  • “Rishi Sunak cannot get out from under the shadow of those two prime ministers without actually actively and decisively repudiating them.”
The Tories are not fighting the Labour Party but the legacy of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, says columnist Trevor Phillips.

The Tories haven't had a lead in the polls since Partygate broke in the news. Bringing him back would only remind voters of that scandal and how they spent months trying to defend him. It's just make the situation ten times worse and provide more fuel for Labour, LDs and Reform

This is far too generous to Sunak. I think you could make a case he's not as bad as Johnson or Truss, but that's a very low bar. Any half-decent leader would have repaired at least some of the damage. Sunak has managed to make things worse if anything.

The way they talk about Boris Johnson 'coming back' really gets on my nerves and shows that they STILL think the rules just shouldn't apply to him. HIS PARLIAMENTARY PASS HAS BEEN REVOKED!
How can he 'come back' when he is literally barred from entering Westminster? When you hear people talking about him 'coming back' what you are hearing is 'yes, he is a liar who committed such atrocious acts of dishonesty that he was forced out of office in disgrace - but it's 'Boris' so we can just ignore the rules and find a way to get around the fact that he's been barred from Westminster - because it's BORIS! the rules don't apply to him!'
It's not just himself that thinks he's special - the media allow him to think that and act accordingly. It's like if a really horrible kid had been expelled from school, but the parents just carried on sending him anyway and the teachers let it happen because they like him a bit and he refuses to go away.
No. 'Boris' CANNOT come back. One more time - HE IS BARRED FROM WESTMINSTER FOR LYING TO THE HOUSE!

As an American whose been following this interesting British election, I feel like he's glossing over a lot of the issues you see with Trump. Policy-wise, surprise surprise both Biden and Trump can work within political realities. But the similarities start and stop with certain common ground policies and their age, both in terms of policy stances and as individuals.
Also, I feel like if Boris did come back, that might drive voters into the arms of the party's rivals even as it brings voters back from Reform. the GOP here has that happen in 2020, 2022, and there are signs its happening again in 2024.

The public has lost confidence in the Tory party because they have failed to deliver on important issues that they promised to fix. They failed because of the leaders they chose, and the majority of the party, did not really believe in the promises they made to the public. After the Brexit referendum, many key Tories did not want to exit the EU, so they delayed and undermined the course of action that should have happened. Therefore 6 years after the referendum, they went back to public, asking for a majority so they could get Brexit done. Boris got his majority but lacked the political courage to do what the public wanted and he shot himself in the foot with his antics. Truss and Sunak were unelected and still didn't have the courage to complete the Brexit plans.
I don't think the public wants Labour but the thought of 5 more years of the incompetence and policital cowardice from the Tories is unsellable!. Reform UK has simply highlighed the divisions in the Tory party. The refusal by some Tories to deliver a proper Brexit is the root of all their current problems.

You're suffering from what is known as a selective memory. It's a condition that is common among people in denial. Boris Johnson's Tories lost the North Shropshire seat they held for 115 years. The Liberal Democrats overturned the Conservative’s 24,000-strong majority in the “True Blue” seat of Tiverton and Honiton. The Labour Party won back Wakefield. All while Johnson the lying clown was PM. These losses are what prompted the Tories to "stab Johnson in the Back." He had gone from being a winner to being a liability.

The stabbing culture in the Tory Party would put south London knife crime to shame. All they had to do was solve problems, Pritti Patel and Suella both had stints as home secretary and did nothing to manage migration, including the boats problem. Something should have been done about the NHS waiting list for serious problems. Sunak apparently works as hard as Thatcher, but he's an awful politician and is unable to politically capitalise on the fruits of his Labour, such as inflation down and maybe the Rwanda scheme will actually work.

'people', 'populous', 'population', electorate'. These are some of the words used in Britain to indicate those who are ruled. In other countries they are called 'the people', but this term is avoided in Britain because 'the people' are not sovereign. That honour belongs to the politicians of Westminster and the Monarchy.
