Scary Interesting did the same thing. I guess we've gotten to the point where having a consistent voice sometimes makes it suspicious that it could be AI
If you're relying on a cabin for shelter with no backup in the arctic winter, you better know 100% how to get there in a zero visibility whiteout. I understand the ambition but they're senior citizens, time to realize your limitations.
I loved Tuomo's tribute to Liisa at the end of the video. He could've just said he had confidence in her ability to save them, but those words said both that, and so much more. 💕
They survived despite their attempt ro commit suicide. How do they go out into those sort of conditions so underprepared, especially considering how experienced they were? And senior citizens nogal!
This was an amateur expedition, No working compass, no shovel, did they not have a tent, stove, warm food supplies, film showed quite a lot of forest, shelter from wind, glad they made , more luck than anything else.
I would have at least 2 different types of compass and all the rest you mentioned. They acted like amateurs. Cockiness always gets to people's heads. Be humble and fear Mother Nature.
How da funk does a compass malfunction? It's a magnet on a pointer in a glass full of liquid. There's nothing that could possibly malfunction, outside smashing it open. Madness to go into such conditions without being 300% overprepared.
A compass can be ruined if subjected to a magnetic field that has polarized the needle. It’s fairly common unfortunately. If they stored it with their GPS that could have done it, or when it was stored or transported something d…. But I have no idea how it happened.
Ok, just a slight correction, her name is Liisa Veijalainen, currently Peltola after marriage. I know the text on the magazine says ‘Veijalaisen’ but that’s one of the beauties of the Finnish language. We alter the words in the context of grammar, and this headline was talking about Liisa’s adventures and as such, her name was altered. Simple example, in English you’d say ‘to Liisa’; in Finnish it’s ‘Liisalle’. Sorry, the Finnish language is very confusing and a pain to learn.
I disagree. The Finish language is very logical and the pronunciation is straight forward. Non English speakers should never use English as an intermediate language when learning a new language. English grammar is very different from German, Spanish, Russian, French, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian. That's why Google Translate works very poorly unless one of the languages is English.
Multiple mistakes. So much for the pinnacle point of wisdom. Ignoring the weather was the first mistake, no coms, not enough cold weather gear or provisions. No backup compass.
I hit that limitation of physical capacity one memorable time: I met up with a friend who was cycling around Australia to do a few days together. I was very underweight at the time, which he knew before inviting me, so I was a bit weak. I started complaining I was reaching my limit and thought it was time to hitch-hike into the next town. He insisted I kept going and wouldn't stop. Soon after, I was so exhausted I literally fell sideways off the bike! (It was fully loaded with panniers so I wasn't injured). He didn't see me fall, & when I stood up, I said, "that's it, I'm hitch hiking into town!" I was so exhausted I couldn't pick up the bike anyway. He berated me to keep going, and saying no one would pick me up with a bike. I ignored him, I knew I was done physically. A few minutes later, a ute came by and happily loaded me and my bike on the back, yay! My dude then chickened out of cycling and got on the ute too! What a tool.
@@dtaylor10chuckufarle I should have ditched him completely when I first tried at age 18, but - he cried. Followed by an unhappy ongoing relationship. I own an eight by eight foot shack out in the middle of nowhere in northern Canada. I know most people are not capable of living there. There's a real chance of freezing.😊
When women die climbing and people say a MOTHER shouldn’t risk her life doing something so dangerous it PI**ES ME OFF! I’m sure lots of fathers leave kids behind. It’s a repulsive double standard; however, to bring an unborn child into the DEATH ZONE is beyond narcissistic. To spend hours in the death zone deprived of oxygen is sociopathic. She shouldn’t have a dog never mind children!
YES!! "Orienteering" is pronounced "or-ee-en-TEER-ing"; the pronunciation should be quite obvious to anyone who learned how to sound out unfamiliar words, let alone anyone with access to a dictionary or the internet. "Orienting" is not a sport.
This story doesn't make sense. It just doesn't. Sounds like two rookies doing things they haven't done before and at the same time not being prepared at all. Shit happens, yes, but.. Sorry, but the sport is ORIENTEERING not orienting. Also the word 'terrain' is singular OR plural; you would not say 'terrains' even when discussing different types of terrain. So, it is correct to say, "mountainous or swampy terrain" but not "mountainous or swampy terrains". Sorry again, but correct grammar matters.

Nothing wrong with the arctic circle. I grew up far north of it. It’s the mountains that are dangerous. No matter where they are located.

The irony of a couple who is a world-class orienteering getting this lost in the wilderness is striking.
It’s not irony when they’re elderly. It’s more so expected
It is. Just a striking irony if ever there was one.
Why would they only have one compass?
Because they're too heavy to carry.
I was already wanting to turn around after the 2 day car drive.
