This is such a common and frustrating experience. Once I was communicating a problem to my landlord and the advice he gave me started with “if you were my daughter…”
I’m confused…I would find that to be a reassuring phrase because he’s basically saying “if I were giving advice to someone I cared the most about in the whole world”… how is that offensive?
Everytime I need a quote on anything, inside my home or if I have to go somewhere, I always set the time limit up front. If the quote apt is at 1pm, I ask "how long will this take, I have to leave for an apt at 2pm so I have one hour blocked for this" and all the other things you also said. This keeps us on a timeline and then they are forced to move quickly and cut the bullshit. If they say they need more than 1 hour, I say all the other quotes I've gotten took them about an hour, I am not rescheduling with you, I will just go with another quote.
This is so funny! My husband sells building material ( anything you can think of) to builders and contractors and is such a regular guy-straight to the point and can clock those weirdos 😂 Always use small contractors ❤
OMG! This is so typical. I'm the decision maker too! I had an old guy, AC guy, who, when I told him no way was I paying his price, said "Can I talk to the man of the house then". I reported him to the company and chewed him out also. They kept apologizing over and over.
I had to replace both furnace and ac a few years ago and it’s was $18,000. Home owning sucks. I’ve also had to replace my water filtration system (I’m on a well), and my water heater, in the last 5 years. Adulting is the pits.
OMG I feel this in my core!!! I have had situations like this and it drives me insane!! One time at a car dealership, they asked me if I needed my husband to sign for the car loan.. ahhh NO, I'm the breadwinner, guy. 🙄
I just bought a car and the finance manager asked what my husband does for work. Does it matter? I'm buying the car for myself, he's not buying it for me.
Yes! I had this problem when I bought my car and the sales guy kept pressuring me to buy GAP insurance! I was already at max with the payment and GAP would have added $100+ and the guy kept saying “are you sure you don’t have a little wiggle room?” I finally told him that if he tried to sell me one more thing other than the car that I would walk out
My husband and I got a quote from some window people in our area, and they were at our house FOR FOUR HOURS. They even stayed while I made dinner…..it was absolutely nuts! They still call us from random numbers and this probably happened a year ago!
I used to work in a pawn shop and I was the manager. At 25. I gave someone a price one time on an item and they said “can I speak with the manager? Where is he?” I spun around in a circle and said “hi the manager here”
if you haven't checked already, you could ask your energy company if there are discounts for updated heating/cooling systems. A lot of them have incentives for installing energy efficient devices like that. Just a thought! :)
This just happend to me a few weeks ago, I posted a motorcycle for sale on Facebook. The guy and about 5 of his buddies showed up to see it and as I was showing him everything my husband comes out. He looks at him and goes “would you take 3,000” my husband looked at him and said “ask her, it’s her bike” and I was like no absolutely not. He bought the bike 🏍️ 🤦🏼♀️ It was MY motorcycle, posted on MY Facebook, messaging with ME I can’t.
I sold a toolbox that went in the bed of my truck and the guy who bought it thought it was my husband’s. Nope it’s mine. It didn’t fit into my new truck. Also don’t have a husband.
Get a heat pump! It does AC too. Energy efficient and you’ll save so much on utility bills! It really is the future of home heating and cooling. I’m sure your home has so many air leaks too. Better insulation and an air source heat pump. It’ll save you so much long-term!
I…. Am speechless. I would fucking go off. You are so right in feeling pissed off. The patriarchy is so embedded everywhere, you can’t unsee it once you do.
When we purchased our home, I coordinated everything, including homeowner's insurance. Imagine my surprise when all of the mail about the insurance was addressed to my husband! The literal SAME THING happened to me when I was getting the top row on my porch brick repaired. People are so slimy, and he also kept tiptoeing around the price. Whenever we have someone in our house for a quotr, my husband will barely acknowledge them. He's well aware of the time and effort I've done into researching what we need exactly for our house. If he happens to get stuck talking to someone, he tells them, "You'll have to talk to my wife. She knows more about this than I do."
He might have thought you meant it was up to your husband when you said you had to discuss it with him- can only hope, but probably not. But it’s weird because I’ve said that so many times and never had this problem. I am in the same position- I’m home all the time and I know 100% of what’s going on with everything, and I also do all the talking even if my husband is with me. That would piss me off too if someone said that to me! Oh, ALSO, since he’s in sales I guarantee he’s heard this line before about let me talk it over with my husband, etc. Definitely a weird thing for him to say.
😂😂I have had similar situations with my older home.. some of it is yes this have not been done right.. part of it is they all say "why was it done this way" to make themselves sound like the best. Ugh hate the sales guys

okay so I live in the Dayton area as well (Centerville) and my ex was hired as a sales guy at one of the local roofing companies but he literally had to QUIT during his training because of how icky their entire system was. They wanted him to go door-knocking on random people's doors and tell them their roof needed fixed (whether true or not!) and do ANYTHING POSSIBLE to keep the conversation going. They had training videos telling sales people how to find something around the exterior of the house to compliment (like their flowers) to get them hooked into the conversation! My ex said that he even heard the other sales guys bragging about not leaving and keeping the conversation going when an old woman told them she wasn't interested multiple times. it was all SO GROSS! He couldn't bring himself to do the job and he was even a car salesman at one point 🤣🤣 As a woman living alone, I would be so uncomfortable if a random sales guy wouldn't leave my home. One spouse knowing more about the house made me laugh because I feel like it's mostly true in my relationship, too. Like whenever the pest guy has come over, I primarily deal with him. Or, a funny story from recently, is my fiancé was out picking up stuff without me, and there was a cable company with a booth set up near the store exit (which, HATE, by the way). And they were trying to pitch to him, and he told me he said to them, "My wife handles this stuff." Apparently they tried to push and he just kept reinforcing the message that the wife (aka me) would handle that stuff.

He was ready to buy his car for full price just to get out of there until I went in and negotiated them down three more times. Nah, son. You better put some respect on my name when you’re dealing with me. Just because you boys are intimidated by competent women doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
My partner and I moved in together in June and literally it’s so true that all of the guys we’ve had come in to look at plumbing have talked to him and he has NO idea 😅 I feel like I’m invisible, despite it being me asking all the questions… and they answer MY questions to my BF 😂😂😂 I’ve got an awesome female electrician and I just take recommendations from her now - I’ve had enough of being mansplained to and scammed!! 🙄🙄🙄

I was like…sir you could have at least told us or suggested all electric if you couldn’t finish the job! It took months to find someone to come behind them because most people wanted to do the full install. I literally hate these house repair people.
I think it’s funny because sometimes I blame my husband for why I don’t want to make a decision. If I happen to answer the door to solicitors (which I never do) I always tell them that I’m not interested because my husband isn’t there to talk to and I don’t want to change anything without him lol 😂😂 It’s an excuse so I don’t have to talk to people lol
$30k??? My house is almost 4000 Sq ft, we need two furnaces for it because of how it's built and we just got TWO furnaces & and A/C installed for $10k...and that included vent work!
Always remember it is okay to hate people and hate people’s speech because it is not one’s responsibility to like everyone in this world nor is it one’s responsibility to like what others say.
