    Pioneer sounds very full to me, and better to my ears, on every variation of your testing. Looks great as well. I must conclude, though… that I like them both, very much. Thank you for taking the time for our enjoyment! Makes a day better to find videos such as this. 👏🏼
    Ludwig and Rogers cannot be denied as some of the best ever made. Even some of their “budget” products.

      Thank you so much for your thoughts. Im happy that you enjoyed video. I agree that they both sound great, but very different. The Rogers is much dryer but that works well in a lot of recording situations.

      @@eddieavakian Could be. I record far less these days, but plan on eventually doing more. I have so many snare drums that are good, I have got to stop getting additional snares at this point. Still… if I get gear buying craziness again… I may go for a pioneer. Something about them talks to me. 🪄✨🥁

    I own a 1957 Pioneer with brass hardware. It's a natural mahagony shell..and it has no internal muffler.....I love it's fat sound! Those drums you have are beautiful instruments!

      Thanks Richard! I love that Pioneer. I actually bought another one after I made this video. Got a two tone ducco finish in silver and blue. These old drums all sound different from each other. Even if they’re the same model. That’s what I love about older drums.

    My first snare drum was a blue and sliver duco Pioneer. Hearing you demo both drums on their own, I preferred the Pioneer, but... when you played along with the backing tracks, the Luxor was my preference. And those champagne Rogers drums... fantastic sounds!

      Yeah the Luxor is dryer and focused. I recently purchased another Pioneer and it sounds totally different from this one. Thats what I love about vintage drums. And I love love love this Rogers kit. Thanks Jeremy

    I have a pioneer- model from Ludwig. It sounds very good with it`s Brasshoops. Less hardware push the shellsound. Fantastic!😊

    Can't ever go wrong with a 6-lug snare. They have some awesome tone. I've got a few WFL and Trans Badge 5.5x14's and a WFL 6.5x14 6-lug which is crazy good. The old Ludwig 1920's NOB 2-pc snares with 6-lugs are awesome as well and sound way bigger than they are. My 4x14 sounds like a 6x14 and my 6.5x14 sounds like an 8x14. They did something right back then!

    Very cool video! I have a 1962 Rogers 6-lug wood snare, same blue sparkle finish as yours. Very nice sounding snare.

      @eddieavakian  Год назад

      Thanks Dave. Yeah that 6 lug Luxor is an under-appreciated instrument in my opinion so I wanted to make a video on it to give it some love. Being a 62, yours is likely a 3 play Jasper shell w bread and butter lugs which makes is a favorite amount collectors. Beautiful drum!

    This is a second comment to one of your videos. Fascinating and informed commentary. Let me get out of the way my opinion of your 'drumming', 'intuitive, inspired and appropriate'(I really like it!). A 'loud drummer', I would've never imagined any other snare than my 6 1/2" x 14" ten lug Bronze Ludwig. Enter a late 60's Pioneer. The organic quality of a wooden shelled snare drum is hard to deny. Reduction of the number of lugs(stretch out the length between tension held on the head/index of head & hoop to shell) opens up the drum to otherwise stifled harmonics. Complexity vs articulation? FOR ME, more of an 'interacting with' than a 'playing on'. Yes, one can tune an 8 or 10 lug drum to sound 'Fatter', but for me, a 6 lug seems to provide that 'by design'. THOUGH, if one is a heavy hitter and needs a 'compression pop' snare sound, 8 and 10 lug drums were designed to more easily achieve and maintain that sound. Fat, Wet and Lazy(what am I tryin' to tell ME?)
    Grateful to Have Discovered Your Channel,
    Ted Furlo

      I appreciate the comment and the compliment Ted! Thank you for that. Your Bronze 6 1/2 by 14 Ludwig is an amazing drum for sure. I have a brass one and an A&F that’s Bronze, both of these appear in my videos and amount my most versatile. You describe the Pioneer perfectly in that it does that fat low thing as if it was designed to do it. For me to get that from one of my 8 or 10 lugs would mean having the lugs so loose that they wouldn’t stay at the same tension very long. The higher tension for the same tuning with 6 rods holds a little better over time. The drum also gets some crazy over tones when tuned high especially with 1 ply heads like the Ambassadors but I’d prefer to start totally wide open and use dampening as needed rather than use a pre dampened head.

    Is that a badge from the Drum Shop in Detroit? I miss that place.

      Yes. George Hamilton’s Drum Shop. Detroit. I’ve never been there myself. It’s so cool that you picked up on that and know the place!

    I have owned both drums.....Tuning range is the only problem with 6 lug snare drums.I used the Luxor in several shows...

    • @eddieavakian
      @eddieavakian  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah tuning in general is more difficult. At least it was for me. I liked the low fat tunings the best. You can still keep significant tension while still maintaining that low pitch.

    Silver seems more resonant, blue might work better for Americana.

      Yeah the Ludwig was less controlled but very alive. The Luxor had a wonderful thuddy sound that would work in specific situations. I always think of the song “Vultures” by John Mayer when I think of that vibe. That’s one of my favorite snare sounds. Thanks for watching!
