I'm laughing my butt off at how they say ipfire avoids any attack through DDoS and the internet....you CANT avoid a DDoS you can simply set up multiple filters and pray they friggin work and you have the bandwidth to compensate for whats coming at you otherwise your better off unplugging your modem for a few hours that way your ISP is forced to filter the data not you.

Don’t want to run on the parade, but many of these products only provide the solutions you mention if you subscribe to their service. For instance, untangled only does limited virus protection and does not include intrusion detection unless you subscribe for 50 bucks a year.

What would you expect? Just because something is open source, doesn't mean it's completely free. Open source is what the name implies, a free program or OS which uses open source code that anyone can read and improve without having to pay for it.
For example most Linux distros are free, that still doesn't mean that developer is obligated to provide let's say free technical support, buy computers with pre.installed OS and send them to those who order them for free etc.
If someone offers to install electronic lock on your apartments door completely free of charge and you know lock in question is open source (meaning ANYONE can find out every single exploit they can use to open it), would you let them do so?
Would you use firewall or any product for that matter, that uses code that anyone can exploit to their hearts content?
Fact that you have to pay something, mean they are legally obligated to update and maintain programs security and such, if it's free, then no one is legally obligated to do jack shit about it.
