  • China has always been considered a country that controls citizens and every step taken by citizens.
As a foreigner living in China and experiencing various locations from Shanghai to Shenzhen through Guangzhou and Hunan, i had to share my personal views about freedom, freedom not just in China but freedom in the USA, UK, Africa, alongside other countries.
Just keep an open mind while watching. ;)
    enjoy!

What the western countries think about lifting poverty in China is a fluke and just about fulfilling the minimum income requirement… that’s a huge misconception. Having lived in China for over 35 years and seen the progress, the China government investments in infrastructure and other projects that will take a lifetime to get back their investment but again the government is willing to invest so the people of China can benefit from it and have better lives. Most of these investments are sustainable and are being used by the people daily… So, poverty alleviation is not just a one year thing… if you look at the plans of China, they have a 5, 10, and 100 year plans… and they are able to achieve them in less time than the plan… If the government said they will do it, it will be done. If the west put their money for the people instead of wars, people and the world will be at peace and prosperity.

The most tragic thing is that they cannot face their own shortcomings and learn from them. West used wars, conquest and colonialization to develop their economies. Chinese economy, however, needs stability and peace. The Chinese model will likely not work in the west. And it is always about creating a common enemy. This is why western media 24/7 say bad things about China as if nothing can go right in China. The west did similar strategy in the Middle East, Africa and Soviet Union. The goal was to break them into smaller countries and then make them fight each other with endless wars so US can sell their weapons and control them by offering protection and security. At the same time, spread rumors about this and that so they constantly hate each other.
This is the same US politics work in America. You can have a mixed race marriage but you can't have a mixed political marriage. Democrats have been brainwashed Republicans are bad and vice versa.

There is no such thing as one universal “freedom”. I’m free to own a gun in US, I can carry the gun anywhere in some states, I can smoke happy grass in California but not in all the states and I can’t do any of these in Japan. So does Japan doesn’t have freedom, no crewing gum in Singapore is no freedom or not? LGBTQ is illegal in muslin countries and is pride in some US states. Each nation is entitled to regulate “freedom” their own way, if the citizens don’t agree, they can revolve; China does it every few hundred years for a very very long time. US criticizes China being communist no democracy which is bad and yet befriend with communist no democracy Vietnam and this is good. So, it’s all about self interest politics, not ideology.

I my honest opinion China is a much more free country than my home country of Canada. Some of the so-called freedoms people assume we have in Canada are false. In Canada, we have "Free" health care. Though in fact, if you look closely at your tax returns, it is by no means free. For my last 5 years living in Canada I needed surgery. But I could not haver the surgery without a doctors referral. But I tried, with government programs even, to simply find a family doctor for 5 years, without luck. I could not even get a health check without paying over $1000 to a private clinic. I was in dire straights... The "Free" healthcare I was actually paying for, was not accesible to me or my family. So we returned to China. Upon applying for my visa here, I was told I need a full and comprehensive medical health check. So I went to thehospital and was given a full health screening from head to toe!! On The Spot!!! Same DAY!!! Something I had begged for in Canada for years!!! And even though a foreigner, because I have a local wife, it cost me nothing!! Even without her it would have cost me $20-$30 for same day , comprehensive service. In Western cultures we are indoctrinated from childhood to believe we are free and other countries are terrible and restrictive. SO sad so many people never make it out of their home countires to find the truth. Thank you as always my friend for sharing this video!!

In all the countries where the healthcare is free, if it is a urgent surgery, you can go to a hospital passing through the first aid unit even if you haven't the local citizenship.
If the surgery is not urgent, NHS gives you the list of family doctors available you can be registered with, if you have the citizenship or you have a temporary or permanent permit.
If you haven't any permit, the NHS gives you a list of doctors where you can go, without the need to be registered.

Thank you Willene for painting a true picture of China. I came across your channel several weeks ago and have been following. It is important to get the story from someone that’s on the ground. When you mentioned theft in China, I have a story. My friend lives in Dongguan and he bikes a lot. There was one time he left his bike outside a noodle shop and when he finished his noodle, his bike disappeared. He asked the owner, whom he knew if he had seen anyone taking it. The owner said no but he would put a notice outside his shop saying that if the bike is not returned in 3 days, it will be reported to the police. Sure enough, the bike reappeared. I dare say this will not happen in most parts of the world. The existence of cameras everywhere may make some uncomfortable as if they are being watched all the time. But if you are a law abiding citizen, they are there to keep you safe. My 2 cents…

Cameras everywhere is a slippery slope. How can you not see that? China would be just as safe if they got rid of over 95% of them. Obviously it’s about control. They have no accountability. No checks and balances . Of course they are obsessed with control. Most of the sheep love it though, as long as the freebies keep coming in. If thousands were slaughtered by the government, I really believe most Chinese wouldn’t care , as long as they are ok. Bow to your masters. Your God!

Fact is China has only been really developing since the late 80s. It took 40 years to get where they are today. How many years has the US been developing? Did it get to where it is today 40 or 80 years after the country was formed? I don’t believe so. It would be unfair to judge china with your standards since you have more than a couple of hundred extra years of head start. Also who’s to say that your standards fits for everyone else in the world? The simple fact is that while China is trying to work with other countries to win-win deals, to help building other countries infrastructures, the US is trying to build more military bases and starting wars in other countries. Who’s the real threat to world peace?

100% agree with what you say in this video. In my lifetime of 78 years I have watched western governments becoming more and more obsessed with the sometimes spurious rights of the individual and less and less concerned with the individual's responsibilities. Basic human rights are important. But, as @dharmadit3482 comments below "If you want to receive, you must give first, that is ultimate wisdom - Lao Tzu". This western preoccupation with providing criminals and social miscreants with perceived rights has led to enormous sums of money being spent to support these people's rights while at the same time ignoring the basic human rights of large parts of the population. No judgement is made as to who is more deserving of support. Starving, homeless people are left to rot while billions is spent to safeguard the sometimes spurious rights of criminals and other miscreants. This has led to a gradual erosion of the social structure. Ordinary law abiding people perceive that there is no gain in being a responsible member of society therefore more and more of them just give up. This appears to be especially true in the USA.

Let me try to explain the problem you mentioned in this video.
Fight on street is really rare in China, as the winner of the fight, you might get some legal problems and some accuses by the people who get injuried in fight. And as the loser of the fight, you spend some days in hospital and i believe no one like to live in hospital. Just like a cool guy comment in Chinese"打赢进法院,打输进医院" 🤣
The other reason is that about 10 or 15 years ago, there are some people especially old ones who pretended got hurt by others on street when they try to help them, and that make people kind of "selfish", you can search the word" 碰瓷" to learn more about this. This usually happens when a young man trying to help an elder one to get through the street or just hold the elder one, then the old people will say that this young man who is innocent hurt him as these days China didn't get so many cameras like you talked about.
Hope my words help you understand , and really appreacited that you speak the truth about China

Freedom ultimately means you can do whatever you want, whenever you want without any hindrances. This is simply not possible as this would mean nothing exists except yourself because everything can be a hindrance. So, what you do and when you do it, has to be managed, so others can do as much as you can do. Most of this is just important if there is an in-/direct interaction between people otherwise why should it matter what someone does by himself?

Thanks for another good video. Your last question is actually very relevant and it is a cultural belief which has its pros and cons. In the Western world, going in between a conflict is seen as bravery but many people also either get hurt or killed doing so. Hence in the Chinese culture, parents especially mothers always remind the kids and husbands "don't try to be a hero", which basically means I want you to keep walking and come home for dinner lol. To some it may look like cowardice, but the Chinese people actually place a lot of demand and trust on its government to protect them in such situations. That is why they do not mind all the cameras and strict laws because they have no problems abiding to laws that will keep them safe. Police in China are respected with high regards. You will often see in small disagreements which they will suggest to call the police to settle the small dispute and the police's decision will be respected. The whole idea is, Mind your own business and let the authorities do their nominated job, go home safely to your family for dinner, work hard again the next day.

I am a Singaporean Chinese. I am bilingual in both English & Chinese at school & is exposed to both Western & Chinese values growing up. Personally to me, freedom must come with a social responsibility. It shouldn't be at an expense of others as it will deprive others of their freedom. e.g. if I smoke or get drunk in a playground full of children because of my freedom, is it right to deprive these children of their rights to play in a safe environment. Is it right to shout racial vulgarities at others because it is freedom of speech & expression? BTW, I was a victim of such racial abuse when I was holidaying in Melbourne Australia. Sometimes people have to weigh the scale of individual freedom & their social responsibility since we are all living with other individuals in a community.

15:18 ahh ok, I don’t currently live in China but I can tell you what I know! This is because of strict laws regarding public conflict. From what my relatives in China have informed me, the law is that if the situation involves two people using violence, it is a fight. And if a third person joins in, this is now a gang and a crime. Everyone involved will face deep consequences, including possibly weeks in prison. People don’t want to get into that, so it probably explains why you witnessed no one intervening in a two person conflict. The result of this law is a safer and low crime environment that we can experience, and the degree of this change is unbelievable. My mother whom was raised in Harbin, China, told me that violent fights were a common sight, in the streets or neighbourhood. People even fought with knives, leading to bloody scenes. But that was back then. In the recent years we visited Harbin, and my mother was left in utter shock. She was out of the country for what-20 years? and the change was clearly visible. What we experienced in our weeks there was completely the opposite of what my mother had expected. People were kind, helpful, even overly welcoming (this is actually what dongbei people are known for now, lol) and no fights at all. I hope this answers your question.

As a Chinese, I want to clarify a facts about China that foreigners see as controversial.
It is true that there are few homeless people on the streets while China has a such high level of house prices? I would say it's true. Firstly, lots of Chinese youngsters who can't afford to purchase a house for a short time, are living with their parents and other family members. That comes out extremely natural to individuals in this country since they cherish the idea of a large family and feel obligated to assist any family members who are in need. Secondly, There is always the option for someone to return to their "laojia," which is Chinese for "hometown," if they are truly in a position where they can no longer make ends meet in those high-cost, one-tier cities. 99% of China's population was made up of peasants living in rural areas 70 years ago. Due to the expanding economy, a lot of individuals relocate to those megacities from their hometowns in search of better prospects and a higher quality of life. They still own their houses in the countryside. So if you can't bear the fast-paced city life anymore, you can just simply buy a train ticket to go back to your hometown, take a long break with your family in the countryside, and live a slower pace of life. And then, return to the cities to continue pursuing their big city dream without giving up, or just accept everything and enjoy a slower pace of life.

    你把政治自由和生活自由弄混了。中国缺的是政治自由,比如没有多党竞选,保障不了言论自由,缺乏监督,所以导致政治腐败,导致人祸。中国是一个生活上很自由,但政治上不自由的国家。

I'm glad you asked the question regarding "why do people not intervene", as a Chinese person who came to North America as a child, this is one of the things that I have always found hard to get used to even after all those years. The answer comes in three interconnected parts:
    1) There is no need to intervene to "save a life" --- First of all, it is very common and even encouraged to argue and debate due to fundamentals of Chinese philosophy. If you don't argue, how do you get to the truth or an agreement? You'd just back down before it escalates, and NEVER actually need to be pushed to the point of self-evaluation OR re-confirm your own thinking through a battle against counter-arguments. How would you learn then? How would the understanding get deeper between people? When you are arguing, you are actually just passionately discussing issues. You both are still interested in each others' inputs. If you truly do not care about someone, you can simply ignore that person. Arguing is effort on your part too, and you'd proceed to argue because this person is worth it, you DESIRE a deeper understanding and agreement with him/her. That's definitely not a bad thing at all.
    2) At the same time, it is EXTREMELY rare in China for arguments to turn into anything physical. I noticed this instantly when I moved to the West as a child: It was quite shocking to me how conflicts in the West so often escalates into dangerous physical fights. In China, arguing and physical fights are completely separate things, NOBODY expects a common heated argument to turn physical. IF it does, police and security guards and even people on the street will all be shocked and startled, then they will all jump in and intervene, the law itself is also very tough for anything physical. In summary, "Intellectual Dispute" is perfectly fine and even encouraged throughout Chinese history, it is built INTO the very fundamentals of Chinese philosophy. But "Physical Dispute" is shocking and will be met with some of the highest standards of punishments. It's something that most people from the rest of the world are not aware of, and Chinese people themselves have no idea that the rest of the world does not exactly behave this way.
    3) You must have heard of the "none-interference policy" that China has consistently held for international affairs for many decades now. This is not just a random policy that China has, it is very cultural, it seeps through thousands of years of history AND it is echoed in every single person. There is an ancient saying in China --- "Every household/private affair has a unique situation beyond your limited understanding, don't butt in like a presumptuous jerk". This is also the reason that throughout all these thousands of years, the Imperial government has never put any emphasis on what people do "behind closed doors" --- You deal with it yourself, the government will only step in when it comes to public/common areas, because that is what a "government" is, regardless of political structure. If you butt into arguments (as mentioned above, arguments are not even bad), 99.9% of the time both people in the argument will immediately switch to the same team, they will be shocked and offended that you actually think you can butt in, then they will accuse you in rage of butting into a situation that you know very little about AND have simply not earned your trust/privilege to even be a participant of. So this ultimately ties into the same points as above --- No one knows the truth. No one knows what's best for others. No one is "better" than others such that they can just tell people what they should do. Conflicts happen, and they will always keep happening, but it is up to those sides to resolve it together. It is pure hubris for others to think that somehow "they have a better plan" when they are not even directly involved.

About that last question in your video. My answer is, to be safe. If two people are just hitting with their fists, it's hard to beat someone to death, so you don't need to intervene. If one side is armed with a knife, brick, or other weapon, there is even less need for your intervention because you could get hurt. It's like when a flight attendant asks an adult to put an oxygen mask on themselves in a dangerous situation before putting it on a child. Only the living can do more.

To me, THE most important freedom is the freedom of choice. People who having this freedom could select to live or left. That is the most important freedom. Other freedom such as religion, work, neighbor, education etc are also important but not as important as the freedom of leave/stay. The West has this freedom and the Chinese also has this freedom. I am a citizen of the planet as I could select to live in UK, Canada, USA, Nigeria and China. In USA, I have the freedom to vote for anyone but I could not influence the policy as both parties are crooked and no third party is allowed to challenge their monopoly. In Canada, I could vote too but I could not influence how they spend my tax which could be as high as 53% of my earning. Therefore, one man one vote is not that important to me as it won't change anything. But walking safely and freely at mid night and enjoy my life freely within the law is.
