  • Who is the Austrian Jurgen Klopp? Southampton’s new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s tactics explained. The former RB Leipzig trainer is an advocate of counter-pressing football similar to Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing. Hasenhuttl’s style as manager of Die Roten Bullen was more similar to Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund side than his Liverpool side, so will be a very exciting addition to the Premier League.

Hailing from Graz in the Austrian Alps, Hasenhuttl began his football journey playing as a centre forward in the Austrian Bundesliga and was capped at international level, scoring 3 goals in just 8 appearances. He retired from professional football in 2004. The man dubbed the “Alpine Klopp” began his managerial career in the German third tier with Unterhaching in 2007, then moved to Aalen in 2011. Hasenhuttl took over the team one place above the relegation zone. After keeping Aalen in the third tier and rebuilding his side, he gained promotion to the Bundesliga 2 in his first full season in charge. His next challenge was with Bavarian side Ingolstadt, he again turned a relegation threatened club into a Champions in a season, winning the Bundesliga 2. with Ingolstadt in his 2nd season at the club. Hasenhuttl had finally made it to the Bundesliga. He finished 11th in his first season at the pinnacle of German football, but opted against renewing his contract and took charge of newly promoted RB Leipzig.
► CHECK OUT MY PATREON PAGE: bit.ly/SDPatreon
In the club’s first season in the top tier, Hasenhuttle led Leipzig to 2nd in the Bundesliga, behind only Bayern Munich. Hasenhuttl failed to replicate the same form the following year, finishing 6th. He entered contract negotiations with the Red Bull back organisation for a long-term deal, Die Bullen couldn’t commit long-term, so Hasenhuttl left the club after leading RB Leipzig to highest finish ever.
Mark Hughes was sacked following Southampton losing a 2-0 lead at St. Mary’s against Jose Mourinho’s out-of-form Manchester United. Southampton have had a wretched few seasons under the control of Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino & Mark Hughes. With the latter saving them from Relegation last season, but failing to improve the side over the offseason and was sacked leaving them in the relegation zone battling the drop. Southampton famous for recruiting progressive managers to the Premier League such as Mauricio Pochettino have another diamond in Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Alpine Klopp mainly implemented a flexible 4-4-2 that transitioned to a 4-2-2-2 at RB Leipzig. In possession, his Leipzig side used direct balls to the channels to gain possession high or initiate counter-pressing or alternatively build with a back three before firing direct passes into the attacking midfielders or strikers. The shape would evolve with the ball as the strikers would move wide, the wide players would move inside to become playmakers, the full backs would add width in the final third. A modern attacking scheme. Without the ball, Hasenhuttl instructs his team to press high in a compact, aggressive shape with a high line. Using a combination of man and lane orientated pressing on long balls as well as pressing traps.
At Southampton, it is expected that Hasenhuttl to employ the fast paced, attacking 4-4-2. Emile Forsberg and Timo Werner were his key men. Forsberg started on the left wing but was frequently found in attacking midfield where the Swede could use his fine technique to create at number 10. Werner was Hasenhuttl’s hitman scoring 34 Bundesliga goals under the Austrian coach. If Ralph is set to impose his attacking style on the South Coast club, he could look to Danny Ings to play Werner’s role and James Ward-Prowse to imitate Forsberg coming in from the left wing and utilising his ability from set pieces.
Southampton’s squad has been pulled apart by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool over the last few seasons with Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk moving north. They have failed to replace their stars. Hasenhuttl could enter the market and sign wonderkid Hannes Wolf who has been linked to the club in recent weeks. The RB Salzburg attacking midfielder has been likened to Premier League star Christian Eriksen and could provide much needed creativity into Southampton’s midfield.
Do you think Ralph Hasenhuttl will keep Southampton in the Premier League? Who will get relegated? Get in the comments below!!!

@RKMP 9, I agree that's been Saints' biggest fault of late, but I disagree with the Puel part. Puel had Van Dijk, who was incredible for us, and still played defensively. Like trying to see out a 0-0 against Hapoel in the Europa League and inevitably conceding, causing us to go out. Puel would also do bizarre substitutions, like changing a striker for another striker when losing a match late on, rather than going all out to try and equalise.

Very well explained. As a Southampton fan. What ever happens from now on in, this season is going to be interesting. Tactically and seeing how players adapt to a new system. The problem we had with Hughes was that from saving us, he did not set about trying to reorganise the squad. He brought in Armstrong which was a good decision. But apart from that he was always talking about change to come, but the saints fans just got too impatient. Also the press try to make out we are a selling club, we was once. But have not sold any player of note for 18 months to 2 years now. This is where Hasenhuttl is going to be a breath of fresh air. He will identify players to a set system, this means that players will have to step up. Lastly our problem this season is that we score early but concede to late. Whatever happens Its a decision done for the right reasons, looking very much forward to what the rest of the season brings.

Completely agree. JWP doesn’t offer much creativity at all. I watched Armstrong live against Spurs and he was by far our most creative threat. Obafemi is also a good alternative to Long and one to develop in the long term (he’s only 19 after all!).
Also think Southampton should look at strengthening our centre backs-unless Vestergaard gets his act together!
Midfieldwise we’re fine but Redmond needs more support. He can’t initiate all the attacks by himself. I think we should recall Boufal in January and see how he fairs with Ralph before selling him next summer. I’ve been very disappointed by Elyonoussi. Can’t see what he’s brought to squad?

I like to refer to the Red Bull football playing style as "Austrian Blitzkrieg". If you watch games of FC Salzburg (formerly known as Red Bull Salzburg) you may know what I mean. The same accounts to RB Leipzig to a lesser degree and Jurgen Klopps style to an even lesser degree. Austrian Blitzkrieg may be a morally wrong pick of words though ... but I hope you know what I mean. These teams rely on an extremely high work rate of players, astounding physical shape and determination. When these teams are attacking, they mostly overwhelm enemy defences by sheer numbers, force, speed and pace. Still they are tactically variable and also able to play well placed long balls to the strikers, kinda like a modern and improved way of kick and rush.
These teams press the F out of enemy defences, gain the ball and extremely quickly go for a goal attempt, mostly before the enemy team is even able to react somehow in an efficient way.
I wish Hasenhuttel the very best and hope that the implementation of his playing style will be successful in order to keep Southampton in the Premier League.

I personally think ward-prowse hasn't got the pace needed nor the strength for his style. Obafeni is a better shout than Long who is just dreadful but don't mind him as a part time type of player.
We do have a few good youngsters out on loan who would fit in and of course a very good u23 team with some good promising players.

@rkmp 9 yep agree, Blackburn fan I know said that Reed has been amazing for them keeps pressing the opposition on his own and he's by far the best CM in the championship. I hope someone at the club lets Hassenhuttle know how good he could be in his system.

The well of young talent seems to have ran dry over the last couple of seasons. Obafemi and Valery look promising though!

The problem with Hasenhuttl's tactics is that it doesn't create many chances. RB Leipzig though, unlike Southampton, have very good passers of the ball like Forsberg and Kampl, and then have the wildcards of Bruma and Augustin to bring on from the bench to bail them out, none of which Southampton have anything similar to.
