3 to 5 minutes. And i went all till the end. Special thanks to Architect Charles Harker for creating such a wonderful piece of art and showcasing the immense hard work he put into it. It’s so heartwarming that you are able to record this for history and to get first hand information on how Charles built this beautiful house. Absolutely stunning. Thanks 🙏🏾
Wonderful find, Kisten!!! And I'm so pleased that that this masterpiece has found its right and proper steward, what a beautifully done restoration! Just gorgeous, hope he checks these comments!! BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, THEN, and..NOW!! ❤❤❤
You knocked it outta the park with this one, Kirsten! Great work filming this unique structure and capturing the genius elements that make this quirky design work so well. Kinda pisses me off, though, I was in Austin while this was being constructed, running with the alternative building crowd but never heard about this gem. I, too, was a huge Roger Dean fan (still have the coffee table book of his designs) and always wanted to see a real house incorporating all those elements...and here it is! Thanks again, Kirsten, really appreciate you sharing these creative homes, gives me hope for the human race, somehow.
I think the inside of the house is more interesting than the outside. I wouldn't mind an inconspicuous, regular rectangular house (in a city) that looks this wildly organic when you set foot inside. Also: really nice, respectful interaction between the owner and your daughter in the end. He seems to have a way to connect with young people. And she seems to start to take an interest. Perhaps in just a few years she can do the interviews for these videos ;-)
I'm not a big fan of owners explaining their homes, they tend to bore me, but I must say that this man is really very entertaining to listen to, he's really nice and interesting.
I dunno why, but homes that aren't just boring cubes and straight lines are _so_ immensely appealing to me. I just look at this and think "I want to live there - it looks so much more natural". He says it doesn't feel like a cave, but I think it actually does. Well, either a small-ish cave system or maybe a combo of that and what the inside of a house carved inside a living tree would look and feel like. I love all the different levels and the fact that you get such unique eye lines into other spaces whilst still somehow managing to make each area feel cozy and private. I wish we hadn't gone down the route of every house being identical and forcing compliance via all these restrictive rules and regulations. Or if they are to be identical, make them more unusual looking and interesting, not just boring squares all the time.
I very much agree with what you were saying. It is such a unique and extraordinary dwelling. The lines and curves and spires and spirals all comes to gather to make a true fantasy. I absolutely love it, and I like you would love to live there. It Calls to me. I can’t stand today’s homes with all their straight lines and boring structure. So ugly.

Mesmerising, thank you for this! He has so much to say about every detail that it seems like the house embodies a well thought through philosophy of good living. Theory in the flesh so to speak. It also reminds me of some ancient whitewashed houses on a greek island (without cars). Built on a steep hillside they were extended from generation to generation, another room added here and there, often with small irregular steps leading from room to room. Those houses seem alive, as if they naturally evolved from the hillside. One just has to fall in love with them. And they seem to have not just character, but a soul (more so, than the stately captains houses, built by architects from Athens). You should try to capture a few houses there, and their owners. :)
I was thinking the same thing - I had the opportunity to visit Mykonos in Greece last yr and we spent a week in a house that reminded me so much of this structure .
Beautiful Architecture ❤ I loved watching it every second of it . Noone, can imagine how beautiful it is from inside just like a fairytale. Thanks for this video.❤

Beautiful Architecture ❤
I loved watching it every second of it . Noone, can imagine how beautiful it is from inside just like a fairytale.
Thanks for this video.❤
Stunning, unbelievable and beautiful. Espescially all the curved wood inside. This is a house you would feel well inn.
Maybe we’ll start to see more curved buildings with 3D printing
I loved the comment about the emotional impact that the housing design deposits into individuals inhabiting the space.
Organic minimalism is my thing. Please do more of these.
My goodness… what a BEAUTIFUL Space!! I would totally stay here!! Just the curved stairs and gorgeous hand rails! That fireplace! This just makes me think of childhood dreamscapes. I am not a fan of square houses. The floor is fabulous!
This is an incredible work of art! Thanks so much for sharing!
In the belly of the whales. That was my first feeling and then it sort of grew on me.
