- Kentucky Headhunters perform a cover version of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" live at the Farm Aid concert in Irving, Texas on March 14, 1992.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/
Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised nearly $80 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?
I just got to see these fellas last night. 2023. They kick ass still today. My wife and myself loved it so much
Where?
One of country music's most underrated bands.
country music? What I have heard from these guys is good old rock!
@@scottbohe7006 They're Country Rock do you're both right lol
❤you damned right.
I agree 100%
Country rock, Southern rock, Texas fried-ZZ Top-SRV steam-cooked-blues, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KHH’s, or even some of the up-tempo country, it’s all better than Auto-tune, canned-digital track, hip-hop, techno, stuff of today.
Jesus is the best friend a farmer could ever want!!!
Or china
I'm not a jesus person first but aman to the song 👍📹1️⃣🌄🇦🇺
And the worst enemy for a kid with cancer.
you do know this is a song mocking religion right?
JESUS IS LORD OF LORDS AND KING OF KINGS AND HES MORE THAN A FRIEND HES MY LORD AND SAVIOR AMEN
I blew a set of speakers in my Datsun truck playing this song at FULL volume. LOVE LOVE LOVE HEADHUNTERS!
Good to see a huge audience like this enjoying a song about forgiveness and Jesus.
This is my song for my memorial service some day !!!!! Loved it since 1970 !!!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA
This was played at a dear friend's Celebration of Life yesterday
Mine too!
Me too
hey pop im on board with that throw in for me chimes of freedom
May the Spirit In the Sky BLESS farmers EVERYWHERE!!!!
Thanks!
"I've been a sinner, yes I've sinned" This guy knows the Word.
@Screaming Whispers The actually lyrics, while seeming the opposite, actually mean the same thing.
Elaine, I’ve not heard that. I’ll have to look into it.
@@caddyman7725 when he died, it's as if he never sinned because Jesus ultimately forgave him of his sins. At least that's how I interpret it 😁
@@elaines5750 Now, that is an interesting way of looking at it, and truthful, too. Thanks!
@@caddyman7725 You are very welcome :)
Great time as I lay with cancer waiting for it to hit still great song! Wish me a fast cross over people!
Praying for you
Godspeed dude :)
Peace and comfort to you. Psalm 90.

GOD Bless The American Farmers & Their Work Ethic for Feeding Our Families !!!
I absolutely love this. Im a proud granddaughter of a farmer of the 60's. Hallelujah 🙌
I thought Norman Greenbaum killed it in 1970 when I was 13. This rendition is absolutely awesome!
Man I just turned 40 and it's terrifying how far removed even people my age are from classic rock bands, blues & soul. Their loss :)
I where 10 in 1969 when this came out I love it since the first note now when I passe away I want this, song on my funeral
Norman Greenbaum is still the best!!❤❤
ony way to top it , kentucky
To this day, nobody has ever been able to 100% replicate Norman's guitar sound on this song.
One of the most underrated bands. Love me some Headhunters 👍👍
💖 this version got me listening to them...LOVE THEM
The Headhunters really got shafted by radio. Same problem as the Georgia Satellites: too country for rock stations, too rock for country stations.
Lonnie Mack wrote a song exactly about that
They are one of the best live bands you’ll ever see 😎❤️🎶🎸🎙️🥁
Great point
Love the FFA jacket (Future Farmers of America)
Music is music that’s how you listen to btw great song my all time favorite
These guys sound just as amazing today as they did back then!
These guys are the best man that drummer he can play real good I remember when I was a kid and seen them play at the Missouri State Fair at the Budweiser tent they are very friendly people to meet in person they are what you call real country boys they never act like no big shots they're normal down to earth people it would be real neat to meet them in person again
Punctuation, bro.
Right on Kevin!!! I'm a west central native! Awesome memories!!!!!!!! GOD is so good!!!!
@@wherearewenow4181 God is what now?
Ole Fred gets after it!!
I’ve loved the Kentucky Headhunters since, well, forever! They are still great!
Years later.... Still tuned in and Amen....
Wow, great song....Listened to these guys back in the day, they are still outstanding... Going to the spirit of The Lord, Jesus Christ....Keep on Rockin!!!!
Hello, how are you doing my friend?
That's a fun song with zero link to religion. Ask Norman.
I've talked to Norman about this song when I covered it.... it's actually making FUN of idiot fundamentalist evangelists. It's kinda like people who think Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" is a patriotic anthem instead of the anti-war song it actually is....
Thanks for that Gary.
I'm not a Bruce follower but I'll look into the lyrics of 'Born in the USA'
Thank you Jefferey.
Much appreciated 👍
I lost my lily sis years back and this is her song she love this this song I miss her very much
I lost my sister also thank you
We played it at my little brother's funeral. Has a special place in my heart forever.
I hope you get all the attention you are begging for. Blessed who art tho soul.
one of the best things about this video is that people are actually reacting to the music and each other because they're not on their phones thinking about their next post
Take an obscure song from a one-hit-wonder, wait 30+ years for the right band to come along and perform it in a coliseum and you have rock magic! The Headhunters sound great like this song was written for them!
That one verse change is awesome!
Amen! ✝
how is spirit in the sky an "obscure song"??
@@JLKDOOM A jewish guy wrote this song about jesus and heaven and made it a hit and then the jewish guy disappeared forever. That's how.
Love that song just what we need in today’s world
Jesus is King
I hope I make it to the spirit in the sky with my Lord Jesus .
Me to me to ill see u there im saved by him
You will! And we will get to sing this song with everyone!
Just keep Jesus in your headlights he will guide you home! keep him first in all facets of your life! I have no doubt yourself and I will share some dialogue concerning this moment far into the future when we are reunited in the Kingdom of the Lord! I definitely look forward to meeting you there John for our conversation, "always give all praise to Lord Jesus!"
This is a great song,no matter who covers it. Still,Norman Greenbaum's original version is the best.
Shiloh Kleinschmit hi hows it going there
Imfrom nebraska
I like these songs from all time
Shiloh Kleinschmit I disagree. Norman Greenbaums version has always been scripurally incorrect, when Norman states" he is not a sinner," "I never sin". Headhunters corrected it accurately, stating that he is a sinner & he has sinned, but, has a friend in Jesus. And the guitar playing is phenomenal, compared to the original. Any, for what it's worth; That's what I think. Shalom
Shiloh Kleinschmit well said brother
I like that they changed the line "I've never sinned" to "yes I'm a sinner". Greenbaum has said he messed up on this line however this is a wonderful song.
Never knew Greenbaum felt that way. Cool to know. And yes, I like (and agree with) the correction.
I've tried to contact Greenbaum but he didn't acknowledge. This song was playing at a high school dance when someone walked up to my friend and told him his sister was just in a train/car accident and didn't make it.
I've talked to Norman about this song when I covered it.... it's actually making FUN of idiot fundamentalist evangelists. It's kinda like people who think Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" is a patriotic anthem instead of the anti-war song it actually is....
@@garystackhouse5787 That's quite funny but it's very deep and open to misinterpretation. Good to think about that as a meaning but he is reported as having said he got it wrong, maybe he got it the way he wanted but most of us don't get it.
Keeping it real
This Kentucky Woman feels this song in her Soul💖🐎You guys are Great!!!
What a beautiful song ! PRAISE JESUS NAME!
They did a really good job singing this. Good remake. One of my favorite when I was young.
Great song ! Great performance! May the spirit be with you always !!!!!!!!!

Aman too!!
Peace be with you !
Always LOVED these guys. miss them. No one sounded like them.
God let Norman in just for written this song. Thanks Norm
Sorry Norman oops great song
Just imagine how LEGENDARY that guitarist felt when he started the rift and everyone started screaming
I thought the same thing
That guitarist is Greg Martin and he is one of the best unknown players in the country. Listen to Taildragger or Rufus Huff and hear his licks....
Sad but true, however the people in the know obviously rate him as one of the best as Gibson did a Collector's Choice Custom Shop les paul based on Greg Martin's 1958 Burst! Greg Marin can absolutely jam!
He didn’t get the riff exactly right - close but no cigar.
@@chadkincham this is Greg, you are 100% correct. I Intentionally didn’t play Norman’s intro or solo out of respect, and trying to bring a little of own thing to the song. Norman says our version is his favorite cover. How about you?
Now go to your room, work up the intro like Norman, then teach it to me. I still won’t do it that.way live. ;-)
Finally a tribute to a great song.
I definitely loved this song as a little boy, and I still like it now! it's really a good song! It'll definitely continue to stand the test of time! the good ones like this always do! And God bless our Jewish friend who wrote and sang such a great hit! it really holds a lot of meaning for a great many of us! The great [Norman Greenbaum] it's such a blessing to watch somebody really enjoying performing their craft!!!
About 5-6 years ago my mom past away from cancer. And she was always singing these songs but about meeting my grandfather. Grandmother and uncle in the sky. Thanks mom for sharing all the great music. 🥰
Just saw them tonight in rural Kentucky and they ROCKED! They did this song and it was FANTASTIC! There were 4 other bands on the bill and the KY Headhunters ABSOLUTELY BLEW THEM ALL OFF THE STAGE! Great, fabulous, fantastic, unbelievable! One of the best Live Bands EVER! Love those guys. Some of them have been playing together for 41 years and it showed. Tight and Right!
I've loved em since the first time I heard them. Their music is just that dam good. Electric, great pickin, and their shows are the best.
Pike county hill folk here and where did u see them at?
I attended the 2003 farmaid concert. By far the best show I have ever seen!
Norman Greenbaum's, Spirit In The Sky spent 15 weeks on the charts, topping out at #3 in April of 1970. It has since been used in over 60 commercials and 30 movies including, Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. Mr. Greenbaum is now 77 years young and still rockin' while laughing all the way to the bank!
Hal Eisenberg : I know, right? A Jew writes a song about Jesus, and the rest is history...got to love it.
@@sauljewhebrewberg3147a Jew writing a song about another Jew! 😂
Radio didn't know where to truly put this band. I love bands like that. The drummer has the best sideburns in history btw.
I haven't heard these guys in years.Glad I gave this a view!
I just found this rendition of one of my all time fave "old school" tunes!! They rocked it & made it there own! Powerful & perfect for "FarmAid" benefit...🌟🔥💥
Friday night dances at high school, was such a good time in my life. I am 71 (yes) I still remember the words to this song.
Greg Martin was rockin the whole place with that pure badass guitar performance, I wish I could play like that, and Fred Young with sweat flying from his chops beating the drums to death, and Ricky Lee Phelps vocals were outstanding and him throwing and sprinkling holy water on everybody and taking video of the crowd was so cool, as well as his guitar encouragement of Greg and giving him the the slide to use on his guitar, and Ricky's brother Doug on his guitar was awesome, as well as his hopeful speech about farming before the performance started, and I absolutely loved drummer Fred Young's brother Richard Young telling everybody "alright people lets take it to heaven", and the the crowd absolutely loving it, and dancing and hitting balloons in the air like volleyballs, this was such an amazing and energetic performance, I wish I could have been there, I come back and watch this video often, because I love it so much, everything about it was just so cool.
Second best version I've heard. Can't beat the original- but it's good to hear this again. This is the southern rock I grew up on
Such a underrated band for their time. When they came out with the first album it was amazing. oh lonesome me will always be one my favorite songs
Yes, I have sinned... but I got a friend in Jesus... Amen!
Great cover of Norman Greenbaums hit.
Loved the Head Hunters always wanted to hear more.

@@paulinechapman9319 Billboard ranked the record the #22 song of 1970. It also climbed to #1 on the UK, Australian and Canadian charts in 1970. Rolling Stone ranked "Spirit in the Sky" #333 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time..( I don't know the year RS. did its ranking...I wonder if Billboard does a ranking of songs)
This is the song I'm going to have played at my funeral...or when I'm in the toaster ...and placing what's left of me and Juan Valdez coffee can...oh and speading them...from here to Timbuktu.. I'll be a world Traveler..all over the place.
We need the Kentucky Headhunters back. Their music was great. Saw them in concert twice, was well worth the money
They are still touring. And recording.
Went to a farmaid concert in 2003 or 2004. Still one of my favorite comcert experiences.
Can't remember the year,in the 90's, was at a Petro truck stop in Va. Blizzard hit & everyone was snowed in. Kentucky Head Hunters were there, too. Talked to the drummer,he was playing pinball machine, cool guy!
We really do have to have a saviour named Jesus to get to Heaven, this song convicted me, when I was drugging and I repented soon after, over it....
As a farmers second in charge I know what it takes to grow food and animals if we don’t have more youth going into farming and ranching this country is going to starve to death please encourage farming and ranching
Kenticky headhunters rocked the house on this night not only can they rock there own jams but they tear up a classic tooo
Great group great music very underrated
One of the best bands ever. Incredible
Lots of talent in this band for sure, great cover, glad I stumbled on this video, the best I’ve heard.
Saw this exact performance in person. The video does it no justice!
Hello Mari
Great cover of Greenbaum’s classic ... and the guitarist plays a mean slide!
Love this band - greetings from the country music capital of the Philippines, Baguio City.
that was mighty fine guitar playing
A senior & feeling down due unpleasant side affects of a Rx correctly taking (thankfully only for 5 days & on day 4) & the original song played on the local classic rock radio station I love...I recognized the song immediately & felt my spirits start to lift. Music is great therapy & this song should be a must.
Norman Greenbaum would give approval.
Confederate railroad racial. Headhunters are not racial profiling?
Greatest show I ever saw! Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga TN. Them boys came to put on a show!!!
Loved when he filmed the crowd with an old video camera - so piquant!

For those of you that do not know ...
The statement that he says in the beginning
" I believe in the future of farming with the faith born not of words but of deeds"
is the opening sentance to the FFA
Creed..The Ag boys from school will know this...however some of yall may wonder where he got that from.
Now you know!

Awesome video and the lyrics change was phenomenal!! Love this!!
Right on All have sinned But we have a friend in JESUS! 🙏

I love this band! So underrated!
Thank y’all So Much! I needed this.

Just noticed the lead singer is wearing an FFA jacket, would like to know how he got it, I know how I got mine, FFA was a wonderful program and if it still exists, I support you 100%.
I think they we all in FFA . They began with the 1st paragraph of the creed. FFA most definitely still exist. I was an Ag Techer /FFA advisor for 37;years and now am state Staff.
I got my dad's gold coin from the 70s of Ffa convention in Kansas good stuff
He begins by repeating the FFA creed so I’m assuming he was a member. As was I ❤️
It still exists, I'm a member of the odessa FFA currently
Either Way ... JESUS
It's been quite a few years since I heard this cover. Love it!!!
I got a chance to meet them back in 2005. They're really cool and really down to earth people. Damn great band.
+ThatOther Guy That's awesome. I'd love to see them again.
I went to school with them Glasgow ky,
Yes they r very good musicians. 👍👍👍👍
I fully agree with Rusty M. Talent like this just isn't sought out or promoted.
Play on Headhunters!
The issue has always been that they are too rocking for country music promoters and too country for rock and roll, but they have a good following and have released over a dozen albums.
Famers are the back bone ofthis country god bless dc
Graduated high school in 1977 in a small farming town. Sitting here now thinking "where have I heard that opening before?" Then it hit me: The FFA Creed. I believe in the future of farming, of a faith born not of words, but of deeds........Take that, dementia.
A great cover of a great song by a great band!
This the only cover of this tune I have ever heard and a fine one it is !!!!!
Of all the covers of songs this cover is absolutely stunning & fantastic Rock On KHH
Got the lyrics right.
"I'm a sinner. Ive sined i got a friend in Jesus! Yes! Amen! Thank you Jesus!!
this is one of those rare songs just cant be covered bravo mr greenbaum
This version is more accurate than the original we all sin but through the blood of Jesus Christ we have forgiveness and eternal life
One of the greatest songs ever created. On a side note the dude in the bibs looks just like my kids elementary school janitor.
