Soooo where do I even start with this? As a selector I feel the urge to see myself as an "expert" on the band/album/song I recommend. You know, knowing all the context behind the music, motivation, production choices and all that jazz... but here? To this day I don't have any idea WHY this was created. I don't have an explanation, but I have my own interpretation of what's going on. A little bit of context first though. Boredoms are a band which origins go back to Japanese noise scene. They shared this scene with Merzbow, Hijokaidan, The Gerogerigegege etc - very violent & nihilistic soundscapes, which I believe were representant of the underground circles' discontent of socio-economic situation in Japan. In that time, Yamatsuka Eye, the mind behind Boredoms, started a very controversial noise project called Hanatarash, which was founded before Boredoms were even a thing. This guy was so crazy, that once he drove a fucking bulldozer into the venue in which he was performing. He was notorious for his shows being dangerous to the audience, but he garnered a lot of attention becaue of it. Boredoms on the other hand were moving in realms of rock, but still deeply tied in the noise roots. Basically, they played very dissonant noise punk, which with time started seeing some evolution (they also cited Sonic Youth as a big influence, a very imporant no wave band, which also delved into darker themes and sounds). It started to feature editing in the studio and post-production, but because of their nihilistic noise scene roots... it wasn't really representant of anything? This concept is often described as absolute music, which, in short, doesn't rely on relative context, unlike most of the stuff we listen to regularly. It doesn't feature purpose or a theme, it doesn't try to represent a mood or an atmosphere, which is VERY weird when you think about it. Because of the nature of music, which we can experience only with our ears, stripping it off the context makes it even more abstract to us. I think this idea is deeply intertwined with what strive Boredoms create. After a decade of being active, Boredoms took a sharp turn from their noise punk roots and delved into electronica & krautrock (they were often compared to Can, a very prominent krautrock outfit) and embraced jamming (which you mentioned) as their core foundation. Eye shuffled around bandmembers and he ended up with a quintet of himself (the guy behind the production, electronics and sound manipulation), one guitarist and three drummers. With time, because of those member shuffles, their sound changed from this noisy dissonant punk to space-y primal rock, which featured tribal drumming, wonky guitar chords, electronic soundscaping and space synths. And now, with all that said, what is this track to me? I consider this to be a ritual, an incantation of some sorts. Tribal drumming and chanting vocals screaming "VISION, CREATION, NEWSUN" intertwined with extensive post-production and sound manipulation, which gets progressively more prominent with time, create these crescendos that feel like a tribe is ascending to some worship-like spiritual hights. All of this though is the context I can come up with, since the band does not state what it's supposed to represent, if anything at all. Instead of trying to interpret/understand this sound (which, let's be honest, the band doesn't make it easier to describe, quite the opposite), what I like to do is to feel it, take it in. That's how imo this kind of music should be experienced. All of this though, could be considered meaningless ramblings which try to describe the undescribeable. Now I feel kind of bad making you do this deep dive into realms of experimental music! Trust me, though when I first heard it I felt the same way as you did - I was completely confused... but intrigued! I hope I didn't completely turn you off with this song, but interested you to try some avant-garde popular music! (maybe less eccentric for the start ^^)
As a fan of the Boredoms (and all the other strange, and amazing, music coming out back in the 90's), I think you did a damn fine job summing things up; and I laughed my ass off at your "have a fun one" (I'm assuming you were the one that recommended this).
People can donate to the channel and in doing so get to tell me exactly what song I'm reacting to for a video. This process is called "Special Selections" and thus the people selecting the songs are selectors. If this interests you, you can find links for submitting a Special Selection as well as seeing all of the songs currently in the list/queue in the LinkTree link in the description.
I'm fully on the "genius" side of this dichotomy. This whole album is one of my all-time favourites; it's got such an open, freeing quality to it that you just don't get from most studio recordings, while still feeling measured enough (there's always some part of it that's either carrying the throughline of the track or moving onto the next one) to keep it from going full free jazz improvisation chaos on me. It's an almost overwhelming bliss that I pull out when I'm lying out in a sunny field or just really want a groove to hyperfixate on.
This is my second favorite of theirs. I find Pop Tatari to be a masterpiece. I saw them play the main stage and back stage at lollapalooza and I was on two hits of blotter. I have been following them since. On a side note I saw OoioO like 8 years ago and is by far one of the greatest performances I have ever witnessed.
It sounds like someone took free-jazz era Coltrane, The Beatles' Revolution #9 "collage" style (and maybe some of their psychedelic music), Stockhausen's electronic experimentations, Can's experimental music, Sonic Youth noise rock, and African/tribal drumming and threw it all into a blender. I'm not sure if what came out is genius or insanity, but it's certainly an experience! I'm not sure if I have any critical insights beyond noting the variety of (potential) influences, and I'm not even sure how I feel about it, but it's definitely interesting!
Seen these dudes six times since '94 and they absolutely decimate. Vision Creation Newsun is fully blissed out Krautrock. Super AE is the crown, though. Check out "Super Going," it's a monster (though both albums the tracks flow into each-other, so a full album listen is required for the full context). If you wanna peep some live footage Live at the Fuji Rock Festival 2001 is pretty great. They put out a live recording called Live At Sunflancisco that's on RUclips. The picture quality is weak, but It's still worth checking out. Then for a real Mind F, check out New York New Music Seminar.
Yeah, I think hearing this album in full is 100% necessary to understanding this track. It's almost entirely a single, unending piece of music that I didn't really "get" until I heard the entire record. I've never heard another record like this one and since my first listen to the first few songs on this over a decade ago its become one of my favorite albums ever
love the krautrock-era Boredoms! Makes perfect "sense" to me - it's a joyous raucous trancy psychedelic jam! i don't really hear the "dissonance" you mention once the groove gets going - it all melds into a furiously ecstatic melange of rhythm, melody and noise. It is blissful music to me :)
I don't even feel the "this is genius" and "what the hell" are mutually exclusive. This song and album kept me feeling that WTH feeling while I appreciated the genius in it. Dimi's explanation about it being kind of "absolute music" certainly helps understanding what about this captivated me so much. Same with Can, an undeniable comparison for sure. I also got a weird life-affirming feel from the entire record. Maybe the context is more of a "fill in the blanks" thing, whatever you get from it, that's exactly what it is. Really enjoyed your exercise in making sense of it, Bryan!
the next song (Star) from the same album is even crazier. Also it's actually insane if you listen to their very early work and see that they can play those totally chaotic songs flawlessly as well. Like Domsbore, Bubblepop shot or Hoy. And if you ever want to get this on cd Id recommend going on valve records website. The Australian version is the best looking regarding the print quality. I even prefer it to the japanese version.
i bought this album in japan in a box before the US version came out, 2CDs one with live tracks, also the box itself made noise. Their peak album before they got rid of the guitar and bass player. Saw them live many times including on 8/8/8 with 88 drummers. Best live band ever. But this album all the way through is magic.
That was a very interesting track. I've never heard of this band, but seems like something I should really be checking out. It was all over the place in the best way.
Alright, 5 minutes in, this song is sick. I have a little experience with experimental rock/noise like this but I haven't dug too deep. Definitely need to check out more of this band. Usually I only watch the videos on songs that I know, because I'm here for the reaction and analysis not for the music itself but I'm real glad I checked this one out.
Boredoms is probably my favorite band of all time... Sonic Youth and Spacemen 3 also strong contenders. It's important to note that Boredoms is primarily a psychedelic outfit... alot of improv, alot of repetition, and the drums... the disjointed guitar solo at the ending is really no different than the stuff Jerry Garcia did playing a 24 minute version of a 4 minute song, in my opinion Boredoms does it better because that's just the way the piece is meant to be, instead of a drawn out self appreciating solo. I suggest listening to Boredoms Super AE album. If you really don't get it, don't listen to Pop Tatari or Chocolate Synthesizer, cause it won't help. Also yr correct, it doesn't end abruptly, it's a concept album.. I don't understand what you mean that it's all over, cause it's essentially Spiritualized-Electric Mainline guitar lead the entire track... with drum solo in the middle... then back into it... then the lead into the "Star" track... they are literally just saying "Vision Creation New Sun" IN ENGLISH.
The funny thing is, this comes from their most accessible album… I was always under the impression that a lot of their music was supposed to be baffling, so in that respect your reaction was spot on. Personally I love their anarchic noise collages
Its like if you locked a punk band (and 2 extra drummers) away in a room cut off from all society and all sensory perceptions for 100 years, then recorded the result. Also. I really appreciate your thoughts on this one as a music fan and subpar bass player that camt read music I aleays wondered how much I was missing when I was in a room with Boredoms music playing l.
It's white light, the song is sun worship. I think the circle is meant to be the Sun. This album was all sun worship imo, theres a ton of bright guitars and cymbal all over it. Just imagine people in the desert jamming this out under the blazing shadowless sun. Youre right to say the production "feels studio level but not like a song", because they're getting studio quality while also being able to feel it like you're in a place where people are jamming. Like the purity of sound of the studio, with the frenzy of a tribal jamming, thats definitely intentional
Even as a fan of Boredoms , it's amazing in their career they went from the album Soul Discharge to this. I think for most people they went from "wtf ?" to"that's almost listenable."
This was such a trip, never heard of this band but I'm dumbfolded by the amount of dexterity needed to do something that sounds 100% improvised and precisely technical and cohesive at the same time.
Having seen Boredoms many times from the two singer earlier era to the Eye banging on three mounted guitars and those weird midi balls he moves around and only three drummers besides him, he is a captivating performer. One of the punk legends imho. Great review.
When you said the song doesn't feel like a song is the most accurate part of the whole video. IMO it's not appropriate to take a single Boredoms "song" and experience it in a vacuum. Boredoms albums are an adventure made up of many small adventures. Some of them will be more smooth going and "make sense" more in the way of traditional songwriting, others will be chaotic and difficult. Boredoms music really needs to be enjoyed as an album. Picking things out as individual songs isn't fair to the work as a whole, or each individual track.
I'm not going to comment since I can only be cynical. However, I will say you missed probably the best multi-media experience for an age. I mentioned before Earthside and "All We Knew and Ever Loved", which stands alone as a musical piece, but, coupled with the amazing animated video that goes with it, is outstanding. Even if you don't do a reaction, watch this and listen to this, and hopefully you'll love it. I do.
I just got this feeling that the beginning reminded me of this old brittish psyche-folk band called Comus. You should really check out the first album of theirs; First Utterance
Experimental music that is performed live will forever be a mystery to me, how can people actually play this stuff to any level of precision, how do they count their 57 bar rests and come in exactly on the and of 2 with a weird technic that requires very precise movement to match the transient to the hit that comes in on the e- of 3? These musicians are on something else.
Ya know, usually I bring up the performance side of music during my analysis but my brain have broken to such a degree that the logistical nightmare of playing this never even occurred to me.
I don't care if this doesn't make sense...but I want to surf to this. EDIT: To get a little more in depth, since obviously I don't mean this sounds like "surf rock" per se... it's just the atmosphere they've created here. I think it's the wide open production combined with the propulsive rhythms, and all the weird disparate elements making it feel like I'm kind of riding along on top of (or in the midst of) all the chaos. If you try to focus too much on any one element it's easy to lose your footing, but if you just sort of relax and vibe with it you can somehow keep your balance....or something like that, idk. I've never surfed a day in my life lol, this is just where my brain went as I listened to the song with you. Maybe another way to look at it, if you imagine yourself laying back relaxing at a crowded beach. There's all kinds of different people there doing all kinds of different things--kids building sandcastles, young adults drinking and partying, people throwing frisbee or playing beach volleyball, swimming, surfing, tanning, that one old guy scouring the beach for treasure with a metal detector...None of them are really moving together as a unit so in one sense it's kind of chaotic. But somehow it all comes together to create those "beach" vibes that you can just soak in. It's a bunch of disparate elements that join together to form a distinctive atmosphere, just like this song.
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan? The band is call "Lovebites" They all The Beautiful Queens heavy metal band right now in the earth. They are really really Genius and World class musicians. Phenomenal. And they have a lot diehard fans like me😁. The fans called Wolfpack. The song is "Set the world on fire" from they live concert. Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Thank you
I myself prefer to play this band's earlier work simultaneously with Naked City on loop when I sleep 👌 Nearly impossible to describe all this band has done 🙄🤔 Very very one of a kind band 👌 You definitely definitely have a radically different response to their other material 😂👌
This vaguely reminded me of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, an abstract mass of notes and musical ideas that just confuses you upon first listen. Interesting stuff.
As much as I love Davis, that album (and a lot of free jazz) just isn't my jam. Stuff like this has the potential to be evocative and profound but it heavily relies on the listeners mood more than anything else.
@@CriticalReactions I get what you mean, I always saw Bitches Brew as the breeding ground of a lot of (more listenable) fusion bands rather than a easy listen in and of itself. Keep up the good work!
@@justsomejusstsome8994 I understand why people enjoy it but it's just a hair too far on the unstructured side for my liking. I do appreciate and recognize its contributions to music though.
@@CriticalReactions That's fair. It's definitely INSANE in the literal sense. Sounds like something from 3000 years in the future made by celestial beings of light.
I really love your channel, I like that you will give anything a chance. You've also introduced me to some awesome music so I thought I'd return the favor. Has anyone mentioned Esben and the Witch to you yet? It seems up your alley from watching what you reacted to and enjoyed. Their single Marching Song is a good start, but if you were to react to any song I'd recommend No Dog. I saw them live and it was amazing!
@@CriticalReactions Cool, they're earlier stuff was a little more of what I consider the gothic style on the Hexagons EP, Especially track two The Flight. The band might think differently but it had a gothic vibe to my ears.
Maybe you should have reacted to a live video of these guys feom about that time. I got familiar with the group when they still were a guitar-oriented noise geoup, but i did not really love them before they turned into the experimental multi-drummer band. The Circle album documents a fantastic episode of the group‘s ever changing evolution, but its surely not the best.
Being a part of the community I’ve encountered this one before… this time through didn’t really do anything to improve my opinion of it 😅. You mention it sounding like a band’s warmup or practice and I think I said exactly that in my original review of the album it comes from. It’s sort of a haphazard collection of ideas and noodling that doesn’t really translate into anything musical for me. The one word it brings to mind for me is “mess”.
'Mess' is certainly a word for it but I tried to be a bit nicer in my reaction. 😅 Dimi explained it as something closer to "absolute music" -- the sounds of music without the structure of song. It's an interesting way to write music but I don't know if it's for me.
For sure - I probably should have chosen a word with less negative connotation! I think Dimi’s description is an elegant one, and accurate: it is definitely a collection of sounds outside the boundaries of structure… that’s just not something I know how to appreciate I guess!
I don't think I realized until now just now 'annoying' this song actually was for me. It was like I was being taunted to understand something mortal brains were not designed to comprehend. :)
Dude. I think you might be the only person on RUclips to react to the boredoms. Cool. But you picked the worst example of what the boredoms really sound like.
Soooo where do I even start with this?

Ya know, usually I bring up the performance side of music during my analysis but my brain have broken to such a degree that the logistical nightmare of playing this never even occurred to me.
Check out the song “Cabin Man” by Cows. It’s a spoken-word noise rock song with lyrics that really hit he for me. The ending is absolutely bananas.
That was beautifully stated.
Yeah I always felt like I was being pummeled by a waterfall everytime I listened to this song.
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan?
The band is call "Lovebites"
They all The Beautiful Queens heavy metal band right now in the earth. They are really really Genius and World class musicians. Phenomenal.
And they have a lot diehard fans like me😁. The fans called Wolfpack.
The song is "Set the world on fire" from they live concert.
Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Thank you
I myself prefer to play this band's earlier work simultaneously with Naked City on loop when I sleep 👌
Nearly impossible to describe all this band has done 🙄🤔
Very very one of a kind band 👌
You definitely definitely have a radically different response to their other material 😂👌
NAKED CITY RULEZ !!!
@@kraftyhandz Wearing my Torture Garden Tshirt right now 🤘Word up my friend 👌

@@ambassadortourettes753 as are you man! 😎 have a wonderful day :)
@@CriticalReactions Damn, you don't like Bitches Brew? You should revisit that. Best Jazz album of all time.

Please react to Vindicta-Slice it 😈
It is the best song of the year 😻
And i Can tell you it is a heavy one ☠️
try Cory & The Mandara Suicide Pyramid Action Or Gas Satori
NO FUCKING WAY. BOREDOMS RECEIVED ATTENTINO?
I give attention to a LOT of bands that barely get mentioned outside of specific circles, much less in the reaction scene. :)
It doesn't sound familiar. I'll have to look into them sometime.
Oh... I know this one :D
I wonder why :D
Please react to flux by poppy. Amazing song!
Leprous - Nighttime Disguise please
I very much enjoyed watching your facial expressions during this song lol confusion, annoyance and intrigue
I don't think I realized until now just now 'annoying' this song actually was for me. It was like I was being taunted to understand something mortal brains were not designed to comprehend. :)
please show him the live video of them carrying the drum kits through the audience
Dude. I think you might be the only person on RUclips to react to the boredoms. Cool. But you picked the worst example of what the boredoms really sound like.
