    I've been laughed at for stopping because of snow and ice. First and foremost, I'm a grown man so that crap doesn't bother me at all. I have no desire to prove to anyone that I have big cajones. Second, I'd rather them laugh at me because I got off of the road than have them laugh because my truck is laying on it's side with a hazmat load.

    Back in the late 70’s I drove for a U S Mail contractor driving from Scranton Pa to Philadelphia Pa 5 nights a week on a scheduled run. And we had to follow the same motto as the mail persons. “Neither rain nor snow nor heat of day nor dark of night will keep these couriers from their appointed rounds”
    The only time we stopped was when the post office cancelled our runs , in the five and a half years I haul d the mail I think I was told to stay home maybe 4 times if that many.
    I learned a lot of winter skills driving in the inclement weather but the best was staying as alert as possible and aware of your surroundings and how your truck reacts. I did all this without anti lock brakes where you didn’t apply your foot brake until you applied your trailer brakes first all in a short nose White 9000

      I've driven in quite a few blizzards, freezing rain, on Rhodes packed with a foot of snow that stayed there all winter etc and it is a scale.. Or group of skills. You really learn to feel the road and how to handle losing traction.
      Anti-lock brakes don't really help though in my experience. Play if you are using the brakes at all it is very lightly. I'm worried about these new trucks.. with things like Auto braking, emergency braking etcetera that override the driver. We had some with auto braking that would react to Bridges and slam on the brakes hard.. or see a car in another Lane in a curve and lock the truck up. The mechanics disabled all of that crap

      I learned what real winter driving is in New England. I've driven through blizzards. Came down the mountain from Denver in icy rain. Spent a couple days driving the back roads in Rhode Island Maine and Massachusetts on good deep snow that stays there 3 months a year play and they don't even bother trying to clear. And the South where I live if there is an inch of snow they shut down the town for days. Up there if there's a foot of packed snow people are honestly confused as to why you would not drive like normal

      @@OTRBandit Nice to see someone else using a generator. I've been running a 3800 watt Champion generator for about twelve years on my truck. In the winter time, I figure it saves me about $350 a week in fuel costs. I also run a diesel bunk heater and you're right, they sure do a nice job keeping the inside of the truck warm. I also don't think the noise is a problem. When I'm parked between two idling trucks, I can't even hear my generator running. I run up in North Dakota so there is many nights, in the winter, twenty to thirty below zero. I found a 15 gallon metal gas tank that I bolted to the top of my generator frame and teed into the gas line so my generator will run for about 3 days before I have to fill it back up with gas. I ran 2 extension cords inside the frame rails and one goes up into the bunk and runs my refrigerator, my TV, and my microwave when the truck isn't running, and the other cord I have plugged into my 1500 watt block heater and I also have a 300 watt oil pan heater plugged into that cord, plus I have a small 10 amp trickle charger under the bunk that I have hooked up to my batteries that charges when the generator is on so I don't have to worry about my batteries running low. I have been parked for up to 3 days when it was 30 to 40 below zero and my truck started up like it was the middle of the summer time. I also wouldn't be without a bunk heater or the generator ever again. Also, in the summertime, I have a small one room air conditioner that pulls 575 watts that I cool the truck with when I'm parked. Altogether, my generator saves me about $5000 a year in fuel costs plus the idle time on my engine. In the summer time, my generator will run about 6 days on the two gas tanks because I'm not pulling it as hard without all the engine heaters plugged in. Altogether, I have way less than $1000 tied up in the whole system which is a lot less than the $10-$12,000 an APU costs. My generators last about two years and then I just toss them in the dumpster and buy a new one for $325. Good luck on your travels and stay safe.

    • @OTRBandit
      @OTRBandit  6 месяцев назад

      @@jefftutsch5730 thank you so much for all that information. I think I’m gonna get some of that same stuff set up on my truck. I’m going to get me a trickle charger and also I’m going to get me a pan heater. I already have block heater that I use and this thing saves so much money. It is not even funny. I was thinking about buying APU but whenever the APU breaks down, you have to take it into shop and spend hundreds sometimes even thousands of dollars to get it fixed and all the last time and revenue with the truck sitting in the shop while the APU is getting fixed is not a good deal for me. Whenever this generator breaks down, I can just take it in to Harbor Freight and get a new one because I got a warranty on it and then I get a new one. I can get another warranty on that one. In the summertime I also use little portable standup AC that I keep in one of my cabinets on the side over here in my sleeper and it is not loud at all. I can barely hear it when it’s running. Idling truck is a lot more louder than this.
