    "Nvidia was faster but AMD had better prices" nothing has changed since then.

    • @McLeonVP
      @McLeonVP 2 года назад +1

      Hmm.. Actually depends
      MSRP prices of rx 6600 and 3060 is the same.
      Retailers and scalpers makes the 3060 expensive.
      But this is not nvidias fault.
      3060 is a better gpu
      330€
      The 6600xt what is the same in performance
      cost 370€ in msrp
      But maybe you could find at the same price of the 3060
      in the high end maybe radeon was cheaper than nvidia.
      But in low range and mid range things never was that simple.

    Still you need to upgrade the cpu to at least a 6th gen i7 or i5 to ensure no bottle necking because older and weak cpus such as a old ass 9th gen or lower i3 can often severely limit modern gpus and even ancient ones so yeah if you want the videos to be as factual as possible it is a necessary requirement to upgrade the cpu

    • @Jaindike
      @Jaindike  2 года назад +3

      100% Agree. But even a 6th gen setup isn't really in my budget. Gonna try getting a 4th gen i7 to put in the current test bench

      Back in 2008 I wish I Purchased a HD4870. I purchased a HD 4850 because I had an extreme deal I could not turn down when I bought my asus hd 4850 reference model for just 130$. To put that into perspective the full retail price was 200$, a common sale price was 170$, which meant the 130$ deal was an extreme deal for a card that was only out for 2.5 months when I purchased it.
      The HD 4850 even at retail was still seen as the better bang for your buck over the HD4870 though, as the HD4870 was 20-25% faster, but 33% more money (200$ vs 300$),
      Boy have things changed.

    Your launch charts only tell a partial story. The HD4870 512mb was pretty much on par with the launch GTX260. However, when it hit the 512mb it tanked and at the time ATI's drivers flatout sucked. They were improving but still had problems. ATI very quickly followed up with a 1GB version and Nvidia immediately increased the shaders on the GTX260 releasing the core 216 version giving it a slight edge. Depending on retailer very quickly after launch both original cards pretty much price matched each other give or take.
    Personally I went with the 4870 and a mate went with the 260. Ended up switching to a second hand 260 after a year when my card died for a second time just outside the warranty period.

    I don't think it's totally useless e-waste. It is actually better than modern graphics card in two scenarios:
    - windows xp machine. Yes, you can get a modern nvidia (up to gtx 960) or AMD (up to r9 290) card for that, but it's not a good idea. Drivers compatibility doesn't ensure compatibility with old games engines, and in most cases, the older the graphics card, the better. These terascale AMDs are a sweetspot between old and powerful, so they are mostly compatible with older windows xp games but also blow away older graphics card in terms of performance.
    - gaming and emulation on a CRT: that card is compatible with emudriver, so you can run custom drivers to output 240p to an old CRT tv or monitor and build and have an arcade-like experience. You can also do that with an r5 240, but this one even has S-video output, which is high quality and can be really convenient. It's also probably the last and most powerful card to have it too.

      I'm doing something similar, except it's my old Athlon II X2 245 and HD 4850 from back in the day, plus an additional 4850 and a SB X-Fi Fatal1ty to make it a bit more interesting.
      I would recommend you look into getting a period Creative sound card such as Audigy 2, or maybe ideally an X-Fi. It shouldn't be expensive, and hardware accelerated 3D audio via EAX is one of the few benefits of running XP, besides nostalgia. A surprising number of big games had support, from Doom 3 to San Andreas and Mass Effect.
