I know that you posted this a while ago, but I have to say, I’m glad I archived it because my local home brew shop just closed and I need to create my own little home brew shop of my own. Thank you for all the great tips and I can’t wait for your next video to post!🍻
I love brewing but I am the world's worst organizer. Any tip to keep things well kept is very much appreciated. I took the advice from one of your previous videos and am now storing all of my brewing salt in dollar tree containers. My wife went along for the ride and now we have a shelf of brewing salts and wine making material organized and labeled. Thanks!
I end up having too many 6 gallon buckets every fall from fresh CA grape juice purchases. Just bought 3 gamma lids to repurpose those buckets and make them grain storage. Perfect fit.
Vital vaults for sacks of grain and Mason jars for brewing salts. I use the vacuum attachment on the jar for calcium chloride. I also store my acids inside Mason jars as well.
Nice video. One thing you didn’t mention was temperature control. I live in Florida and store everything in my garage and in the summer it gets very hot and humid. Not sure how long the grains would keep in those conditions. I do use the vittle vaults and store my premade recipes in them for safe keeping. I usually buy 2-4 recipes from my LHBS at a time since it’s over an hour from my house.
Very cool and I have almost the exact same setup. One thing i did for the Dollar Tree containers was cut the label off the bag of specialty grain and tape it to the front of the container.
I like these videos. I am not in a place where I can or need to buy bulk grains yet, my LHBS has almost no overhead so he is dirt cheap, and I don't have the space for bulk storage right now, But I will be referring to this video again in the future when I have to move and have the space I want to brew in. Great video Brian. Thanks.
That's a sweet deal!! Be careful in the dollar tree!! You can spend lots of dollars...lol make sure you grab a cart.. you look really funny trying to carry a bunch of round containers.. ask me how I know!! Lol 👍🍻
I use the 30 litre bucket fermenters for the bulk grain. They can hold roughly 20kg of grain. The extra 5kg of the bag gets used in the first couple of brews. I store the speciality grains in kitchen food containers. Just for reference a 1.5 litre container can easily fit 1kg of grain.
Excellent Job. I use the same big Vittles Vault containers and some of their smaller versions. I use to use containers from the dollar store but the ones I had didn't seal as well so I ended up buying the 32 oz Plastic Deli Containers from Amazon which is even cheaper compared to the dollar store and they can hold about 1 lb of adjunct grains plus they seal amazingly well. The 8 and 12 oz versions are good for other things like brewing salts and such. Keep up the great work.
Brian, thanks for the video. I recently bought a grain mill from Monster Mills and now I’m into building up my grain stores. I was given a 50 lb bag of 2 row as a bday present so I had to make the leap. Theres a Dollar Tree close by, so I’ll check out the containers. I store the 50 lb bag in the grey upright screw top container from the pet store similar to what you show in the video. Happy Brewing! I watch your channel frequently.
As usual a very factual well presented and informative video Brian. These subject type of video’s are very useful and important to all new & old brewing hands. Please continue to make these types of video’s this is what makes good beer brewers into great beer brewers!
Great tip on the Dollar Tree for containers. I do use the food grade buckets with gamma lids. However I also use food grade liners, that I can use to minimize head space over the grain. I don't brew as often as I'd like.
Thanks for sharing your tips. I have a dollar tree store not to far away. Never thought about going there to get containers until you mentioned it. I store grains and adjuncts in cardboard boxes right now stored on shelves. Some grains in buckets. All my grains are sealed. Cheers!
Good looking out!! I love the selection they have.. I've got some for all my triclamp stuff. Fittings, washers, hose clamps, etc. Can't beat the price!
You must be reading people's minds. I was thinking about how I can store larger quantities of brewing salts. You must have the pulse on the brewer's collective unconsciousness :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom!
Love the video! I have a bunch of those same exact Dollar Tree containers for specialty and adjunct grains and I wondered if anyone else was using them as well. They work great! My base malts are the same setup minus the Vittles Vaults, I just use 5 gallon buckets with Gamma lids. I haven't seen those smaller brewing salts containers at the Dollar Tree - for salts I've been using mason jars or re-purposed Skippy peanut butter jars. I've been using my vacuum sealer (originally purchased for BBQ leftovers) for hops for years, always re-packaging to smaller amounts from 1lb bags, but I never thought to make pre-packaged multi-hop additions for certain recipes - brilliant idea! Love these types of tips & tricks videos, keep it up!
Great video! I do a lot of the same. I have some buckets with gamma lids and vittle vaults. I do vacuum seal my specialty grains too. I find they keep forever and take up less space in the pet food buckets that way. I like having ingredients on hand so I can build a recipe and brew without a trip to the Homebrew store.
Great video! Ever since I started brewing AG I have always bought in bulk and I just stored everything in 5 gallon icing buckets I got at the bakery at my local grocery store. I love to see how other home brewers do things because we all have different needs we all come up with different ideas. I always buy my specialty grains in no less than 5lb bags, I love having grains on hand for that spur of the moment brew. Cheers!
Excellent and timely content, about to start my AG journey and have been looking at grain storage options. The vittles look like the way to go for large grain sacks but they’re hard to get ahold off in Australia without paying big bucks... Happy brewing!
For some reason, I never pictured the scale of the 60lb Vittle Vault. I think I might have to pick a few up now for the open bags of grain. Lots of great info! Cheers!
A source for 5 gallon buckets for free or very little charge is a Little Caesars Pizza. We use a release oil in our pans that comes in food grade buckets. If you ask the owner or manager of the store, I would be willing to bet they'd be happy to give them to you.
Excellent video and perfect timing for where I am at. I need to get my salts into a more secure container as I live in a very humid environment. Was also looking at how much cheaper hops are by bulk just today. Going to move on some of those containers and a vacuum sealer.
Yup, I'm very happy with my vacuum sealer. Especially for hops. I harvested and dried a bunch a week ago and after sealing got it all nice and compacted.
Great content, thank you. I would love to see a video of what (based on your experience) would be a general recommendation of top base malts and adjunct grains to stock up in (ie the ones that are used in over half the recipes out there). Thanks again!.
Great content. Been thinking about this same topic lately. I like these sorts of videos more than some of the equipment reviews; once I've invested in hardware, equipment reviews aren't so useful. Along those lines, videos detailing techniques are also the ones I see as most useful, even though they may require some ancillary hardware.
Damn! I have the exact same setup and it works like a charm. I would recommend every homebrewer to take the time to build something similar. It really satisfying to have a shelf well organized with your grains. Another tip … if you use Brewfather, the inventory capability is also a nice way to keep track of all the grains and hops on your shelf.
I really enjoyed this information. Keep it coming. I would love to see a follow up video about grains, adjuncts, and other stuff to always keep on hand. Thank you
Yeah I was thinking about doing some research on some popular recipes in the brewfather library and try to break down what you should have in stock depending on what type of beer is you Brew.
Thank you. I've been looking those plastic containers for months. Finally found them this morning. But the Dollar Tree Store changed name. Its now the $1.25 store 😁. Gotta love inflation.. Im starting to create a little homebrew shop for my use. I just need to figure out the must have grains to have on hand.
I am always looking for storing stuff, grain, hops, yeast & oranges peels and so on. Currently I'm using old fermentation bucket with a screw lid for the grains. And for the rest I am using smaller container from IKEA. Keep the video coming, Great work👍
I have a large plastic fermenter, it's one of those 50 liter fermenting tuns with a green screw lid. I will dump my 25KG pale ale base grain at the bottom and stack all my smaller 1kg bags of grain on top of them. All in one bin, almost no waste of space.
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Thanks! I'm brewing in a shed in my yard thats also the tool shed, bicycle shed, general storage shed and it has my motorcycle in it. So I'm pretty much an appartment brewer but then on ground floor, organization is key and space comes at a premium. One day I dream of having a brewery like yours. :)
Good timing on this video… I have three huge bags of grain that I keep having to move around. Those vittle vaults look perfect. I do similar for my adjuncts - local club often does group buys, so added bulk discounts while still getting smaller amounts.
At $37 the vittle vaults are really cheaper than buying two gamma lids and two buckets. And you can store them all in the same place!! That was one of the best storage investments I've ever made! 👍🍻
Thanks Brian, great video. Been starting to buy my own grains in bulk. Like the gama lids you have. Also need to get some smaller containers for my speciality grains. Only buy the 50 lbs for base malt. Also use a vacuum sealer to package my homegrown hops! Cheers 🍻
Everyone should have a vacuum sealer! I used to buy grain in bulk and store it in the buckets with the black lids but my local homebrew shop got an ss mill. Now I would rather pay extra for the grain to get a better crush and save space in the brewery.
Love your videos, I have learned most of my brewing lessons from you. I would love a video on buying base gains in balk. Thank you for your videos please keep them coming.
Great content Brian! I've been thinking about how to store all my leftover 50lb and other buys. Gonna get me some vittles and head to dollar tree. Thanks!
I do exactly the same thing you showed in your video. I am 250 miles from the nearest homebrew shop so I definitely buy in bulk. I have two vittles vaults for bags of pale malt and pils. Gama lids on six 5-gallon buckets for all of my other malts. I am still looking for a solution for keeping DME so that it doesn't get sticky.

I like the vital vaults just a bit pricey. I use the lids you mentioned in the video and 5 gallon food safe buckets. Found the lids at Home Depot and the buckets at Walmart for about half the price Home Depot wanted for the same buckets.
I use the Vittle Vaults for my base grains and and generally keep the specialty grains in the bags they come in. But you've give me some things to think about. The only thing I typically vacuum seal were hops, but I think I'll start packaging the specialty grains in smaller containers
I enjoyed the content. I find it is hard to balance the "save money and buy in bulk + have on hand if needed" aspect versus still having 3 lbs of Brown Malt 2 years later side! I see a label maker and a trip to the dollar store in my near future.
Enjoyed this for sure! I've been looking for better storage solutions. Unfortunately I don't have a LHBS so I have to order online and I always buy extra to reduce the number of orders in the future.
I got to look into this. So I don’t have grains for bad I have to use pound or half pound specialty grains when I brew so I don’t have grains go bad or go to waste.
i have a drawer in my tool box dedicated to misc homebrew fittings and so forth. I need to get bulk grains going to.. how do you determine what specialty grains you keep on hand
It kind of depends on what you brew really. Since doing this video I've been thinking about doing a video on what specialty grains would be the best to have in bulk on hand that would cover the most recipes styles.. if you brew a lot of stouts porters or dark beers then you obviously want to have caramel Crystal and roasted malts. If you brew a lot of New England ipas you probably want flaked oats, flaked barley, flaked wheat, carapils..
Hey Bryan, this is J from Medellin Colombia. thanks a lot for you awesome videos and tips. Also beginning my journey into AG @ home! Any tips for handling and storing yeasts?
These are the best videos. I don’t know anyone who brews. I’m visual learner so I learn everything on RUclips on channels like yours.

As long as you use it within six months you should be ok
I noticed your shirt and I have never heard of Hartland Malting, I live like 30 minutes from Bascom!

What about storage temperature though? I would have to store the grains in my garage, which can reach 100F in Summer.
Yeah I'm blessed with a basement..I forget about those that don't have them sometimes...👍🍻
i have a drawer in my tool box dedicated to misc homebrew fittings and so forth.
