This is not a game, this is art, legend and masterpiece ♥
It is a game
I never thought I would see anything like this footage back then when I first played Mafia (2009). The first game I beat.
I always thought it was like a forgotten jewel; never talked about; nobody knew about it.
It's nice of you to bring this information to us!
Amen to that
It was talked about when it came out but by 2009 it was 'a forgotten jewel' like you said.
Well Its czech game there are not that many czech games that blew out. I was born in 2009 and I am absolutely fascinated by these older games. It have PS2 vibes. I am from Slovakia. We are neighbours with czech rep. And I was shocked when I heard they have these kind of games. But I am a little dissapointed they don't have dub on Steam. Its not like I don't know english but Its better in original.
I like how Dan Vavra and the others are dressed in gangster attires lol.
😂 chads
That's typical czech clothing. :D
@@private_martin oh, i didn’t know about that.

Somewhere I have an old Pc Gamer magasine and the guys wear these clothes on the cover 🤣
I made an English translation of Behind the Scenes pictures notes. I'm Czech and not very fluent in English so please forgive me if I make any mistakes.
1999 (1:29):
The oldest preserved photos of the team. Everyone on them still work in the company. Though some of them for example on Hidden & Dangerous 2. The "Back to the Future"-like hairstyle gave our lead graphics designer the nickname "Emmet".
The first version of Central Island from the game. Textures alone had 200MB which is quite a lot for the whole city, compared to the resulting 18 MB. It's surprising that the game even ran on 200 MHz computers with Riva 128.
2000 (1:43):
These photos were taken in the winter, when thermometers showed the temperature slightly below zero. Half of us were sick for the next 14 days after that. But it was worth it. From left to right: Tomáš Hřebíček, Pavel Tretera, Pavel Čížek, Michal Mach, Dan Vávra, Milan Šaffek, David Šemík, Roman Hladík, Ben Záhora, Dan Doležel and Jan Žatecký.
2001 (1:53):
On Spring 2001 a presentation of games made by Take2 for European journalists was taking place in Munich. The event was held in a drained pool of a former army base, and here Mafia, HD2, Stronghold and GTA III could be seen. All the games aroused their well-deserved interest in them. Apart from a DJ, good meals and games, a journalist drunk as a Great Dane entertained the audience.
The first clash between Mafia and GTA III also took place on the presentation. We showcased Mafia in one of the pool's corners, while GTA III could be seen from the side. A comic scene preceded the presentation on the both rivals' sides. Whereas we had, much for the GTA III's programmer's amusement, to replace our graphics card maybe 5 times, and finally instead of our hyper powerful PC we used an old computer of a T2's secretary that could run the game without problems, then approximately 10 minutes before the beginning of the presentation the Rockstar representatives who showcased their game from a notebook found out that the notebook battery died, and that they left the charger far beyond the La Manche canal. In the end, everything turned out fine for us both.
E3 2001 (2:03):
On E3 2001, the biggest gaming trade show in the world, Mafia was presented in one of the Gathering of Developers' stands located on a large parking lot in front of the entrance to the exhibition. All games including Max Payne, Hidden & Dangerous 2 and Mafia were showcased in caravans. The GOD GAMES stand differed from the rest mainly by the presence of strippers, trapezes, sexy schoolgirls, free beers, and, of course, Duke Nukem.
Caravans of Mafia, HD2 (above) and Max Payne (below), including the guys from Remedy that we feel mutual respect and have sympathies with. Max Payne was just about to be released, and the Illusion Softworks' and Remedy's storytelling showed off each other well.
The Mafia caravan's interior during the Mafia presentation and the HD2 caravan.
A "student" that helped me with the presentation of Mafia was unequivocally the most beautiful girl on the GOD GAMES stand and we had great fun together. If you had to watch for three days how all the visitors annoyed her and wanted to take a photo with her, you would never dare to ask a lady for that. Though after a bottle of good Chianti it was something completely different. :)
2001 cont'd (2:13):
Guys from Pterodon wanted to try experience the war firsthand for their Vietcong game, so in Spring 2001 they staged a huge paintball battle. The opponents were developers from Mafia and HD2 teams. It wasn't the first and not even the last time we organized something like this.
Lead animator Tomáš Hřebíček.
David Šemík, 3D graphics designer of Mafia. They found him in this pose only two days after the match.
Mafia team before the action.
(2:23):
We were excited for Max Payne just like everyone else. Not only the publisher connects us with the Remedy team, also the mega long development time (although we were a bit faster), similar genre, logos and the desire for a perfect product at all costs. In case of the logos, similarity is purely coincidental.
This is what it looked like after we got our hands on Max's first copy. We sent the photo to Remedy as a congratulation for releasing the game. May 2001.
It was possible to sleep in old offices. It definitely wasn't for five stars though. Mainly because of our own "tidiness".
Jan Straka is responsible for the graphics and all weapons in the game.
Roman Hladík is the author of all characters in the game. He himself is definitely an unmissable character, so no wonder he sometimes has trouble finding an enough combortable chair.
(2:38):
This is how the advertisement for Mafia was created. I bought props and talked the security guard of our offices into taking his picture. He ate some tasty spaghetti, drank some fine wine, smoked an expensive cigar, and then looked onto the plate pretty closely.
Pepé Vašek while capturing the movements of Tommy. On the photo above the wooden car, which we had to make so we could capture entering and exiting a car, can be seen.
(2:48):
Christmas 2001. Before we drove back home to our families' Christmas trees, we celebrated. Upper row from left to right: Pavel Tretera (graphics/script), Milan Šaffek (graphics), Pavel Čížek (art director), Lukáš Kuře (producer), Dan Vávra (lead designer), Pavel Brzák (script). Lower row from left to right: Jiří Pop (AI), Dan Čapek, Martin Brandstäter (programmers) and Dan Doležel (lead programmer).
New sports car of our programmer. It's not called fanny magnet for nothing.
(2:58):
In December 2001 recording of orchestral music for the game took place. It was being recorded in the National Theatre, with a 46-piece orchestra conducted by Adam Clemens (in the middle). For me the participation and possibility to watch the Czech elite at work was a very powerful experience, especially because they worked on something for us.
Michal Chovanec - Sound Engineer of Mafia.
At the studio during the recording of the orchestra. Myself and the sound engineer Vladimír Fila and sound director Jiří Zobač. Both men contributed to the best film music ever created in Bohemia. Mr. Zobač is a legend - he has a history of collaboration with, for example, Angelo Badalamenti, and watching him at work is a real pleasure.
(3:08):
In the beginning of the year we started working on voice acting. Czech VA in collaboration with Jakub Salc came first. The photos show the actor Antonín Molčík voicing Salieri. The same day after we recorded the last part of replicas of Tommy's lines with Marek Vašut, I was on a plane to New York to record the English version. We worked there a couple of days on the final version of dialogues, then the work in the Manhattan studio (on the picture) began.
New York is a beautiful city so I took hundreds of photos we wanted to use while making the graphics for next games.
Take2 resides on Broadway, next to Little Italy, and by pure chance this beautiful Buick appeared here, and we have it in the game! Every day a well dressed man walked on the same street shouting that the aliens had already landed and they had Pilsner in a buffet behind a corner! Just like home.
I didn't really want to go to the Brooklyn Bridge, but after I got there I spent almost two hours staring at the horizon. This cheesy shot isn't from a postcard, this is what it really looked like.
2002 (3:18):
In the beginning of the year we moved to new and nicer offices. January was really rad because the development truly entered its final stage.
When 30 people work until late at night, they need a lot of pick-me-ups so they can keep in shape. Of course it isn't beneficial to drink 12 coffees and a couple of Semtexes a day. Heart attack before thirty is no joke. One of our programmers could talk all day about sudden changes of heart rate after such a deadly combination.
Gym can also keep you fit. But check every time that the cables on the machines are in good condition, otherwise you'll end up in the emergency room like Emmet.
Pavel Tretera (graphics and script). Maybe he can tell how it was with the damn casino in the game. :)
Mom and dad. Lead programmer Dan Doležel and physics programmer Václav Král. Both worked 16-hour days on much of the development, 7 days a week on things that no one else understands.
The final agony (3:28):
In the beginning of Summer, it seemed for the tenth time that the game would finally be complete. We worked day and night and at the same time we thought we'll finally finish it off today. It ended up taking almost another month. It was a very exhausting month. We usually worked more than 30 hours straight and then again after 10 hours sleep.
17.00 - chilling
20.00 - smoking a cigarette
22.00 - some rest at least for a while...
4.50 - coma
5.00 - let's go on, fixing issues in the code, waiting for a new game engine
(3:38):
Doping.
A retreat with Jiří Popper, sitting, not sleeping, programming, with his artistic creation on the monitor.
Animators Štěpán Prokop, Patrik Marek and Martin Mach finishing FMV sequences.
Animator Patrik Marek.
Animation sound engineers Petr Klimunda and Jan Absolin. Sitting and taking a nap. :)
(3:48):
Bug lists before the game's release always had a few hundred bugs that needed fixing, which caused new bugs to appear. Testers that came for each new version when everyone went to sleep tried to attract attention on a new bug list for example with this work of art.
Exemplary worker of 2001. Accomplished the plan to 210%. Credits to his work!
Tester Pepé Vašek.
Petr Vochozka could no longer look at this.
(3:58):
Finally, all that was left was recording the opening logo of the company. Tomáš Hřebíček took care of the directing and the characters of the tattoo artist and the tattooed were played by Honza Hlavatý and Lukáš Homola from Pterodon.
(4:08):
It was finally done...
You are the real MVP, thank you!
Wow, there's sooooo much beta stuff for this game. There must be a beta out there, I hope it leaks some day. It would give even more insight into the hard work that went into developing this masterpiece.
you have a higher chance of winning the lottery than having a take two leak happen to you with a game like this
Thanks Daniel for this masterpiece! Still playing it to this day!!!

Being Czech and actually drinking on 28/8/ this year to celebrate the 20 year anniversary, THIS WARMS MY HEART. And I think I speak for all of those who were so lucky to live through this game’s prime and spend their time debating what the Mafia II is “gonna” have. 🥰
This video is a compilation of Mafia 1 Beta Videos! I will add English closed captions when I have time. I know the footage looks bad but that’s because many of the videos are 240p to 480p, upscaling them actually made the quality better if you compare them with the original footage. Keep in mind these videos are from 2000-2002, that’s 20 years ago!
Greetings from Czech republic :)
No. 1 game in my personal list of the best games. Nothing has moved it from there and, probably, nothing will.
💯
Gold words

Daniel Vavra would be proud. It feels great to look back at so many classic gangster games from back in the day. Nice to see you use some of PastGaming's videos as I have too. He is an amazing channel.
Never used that channel's videos for this video. These videos are from original uploaders.
@@MafiaGameVideos Oh. This is really extensive. Its so awesome.
I have goosebumps watching this, a band of lunatics younger than I am today made one of my most favourite games. Even games of today doesn't have what Mafia had back then. Every playthrough I find something new. The remake is very bad compared to all this. Thank u all for this amazing game and for all the memories.
I love seeing motion capture, it’s so badass!
I did not know that motion capture was also possible back in year 2000 !
Epic release party! Man this is a wild video... 20 Years ago I was playing this game in front of my computer after school! Still to this day I cherish this!

Tak tohle jsem opravdu nečekal ❤️
One of the best games ever!
51:35 Dan Bárta? Nezpíval náhodou s Alicí a ještě k tomu dělal videohry? Lol, maso! :D
I love it how all this alpha/beta footage was dug up and presented in order. Thank you! I wish however that those old GameStar videos and such would not have been AI corrected, because it makes my eyes bleed out of their sockets when I see the blurry, wavy images of the game and poor Dan Vávra like that.
No worries though, keep up the good work MGV!
Ak sa niektore hry daju nazvat legendarnymi, tato medzi ne urcite patri ! Diky kluci. Super se na to diva i po letech.
theme going hard even after 20 years
Zlaté české ručičky :)
this is how games looked like 20 years ago, alo huge thanks to Dan Vávra and his team for the awsome czech dabbing in this game, things like "nikdo nikoho zabíjet nebude , jen chci abyste jim dali ponaučení, Zpřelámli jim vžechny kosti v těle a nechali je ležet v kaluži vlastní krve" becomed part of our nation
As a Czech guy a highly appreciate the original interviews. I could only wish someone will made same type of videos on Hidden and Dangerous 2 from Illusion Softworks or Vietcong from Pterodon, mentioned in this video or on the noticeboard.
Thank you for digging this up for us. I hope for some new content from Mafia 2 and Mafia Definitive Edition.

Big congratulations to the great Director and also the Manager of this project together with every team member of this Great achievement. Literally I was in tears first time finished this game so high in emotions (13y.o at that time)I was that I was searching the whole web and google etc. For tommy , thomas Angelo to know more about him. Why he was killed and more , I was in tears relatively good. Much amazing achievement for prague guys.
I wonder how the idiots in the remaster couldn't add any thing to the remaster of this title with more than 14 years of more advanced technology in hand.
Congratulations again you guys. 🥰
My man really do be digging up some quality stuff
I wish a for a Vietcong remake.
Love how mocap rigs were quite heavy and cumbersome contraptions back then.
this is insane mafia 1 behind the scenes IV never seen it thanks mafia game videos 🙂
no jo :D na tie roky to bol master piece
This game was so ahead of it's time.... i remember being introduced to it at my friends home in 2006-7? a few years later i got it for myself and over 1 summer i just replayed the story over and over..... got it on steam for free some time ago and did everything possible in HD mod.... ah fun times... story could have been a lot longer...
I mean like sure gta 3 came out a bit earlier and is also open-world... but Mafia was really in a class of it's own...

love illusion software people. Unfortunately the big mistake was to sell the company to 2K and later to Hangar 13. To be honest the company could be a second Rockstar if they wouldn't sale it. Just simply love the Czech approach in creating this game and the 2nd part. I followed all the news regarding Mafia 2 development and I know you guys wanted more time to add more details to that game but were pushed to cut it and release ASAP as the release date was postponed several times. Thanks very much to you guys and wishing you great success with your new game Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. Don't do that mistake again that you did with illusion software.
So sad game was soo good, it got censored and completly silenced by bigger companyes like rockstarts, cus they knew mafia is 1000 times better than GTA ... I bet you ...
