    Emendemus in melius quae ignoranter peccavimus;
    ne subito praeoccupati die mortis,
    quaeramus spatium poenitentiae,
    et invenire non possimus.
    Attende, Domine, et miserere;
    quia peccavimus tibi.
    Adjuva nos, Deus salutaris noster,
    et propter honorem nominis tui libera nos.
    - - - -
    Let us amend for the better in those things in which we have sinned through ignorance;
    lest suddenly overtaken by the day of death,
    we seek space for repentance,
    Hearken, O Lord, and have mercy:
    for we have sinned against thee.
    Help us, O God of our salvation,
    and for the honour of thy name deliver us.
    and are not able to find it.

    William Byrds Cantiones Sacrae 1575 - the greatest motets which were ever composed on this planet ... Thank you for the wonderful recording
    with the outstanding Deller Consort (Dir. Mark Deller)

    Thank You for this! Just like one of my fellow listeners said it, and right on the money... This kind of music can't be beat; that it is without peer....

    Lovely! This makes my ash wednesday.
    But I should add that your translation is slightly jumbled
    "and are not able to find it" should go after "we seek space for repentance" - as in, lest suddenly we are overtaken by the day of death, and we look for the space for penitence but we are not able to find it"
