I think that this series would make a lot more sense if the budget parts were indeed reliable. Budget upgrades doesn’t mean throwing garbage parts on a bike. that way you will show people that you can still get good parts and it’s not necessary to break the bank in order to have a good bike and have fun. Just my opinion.

      Soo true.
There is no sense in "I throw the best money can buy on a bike and compare it to the cheapest shit I can find."
For example if they just bought SRAM SX or Shimano deore it would be a good comparison.
Also maybe fox 36 vs SR suntour Aion 35. A comparison between super expensive and budget underdogs.
This would educate people to not buy the mainstream brands and help showing people other options.... Everybody should know that there are budget solutions, which can work as well as high end stuff.

The baller setup will not last 10X longer so for the money the cheap setup is more reliable. Not saying I would want the cheap setup as changing out is a bit of a pain. That said spend 400 bucks and you get something that last and is totally fine for must of us.

Budget versus baller is a great idea, but the budget parts should still be an upgrade. They should get a lower end bike that comes with base parts and then build it up with budget improvement parts and then of course your baller parts. I feel like some of the parts that Henry is putting on his bike are worse than the ones he had. Which defeats the purpose of an upgrade.

I second this! It's obvious that really low end parts won't perform nearly as well as the top teir ones. I would prefer seeing SX vs X01, RockShox Gold 35 vs Fox Factory 36, budget Stans vs top of the line Enve wheels. I'm sure the difference wouldn't be as staggering then.

I agree! This series looks pretty interesting as a concept, but it's becoming more retarded everytime. This is not budget, this is retarded. @@bobvelting379 I wouldn't spend my money on anything new that's more than shimano 11 speed with the 51 tooth cassette. I honestly don't _buy_ the 12 speed stuff, the extra cog is just dead weight. Figuratively and literarily. On 11s the chain is thicker, it requires less precision, it's even lighter if you care about that sort of thing. As long as you have a big gear and a sort of small gear, that's all you need, I don't think that even xc racers would miss the extra cog.
I've just checked and full 5 piece 11s group set costs the same $200 they spent but comes with trustworthy cranks and a comparable range to eagle. Some of the parts on Henry's bike was an actual downgrade from what he had so these are not likely changes anyone would make. But I really want to know if the high end components are any better then the lower end in the same brands. I bought a ztto 50t cassette 10speed. Put it on my trek fuel ex5 but still running the raceface crank and original derailleur. Paired it up with a shimano acera shifter and works perfectly fine. The only difference is I splashed money into a decent kmc chain as from my bmx days I learnt chinesium chains snap with a wonderful noise and a very sensual knee to stem connection. I’ve probably got about 300km into the cassette and it’s perfectly fine for some stamped plated steel with questionable tac welds.
Also those cranks iv been testing for 6 months on an old giant Boulder with an ltwoo group set. Works perfectly fine. Pretty sure those cranks are machined 6061 aluminum so the yield strength in the threads of the pedals you wouldn’t trust on a serious trail bike.
I think this video is probably going to have a target audience of either new mountain bikers or the younger teenage generation. I’d go out on a limb and say most teenagers do not have 2500 dollars for a damn group set. Seems to be some hate in the comment section but the video is exactly what the title says. The parts are garbage but I’m happy using garbage parts on any of my bikes and riding it into the ground instead of throwing money into something I’ll never get a positive return on.

After reading several comment about how the budget upgrades should be more of an upgrade it would be a sick idea to do a series on how to properly upgrade your components on a budget like what to upgrade first and stuff. So something similar to this just a less extreme and what a Normal riding should and would do.
But I still love watching this series cause it’s just cool to watch

Acolyte is marketed as a drivetrain for kids bikes. For a few $ more you could have had Advent or Advent X with 11-48 cassettes and proper clutch, rather than Acolytes ratchet system.
I run Advent X on my gravel bike because Microshift also sell brifters for it. 95% of the time I run it with a 42T ring upfront, but when I go bike packing I swap it for a 34 to give me some serious climbing power.

I guess; getting an expensive components is a way of having a feel good factor of yourself and to do some flexing towards your mtb buddies. I've been using the same Shimano Deore 1x10 Speed for about 3 years. I can still outclimb and outpace riders with XTRs, SLXs and SRAM eagles.

Microshift Advent is a great drivetrain and I picked up the groupo, shifter, cassette, derailleur and chain for under $200cdn and slapped it onto my old Stumpy to go 1x and it's been brilliant. It's a clutched derailleur and has a heavier throw than the XT derailleur on my Optic but for the price probably the best groupo money can buy.

Really the sweet spot is somewhere between the two, but still closer to the low end. Cheaper service, good performance, good durability, good value. Shimano deore, and their identical siblings which do not carry the deore name such as bl-mt501 to bl-mt6000 which are the exact same but one is cheaper and uses a slightly different paint color. I don’t own a mtb but I ride gravel. I have a cheap ass hybrid I got from rei for 500 which now sells for 1k with a hodgepodge of upper low end components such as Shimano alivio and Altus. Alivio rear mech with shadow is damn good and dirt cheep. It fits an 11-36 cassette with 9 speeds and a tripped up front with 48-26 range. Pretty sure the range works out to be wider that your run of the mil fancy gravel bike nowadays with 1x. It works damn well. Really my only issue with the bike was cheap hydraulic brakes which had me fearing for my life on a decent due to fade which got upgraded to the deore type, tires to something more gravel specific, and some esi foam grips. The thing has been rock solid for like 4 years now and is totally badass imo. Basically buy a bike for a hood deal with value stuff on it and you upgrade and change the stuff you don’t like or is not performing well. You save a ton of money and end up with a pretty cool and bombproof ride.

I liked the way of thinking when making this series. But sadly it did not turn out the way i thought it would. Instead of trying to actually get a cheap Setup going, its more of a "Lets get the least famous cheap parts for the bike".
There are Shimano Deore Cranksets for less than 50 bucks brand new
There are Schwalbe Magic Mary performance line tires for 15 bucks each (They are heavy as shit)
There are Crankbrothers plastic pedals for ~20-30 bucks
There are Shimano groupless hydraulic brakes for less than 20 bucks a piece.
Seeing the trailer they didnt take any of these. Even Cheaper options, available in actual stores and not on Wish or ali baba with almost the same performance as better groupsets.

  • @NonLegitNation2

I'll be honest with you I've never used a top of the line crankset before so i don't have much to compare too, but I've been using a budget $45.00 IXF crankset (which is what he has, just rebranded) and it's been extremely solid. IXF is the go-to for budget minded people who want to go to a Hollow Tech 1x crankset. Also the MicroShift Acolyte is a good groupset for people on a budget but a AdventX would be better for a little bit more. I was going to go with AdventX but decided to go with a Box 4 groupset and I love it, although the always engaged clutch is a PITA when trying to take my rear wheel off.

PB, if you do this again, please do like 3 or 4 builds: Baller, Good Value for the money, DIY/Wrencher build and Literally Can't Afford Anything Else but Wanna Ride. Cause at this point I just think y'all are hazing the new guy by putting him on Mike Bears... and there is no accounting for the longevity of the parts that are being put on the budget build. Might be ok for a ride or 2; probably can't get any sort of warranty on those items if it does go to crap. Love ya PB, but this series could be so much better and much less irresponsible.

Where else are you going to get a new, unused, clutched, rear deraileur with ball bearing shifter for less than 90 USD? I did splurge a little more on my cranks though and I went with a blackops crank with a 32t chain ring.

Like many people here, I would have rather seen a comparison to SLX or even Deore. I ran an Eagle X01 12 speed drivetrain since 2017. While it works well when it works, the rear derr is flimsy and poorly engineered. The jockey wheel screws pull out and everything gets eaten by the cassette. These derrs are far too expensive to trash on a regular basis. I can't imagine paying big bucks to replace a wireless derr due to a design flaw. The X01 cassette and XD driver body is a thing of beauty but also crazy expensive.
I swapped to a Shimano XT 12 speed drivetrain to get off of $ram upgrade train. Overall it's excellent, the shifting is WAY better than Sram but the cassette is a lot heavier and Shimano microspline freehubs always fail. The multiple upshift and downshifts from the XT shifter is great. I did break a spring inside the shifter and the Shimano warranty process is utterly useless, in my experience.
Shimano has never made a strong freehub, I've broken too many to count since the 7 speed era. I used a Sram hub that was also crap so they're no better. Pair a 12 speed Shimano drivetrain with a strong hub (e.g. DT, Chris King, Tarin Shogun, etc) and you'll have perfect shifting and save thousands of dollars over the long run. OneUp oval rings up front will save some money too. The XT rear derr has been pretty strong so far, has a serviceable and adjustable clutch, and it's about 1/2 the cost of X01 or less. The Shimano 12 sp XT cassette is like a throwback to the 90s with rivets, separate cogs and different sized spacers, but it works great. I'm running an SLX cassette due to lack of parts availability and it shifts as good as XT. I would expect Deore to shift well too. If weight is a big concern, you could buy a Garbaruk cassette instead - still cheaper than an Eagle cassette.

I think the idea is great, I would have prefered to see a comparison between Henry's bike (as it has been so far) and Jason's bike being upgraded with parts that most people would buy, those super expensive bike parts only 0.00001% of people buy them. so for example, for on Herny's bike stays Himalo and Jason's bike upgrades to Rockshox 35 gold and compare the difference, for me that would have been a real (more fair) comparison.

  • @yetti423
    @yetti423 2 года назад

The main take away from running srams 10 speed set up was the derailleur was the weak link. The joint pins on the devices main body were either made of cheese or a smaller diameter and migrated through the metal swiftly, so with sram something like xo will last, i have x1 o my enduro and its really lasted, 3 years and ta few thousand miles all remains tight. the x9 derailleur 6 months if lucky.
the only thing id add is if you smash derailleurs al the time go cheap otherwise that £60 cheap unit will be replaced so many times over distance it will cost at least twice the £170 unit. Thats my experience since 2015 averaging 4800 to 12,000 miles per year. (yes one year 400 a month some nearer 1000 as wasn't sleeping, really really not sleeping so day/night was out there)
    hope this helps

When referring to gearing ratio, you should mention the wheel size.
Eg. Henry thinking back to his old 34-42, there is every chance that was fitted on a 26" bike which is a perfectly reasonable ratio. On a 27.5 or 29 you would want to drop down the front chainring to compensate for the larger wheel with the same derailleur.

I would like to see more effort put into these budget vs baller comparisons. The approach is not realistic and an insult to our intelligence.
Example. I am a budget guy. My last 2 bikes came with bottom end NX and SX sram 11s and 12s. Neither would not stay adjusted cuz they suk. I replaced them with the GX derailleur and left the rest. That was just over $100. Its been solid, and likely performs exactly as the the top dollar set up other than weight.
