It's great, but it's not a rarity. It was recorded on Broadcast, a cheap British label, in the late 20s.

i read that caruso had met sirota, and told him he shouldn't go into opera because he didn't want the competition. somewhere i also read that sirota made recordings of opera under the name 'sirotini.' nice try for the morendo on the last note...

More accurately, when Caruso heard his records, he wished him well in his profession and added that he was pleased that he'd decided not to be an opera singer! ;-) This recording was made when Sirota was about 55yo.

While I personally don't like most Italian opera, Sirota's voice is magnificent and that pianissmo is absolutely heavenly - even here. For my opera-only inclined friends, this may be of interest to them. If I had to hear Aida, I'd rather hear/see Sirota (and of course, Caruso) over the other dramatic tenors any day.
