The problem with Ilha Bela is that Brazilians seem to lack any notion of littering in their upbringing and culture. The garbage accumulates each and every year on the island and nothing is being done about it. The last time I was there Ilha Bela had turned into a garbage dump. It was shocking!
There used to be beautiful, hidden beaches and places that you could only reach by hiking. These places/beaches were still quiet and clean. Now there are so many water taxis that anchor very close to the beach that it becomes difficult to get into the water. They bring hordes of tourists, bars (and garbage!) and loud music to these previously quiet and difficult to reach places.
Also, where-ever you stay at the island, there is always a church nearby that has angry preachers shout their sermons through large speakers contaminating the peace for a large area.
My favorite place in Brazil ... I will never go there anymore!
