The history of the Cant is interesting: Prior to becoming a mainstay ice miner/hauler of the Pur and Kleen company, it was actually a colony ship that brought settlers out to the belt and made many trips doing so. When the Cant went down, it didn't just mean that there was a lost water shipment, or that a belter ship was destroyed, that was a piece of Belter history and almost a legacy. Many Beltalowda probably had parents or grand parents or great grand parents that were brought to the belt by the Cant. At the time of it's destruction it was a probably a fairly well known almost household name in the Belt. It had served their existence since the beginning. In some ways there's probably a quiet Belter pride in that ship, since it was not some fancy new tech Wellwalla ship. It was a Belter ship. It was old. It was rugged. It was maintained with subpar resources. It was a hard working ship that got the job done. And it was another victim of the Inners and their greed, politicking, and manipulations. The fact that it was taken out by a stealth ship all but immediately convicted Mars in the minds of many Belters. It was also a perfect target for the powers that destroyed it. If it had been a OPA smuggling or pirate ship, well that's the life that ship and it's crew lived. But the Cant was a fully civilian craft, and almost symbolic of the innocent Belter who tries to work hard and just eke out a meager but honest living, only to be brutally crushed under Inner heels.
Good analysis. I hadn't thought the Cant was a big symbol of the Belt like that before. Kinda makes the riots on Ceres and beyond a lot more understandable.
I imagine the flight deck was laid out the way it was because it simply doesn't _need_ to be efficient. Since it's never intended to go into combat, it doesn't require a central plotter or for crew stations to focus on the captain. All he has to do is make decisions about where the ship goes (which he doesn't need to be physically present to give orders for) and handle any crew issues that the first officer can't. Besides, he can still watch the flight crew work from the comfort of his office.
Also initially a colony ship? So this thing was meant to be disposable? So slapped together is probably right as it would be taken apart and used elsewhere. As for the digs about it being unarmed. @@TheCJUN also I just watched an interview with the science consultant of the new Bill and Ted movie, which is excellent sci-fi, on Answers with Joe. I had totally forgotten this would make 2020 a whole lot less sucky
It was originally a colony ship. If that's the case not a lot of room for collonist and way to much room for cargo. Or was the cargo area enclosed at one point?
Something I don’t understand about the ice-haulers is wouldn’t the various colonies/outposts in the Belt be “closed systems” and all water recycled? How much “new water” could they need?
The Cant had no point defense at all? I get that its a civilian ship and likely wouldn't have had the capability to shoot down the incoming missiles, but come on. What about pirates? What about the random asteroid hurtling towards the ship. At least give the ol' girl a manually-operated PDC or two to fend for itself.
Space is big and empty. Stray asteroid hitting a small target like Cant is very unlikely, so arming ice hauler with torpedoes for that would be overkill. I give you the pirates though.
Pirates weren't an issue really. It's a belter ship hauling low value cargo, and the pirates were nearly all belters who for the most part, left their own kind alone and went after richer prey.

Apparently the belt has been overexploited, if you consider that Ceres, now mostly water, is completely mined of its water by the time of the Expanse. Damn inners
There likely is, but with 2-3 centuries of heavy mining for both the belt and Mars' terraforming project the big, easily mined stuff is indicated to be less common, while the rings of saturn are mostly ice.
This video made me realise something thats wrong with the Cant. It's the only ship in the Expanse that has to have artificial gravity due to how it maintained gravity while still performing harvesting operations. Oh and because of how they boarded the Knight. They climbed into the it on a ladder, which would have meant it has to be docked in the bow of the Cant else the decks are orientated incorrectly with the drive systems. That and the ship has no hand rails, nothing is secured down, and the captains quarters have loose soil in them, meaning zero G (which is required for harvesting) would be beyond dangerous and messy.
Not sure about that. In season 2/3 they make a lot of "prax panels" on the Rocinante which are basically small potted plants. They stay in their soil just fine in both 1G and zero G. They only fly out when the Roci starts making high G combat maneuvers. Something the Cant isn't capable of.
@@xJavelin1 those panels are apparently designed for low/zero g, the soil is sealed in. Not sure how they do it, but the are apparently designed for it. The soil on the cant however was lose on the floor, it wouldn't stay on the floor.
@@cgi2002 I'd have to check the books to be sure about that. But...even if you're right wasn't the (show) XO crazy? So planting those plants like that wouldn't make sense anyway? Plus, in the books Holden was the XO of the Cant from the start. So this is a show only issue. And likely a screwup since it does occur in the pilot...
@@xJavelin1 that's the point. They made a massive deal about realism with space travel for most of the show, and yet the very 1st episode has a massive hole. Even disregarding the soil, look at the ship itself. If your planning on zero g, corridors should have handholds/rails for zero g travel. And the knight is still oriented wrong when you see them board it and it launch. It launches from the top of the ship, meaning the decks in the cant would be at 90 degree right angles form it, not vertically below it. Also as i said, all harvesting operations would been to be done with the ship basically stationary/matched velocity to the ice, so no thrust meaning no thrust gravity aboard ship, else the ice would just smash into the cant. I know it's a little thing, but it's still an oversight that bugs me. There are other oversights that can't really be well explained. For example they Martian marines "earth gravity training", just to adapt your body to earth's gravity should take, months if not years in constant 1g thrust, due to them been born with a much weaker bone & muscle structure. So now you need a huge ship (no point training a few dozen at a time) constantly under thurst going back and forward in the solar system for years at a time. Also, the moment you stop the training, they would start to deteriorate rapidly, meaning naval ships should also spend all their time under constant 1g thrust, meaning you need to train your naval crew to live in that too. Earth forces troops however have the opposite problem, any time spent in microgravity would need to be countered with retraining. And in theory they could trian in 3g always if mars can do 1g.
@@cgi2002 There are other issues from the pilot which were also dropped. One of which was the far more accurate (to the books) display of a belter body - being tortured in this case. That was 100% accurate to the books yet was dropped. We should always give a pilot a little slack. If it's picked up they'll get more money and can pay better attention to/fix these issues. If not, it doesn't matter anyway.
Nothing new there, it's a company owned civilian ship, the sci-fi version of today's Oil tanker Ships Old, outdated, almost falling apart AND... money saving for the company xD Who gives a sh*t about employee safety, defensive weaponry (the cargo isn't profitable, NO! xD) or efficient operating design? xD
I really have to disagree that physical buttons are inferior to touchscreen. With non critical stuff touchscreen are good since they save weight and can be configured as any function. As critical functions physical buttons are great since you can push buttons without looking the controller. This is the modern cockpits are done nowdays f-35, airbus glass cockpits, spacex dragon capsule...
Tbh not really, they may have removed some of it but I suspect most was cargo space. Colonists don't need excess comfort for the relatively short trips they'll be taking. With an Epstein drive running at 1g, you can move about the solar system alot faster than you realise. Distance from earth to Saturn is between 1.2 and 1.7 billion km. After 24 hours of acceleration (not counting the distance covered in that time), a ship would, if it stopped accelerating (current speed is 846,720m/s or 846.72km/s), reach Saturn in between 16.4 days and 23.23days, but that's not how it would work. In reality you will be accelerating constantly until the half way point, then flip and slow down. Makes the math a right pain to do, but I can give a rough estimate. Short distance: 8.1 days. Long Distance: 9.65 days. And this is assuming the ship starts at 0ms and ends at 0ms, which it wouldn't, but the math is even worse if I start adding in the relative velocities of Earth and Saturn (my head may explode).
@@cgi2002 1/3 ship crew and ship nasty 1/3 passenger 1/3 cargo 1/2 passenger 1/2 non passenger remove passenger zone now1/3 crew 2/3 cargo . i estimated mane med bay, mane lounge, and passenger ps think T back crew no passenger, bottom front cargo no passenger, top front passenger zone ok

@@omegacommand1 that's the thing, there are actually no g forces involved beyond the ships actual thrust. G forces are imparted by a change of velocity in space. So only accelerating or decelerating generates them. You can travel at 10kmph or 1million kmph and it'd feel the exact same. That's why in the expanse if you want gravity on a ship you need to be using your drive. As for lateral g forces, those are possible but your u likely to experience anything like you would on a planet due to the relative weakness of the maneuvering thrusters. The exception to this rule is however the actual effect of gravity, if you flew too close to a large planetary or solar mass, you would experience gravity from it, and depending on how strong that force is, it could kill you.

Just came here to say remember the cant
Ok, so right before she died horribly, Holden's girlfriend had something urgent to tell him. Am I the only one alarmed that he grieved so little for his dead pregnant girlfriend?
To be fair he didn't have much time to actually grieve, people were constantly trying to kill *him* for the next several seasons.
You should read the expanse books, they’re a lot further along than the show and will give you more of that expanse itch and they’re really good
I would argue that the Anubis kicked off everything, but that would be semantics.
REMEMBER THE CANT!
...Also the planet broke before the guard did. Hail the Emprah.
Touchscreens would be an alright comprise. Think I'd rather use 'em than holographic ctrls.....but think I still wouldn't mind some good 'ol fashioned buttons as a backup 😁. To bad she didn't have any pdc's.
I CANT anymore
Reminds me of the merchant marine ships that needed escort... vital but vulnerable... if water is key then prob should be escorting it via pirates etc let alone a covert war... imagine the cold war if the largest navy on earth said naaaaah its fine we'll just stay in port rather than patrol vital and volatile shipping lanes... if anything it shows may be the powers at be just like now sort of started realizing posturing is extremely expensive
Amazing how a old shitty vessel started such a crazy adventure
Ok now I want to watch the expanse. Just to find out what it's about
do it
"No good scifi content coming out?"
Raised by Wolves premiered yesterday, The Mandalorian S2 premieres in October and The Boys S2 is out today.
Idk if I would call 'The Boys' sci-fi, even though it is awesome. It's an alternate earth with supe's and a drug that makes them. Otherwise, it is exactly our time with our tech
@@nicolaiveliki1409 Agree with you, it borders scifi.
The cant is the ship that had ❤. That's what counts unless you have giant space guns.
Remember the Cant!
"for those young kids who dan´t have to fight for the future of your planet" > this got old very very fast.
Liberty Ship of the stars
Seems like coulda used some Terran SCV's.
Could've been worse, they could have found a xenomorph when responding to the distress signal!
Yup. Protogen Corp is clearly a subsidiary of Weyland-Yutani.
Remember the Nostromo.
or worse they could've found a floating God of thunder
Something I don’t understand about the ice-haulers is wouldn’t the various colonies/outposts in the Belt be “closed systems” and all water recycled? How much “new water” could they need?
The water was for mars and Luna. Belters give, earth and mars take.
Remember the Cant !!!!!!!!
Can't change what happened to the Cant.
I'm sure any Australian crew would pronounce the Cant with a *u*
Have you ever hear the australians say the word you are implying. Maybe they all try to say it but with australian accent as a in joke
@@scraplord6390 We just use it as an adjective and a verb… and a noun, and a…
[As for _can't,_ we pronounce it sounding like _car]._
Many people here in Australia say "cunt" pretty casually as it's such a versatile word. In many instances it's used interchangeably with the word "person" the same way we say dude, guy, etc...
@@casbot71 No i mean from my experience australians saying cunt sounds like cant anyway. So,what i am saying they could as well cant the cant cunt with fake australian accnt and no one would notice.
@@23pyromaniac Im from Ireland so I never shyed away from cunt in casual conversation neither. I think its just americans getting upset over it xD
The most epic scene was turnover for deceleration. Don't know why they were pushing ice from saturn must be ice in the belt.
The Cantaberry is for as old as she is does well.
Remember the Cant.
Well I suppose a 100 year old ship can't get out of the way of missiles fired by a stealth warship would be the obvious line
you cant keep a good ship down, unless you er on the side of "kill it with fire" and bury it with overwhelming firepower.
Well simple, no Cant, no water, everybody dehydrates. Cant = water.
Of course an expanse video...these guys just "Cant" help themselves. 😁 🖖
CANT Forever!
The Beast Mothership from Homeworld Cataclysm
Nothing new there, it's a company owned civilian ship, the sci-fi version of today's Oil tanker Ships
Old, outdated, almost falling apart AND... money saving for the company xD
Who gives a sh*t about employee safety, defensive weaponry (the cargo isn't profitable, NO! xD) or efficient operating design?
REMEMBER THE CANT!!
No time to watch this today, but you get a like nonetheless.
Also, hello to the ghosts of 2 Protogen specops who disliked this video
There is 16 now. I don't remember Protogen having that many
The Cant would be purged for Warp Taint in 40k.
in reality it was the scapu when it send the distress call
3:09 🤣🤣🤣
my guess is they removed passenger area witch had most wreck and other physicalitys .
So it most likely a death trap that wood be don to make money
@@cgi2002 1/3 ship crew and ship nasty 1/3 passenger 1/3 cargo 1/2 passenger 1/2 non passenger remove passenger zone now1/3 crew 2/3 cargo . i estimated mane med bay, mane lounge, and passenger
ps think T back crew no passenger, bottom front cargo no passenger, top front passenger zone ok
@@cgi2002 And it wood take weeks or more be cos g fores to fast will kill them true g fores is Les in space but stile no warping just mock speed at most
@@omegacommand1 that's the thing, there are actually no g forces involved beyond the ships actual thrust.
@@cgi2002 space is 3d hi burn to fast die turn in hi burn die desalinate to fast become like gay fast burn into ring vortex or just die hit space garbage like astride die and engines trust is so much and first gen ma by sicken gen but not their gen engines its like saying a race car 30 years old shod kepi up with a marination race care and they did say how long it wood take from earth to the bleat so wreaks don't seam so far of with all the problems true ps i gave you a thrum up

Here have been brave non-superpowers heroes like not Batman,Green-Arrow,Harley Quinn or Robins, but their are groups of individuals who don’t need millions dollars to fight crime or operation outside of the law! Lasting run from July to December of 2003 this is story about are true heroes! Forget Justice League,Doom Patrol, Suicide Squad and Green Lantern Corps? This individuals face non-human targets head-on with brave, courage and firearms.
Many Comic Book channel's like Comicstorian,Comics Explained,Variant Comics,NerdSync,Comic Drake,Linkara, AcidGlow, Comic Book Girl 19, ComicPOP,ComicTropes,Amy Dallen,Top 10 Nerd,Casually Comics,Blerd Without Fear,Matt Draper,Gem Mint Collectibles,Pop Culture Philosophers and few more to name, in comic book RUclips community more who explain the history and discussed heroes like Captain America, villains like Joker, events and series but never talk about this soldiers (don’t need super serum or freak accident to be a hero)are more useful than Hawkeye or Black Widow! Not HDC they bunch of aliens lovers scumbags and betrayer of human race! Know you’re do videos on movies and series offten comic books but maybe you’re talk look a short live series “Human Defense Corps” give you're thoughts and what you're the characters and military group.
Keep in mind, the video is just over 8 minutes.
I'm not mad though, if you want to do the best way to get veiws, go for it.
Airlock, medbay, same thing, sa
One thing I dislike about the show is unlike Star Wars, Star Trek, Macross, or even Warhammer there is so little lore and details on the ship types. Like Mass Effect we see ships but get little to no stats for most of them. Infuriates me.
