Zak is not qualified or competent as an obedience trainer. A professional obedience trainer would have this behavior out of inertia in a week or so. The harm Zak does to inexperienced pet owners is letting their dogs off the hook for bad and potentially dangerous behavior and chalking it up to the dog's age, the time of day, the other dogs in the park, the squirrel one state over, or whatever the excuse de jeur is.

I'm a new dog owner and it brought me to your videos, I've been a flyfishing guide for years. I make all my new guests show me what they can do on land first. The fish are just distractions for people. Same reason to start fetch training indoor first. You would be shocked how well people can cast on shore but once there's fish around and the boat is moving, the pressure is up and mistakes happen

Hi Zak, I have a American bulldog an he is a little under 1 and a half years old an there are a few things that are hard to train him: let’s start with tall people, if there are tall people (mostly guys) he barks at them more often, except not in public only when they come to our house, over time he gets used to them but it takes him way longer to stop barking so much at them. 2: walking in the park, since we first got him he has been way better at not barking at other dogs but he still pulls and tries to get close to them however he is not barking, and it is hard to get him to listen and stop pulling. 3: squirrels! This is a BIG problem, if he sees a squirrel in our yard he takes off without even thinking twice and if we are walking him on a leash he will pull us down, luckily some how this has not happened in a public place he just has not seen a squirrel nearby but it will happen sometime and I don’t want him running of and then he will be lose in public. He even runs to the nearest tree and looks up i he hears the word squirrel. 4: playing fetch, he is a really playful dog and he loves chasing a ball or frisbee or stick however once we throw it he does not like to drop it and give it back. Sometimes he doesn’t even come al the way back and just sits there and chews on it 5: At home he likes to play rough with our other dogs, he is not aggressive but he just plays rough and I am worried that he will play rough with a friends dog or something and they will think he is not playing and it could not turn out so good... 6: he knows Sit and stay and lay down ect. But he hardly does them if I don’t have a treat with me. Any advice on these? also tysm if u actually read through this ik I wrote a lot, sorry!

My take is Petflo is something a little more sophisticated than Amazon if money is not an issue. If money is tight, Amazon seems like a very similar, alternative with a longer history and lower price point. 🙂👍

This is exactly how my dog is! I always wanted to do multi-frisbee tricks with him but he will not do any kind of two-ball game. He like "imprints" on his preferred ball. If i put the preferred ball away, then he will play with the second one just because that's the only option left. But he just will not engage with the other toy (even if its the SAME toy). He will appease me by just mouthing it or grabbing it for a second. I can even ask him to go get it and bring it to me (but that that also seems like another behavior /retrieve being layered onto it instead of him actually being fully interested in it). Eager to see how you over come this!

The way I taught/still teach my dog to come is to have a bag with his favourite treats... the sound always makes him come and then I start and end it with the command *come*
At this point most of the time I just have to say come and he comes.. but I always have the bag of treats for when his focus is on something like another dog or he smells something... I also carry normal treats for our regular training or for when he looks me in the eye wanting a treat:P Only had him for 6 months now and he used to be a romanian stray but I found it works great...

I’m getting a puppy tomorrow and have been watching countless hours of Zaks videos and love his training style. We have been thinking about an obedience class but am worried they won’t have the same philosophy as Zak and I wouldn’t want to spend money on something that doesn’t coincide with that philosophy. Does anyone have any advice?

Go to interaction classes, so your pup can have play dates and socialization, but not dog trainer. The one i went to see told me to punish my dog all the time, and my dog was getting worse . Until i started with this series , now shes much better!
