I aspire to be Sam Lake man. Bro writes, directs and even acts in some of the most thought provoking and genre defying titles in modern entertainment and spends his free time drinking all sorts of coffee in the most peculiar places. He’s living his best life
I didn't grow up around the Remedy games, I tried Alan Wake back in Highschool and didn't get into it and dropped it. It wasn't until I started writing and going to college for Creative Writing that I picked it back up and it finally clicked and I looked more into the series. There is so much about Sam Lake that I identify with and aspire to. Had I known more back then, he probably would have been one of my early inspirations to pursue writing. Now I guess he's a current inspiration, I'd love to workshop ideas with him.
He's like the complete opposite of David Cage: he's a European auteur that has actual talent in filmmaking and game design, as well as being an overall nice person. I'd prefer Alan Wake 1 & 2, Control, and even Quantum Break over anything Quantic Dream makes.
@@thirdcoinedge beautifully said. We love him and it will literally be the worst day for the game industry when he retires. As it stands, this studio should've closed numerous times due to poor sales so I am just thankful they've stayed alive and kept making some of the coolest games in the industry
@@ruma9687 I imagine he uses a stage name because not a whole load of people outside of Finland would know how to pronounce 'Järvi', which is Finnish for lake. I only know because I'm learning Finnish. (Which is making playing Alan Wake 2 an even more fun experience!)
@@ruma9687 like others said, this is his name: Sami Antero Järvi with the last name translating to Lake. Sam Lake is an auteur without the ego and self importance of an auteur. Even when the gameplay is not best in class, the worlds he creates makes me come back over and over again.
Great observation. His humility and passion is what makes Remedy able to get away with all these wild high concept stories which, while arguably a more "sophisticated" form of art than other games never feel inaccessible or snobby. They're just weird, meta, complex and most importantly a ton of fun.
1:43 5:01 Two of my favorite visual media makers of the last five years together in the same room just makes me feel so happy. I had the same joy when Jacob Geller talked with Noah Caldwell-Gervais about The Last of Us II on the former's podcast.
I absolutely love the smile Alan gives at the end of the musical sequence, it perfectly captures how I felt as a player just going through that sequence! It's like a state of confusion transitioning into, "that was awesome".
Thought one: I wish I enjoyed ANYTHING a tenth as much as Sam Lake seems to enjoy everything (and I don't consider myself someone lacking joi de vivre) Thought two: can we get an Ilkka Villi cut

Well, when a game designer decides to use a stage name instead of his own there IS s touch of ego maniac. But only a healthy ammount :)

Well said. There's only a handful of works of fiction that managed to draw me in as much as his.
Basically, kojima without the "kojima"
I had a dream of Max Payne. He had an Instagram and did TikTok dances on it, but it was alright.
I see what you did there. Just wanted you to know.
Sam Lake and Mike Flanagan fanboying over each other gave me life
When?!

Sam is a treasure, he must be protected at all costs.

Wait Sam had a dream about a whole musical chapter?

Americans are very much the same. So much so, we kind of had an entire break up with Britain and Coffee was one of the things involved.

He seems delightful. Like his friends ask him how weird we getting today he shrugs "4"
After playing Alan Wake II, I've come to the conclusion that it ain't coffee what this dude is always drinking...
This guy is Hideo Kojima caliber story writer.
He's Western Hideo Kojima
You forgot one where he randomly danced at 0:40 in Old Gods of Asgard - Herald of Darkness.
Something is really in that drink that makes him tripped.
Parallel cuts between Sam Lake's and Alan's talks are such a chef's kiss. Thanks for the video ^^

As someone who grew up with the first Max Payne game, all I see is Max Payne 😂
In the words of an FBI agent:
