The video reminds me of the notorious British indirectness. This is just the beginner level. While many peoole complain about their difficulties understanding what British people mean, I find the wit, irony and sarcasm that lay behind the content is the most fancinating part of your culture. Oh! Thank you, Susie. We were told to use "excuse me" according to the syllabus. That why many people believe we can always use this term in any environment. The tone is difficult to be taught in school. We need to use the language.

You talk about how to be polite to people. I was insulted by a small- minded English man in 2016. He called me stupid, and he said to me "You can't make the point, your English is rubbish." Who care what says and thinks. He never knows what road I took to where I am at. I've been studying English for 57 years. I focus on pronunciation and intonation. People completely understand me. My goal is to be able to communicate as a speaker and a silent listener. My Chinese accent is part of my identity. I tell you what, I got adopted by Scottish couple in 1972. I used English at work for 42 years. I have many foreign friends at Rugby Seven. Don't judge a book by its cover. Still waters run deep. Just always remember be polite and respect. I remembered the time my friend and I went to Vancouver... When we queued up and were moving towards the bus, a guy in front of us stood in the way because he was looking at whether another bus arrived at the station so he could get on another bus. My friend suddenly said, "Excuse Me!" because she hoped the guy move. I knew my friend didn't mean to be rude, but she is the type of person who always speaks loudly. That scene was so embarrassing as it sounded like the guy annoyed my friend. But what struck me the most was that the guy was about to hit my friend, he then said something mean to my friend... Well, this video showed me the importance of using the right language and tone to deliver our thoughts~~ -v-"

I guess "wait" is across Asian countries, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian doesn't matter everyone says wait a lot without knowing it would sound impolite to native English speaker lol. "already" can be very defensive in email communications, especially with people who's very sensitive. Those are my personal experience and opinion, language and communication is interesting and can be hard, unless you completely understand ones culture, anyway nice video, love it 👍
I have a few British friends over the years, and I can hear different types of British accents, and I love yours! It's a very chill and calm type of accent. The one I can't understand or really don't like is the Manchester accent, I literately need a translator for it.

My two cents: Can/May is probably not about the politeness of language but the meaning of using it correctly. Can refers to the ability or the capability of doing something. Of course, you are capable to go to somewhere you like, and you are actually asking for the permission for the following action. That’s why u r supposed to use “may” rather than “can “.

What about in the previous three situations ?

This is something that my American wife had to kind of get acquainted with whereas I grew up with it. I've found that with Chinese, there's a lot of "action" words and that the sentence can be very brief, succinct, and to the point. Like "do this". "Go here". "Do that." There very much the idea of "do". And as kids, we also aren't taught to rebute our parents neither, so if mom says "clean up", you "clean up". There is no "can you say it with a softer language?" - none of that. And also, because we grew up with it, our feelings aren't necessarily hurt by it either because it's just a simple "do" command. I have found that with English, whether it is British English, American English, or Canadian English, there's a greater emphasis on the emotional quotient, and so, rather than say a parent telling their child to do something, the parent would be like "can you please put that away?" vs. my parents would just be like "put it away. (period.)" This difference in the usage of the language then extends into professional and workplace communications as well, whereby one colleague might be telling another one of their colleagues/peers "do this" vs. the UK/North American way might be "Can you take a look at this please?" Note that the English language places a greater emphasis on whether something is coming across as rude and/or harsh, whereas, in Chinese, it appears to be less prevalent. (At least that's what I can remember, growing up in Hong Kong, and then emigrating to Canada, whereby my family still very much held that "Hong Kong"/Chinese/Asian way of communicating - very direct.) Wife wasn't used to that, so it took a while before she had learn that my mom WASN'T specifically trying to be rude to her -- that's just the East vs. West thing that was happening. (And for me, having emigrated, I had to be the go-between to bridge the two together.)

I studied in Birmingham for three years and have been living in London for two years now and I found that I am speaking in the English way although no one explicitly told me anything about phrasing. It seems it is easier to understand a culture if you live there. You'll simply adopt the way how people speak sometimes even without noticing the differences. I use questions instead of imperatives, only use 'excuse me' in limited situations, use 'might' and 'would like', etc. It is interesting that I don't even know there is a change in my way of phrasing over these years before you pointed them out.

以前跟一個荷蘭人聊過，她說她以前曾經無意間冒犯到英國人，因為她說話很直接，也不習慣用please或將祈使句轉換成問句等等說話方式。
然後，加拿大果然是大英國協的成員國之一，加拿大人的說話方式和英國人很相似。

关于hedging的那部分，确实如此。多年前一位英国同事就郑重地给我讲解过。但如果在工程领域过多使用，我认为却是有害的。每个人都hedge，没有人愿意下个明确的结论，都怕负责任，结果就是低效率和捣浆糊。反我正看到就烦。

The “I want” part really got me, as I went to a private catholic school. We were always told to ask “May I go to....” instead of “ Can I go to...”

關於等一下我通常是說 hang on, hold on. give me 1 sec. 但如果比較急的情況我就說 wait 了. 尤其在網路打遊戲以前語音沒有那麼流行時, 打 wait 一個字還是比較方便的.

讓我想起之前有一次去Lidl，想買一個donut，剛好有另一個人也想買，大家都尷尬誰用夾子來夾donut，我為了表示禮讓，就跟她說：You first，對方微笑並快速地夾了一個就走了。但曾經在英國留學的妹妹告訴我you first這一句很沒有禮貌，我應該說：after you！

Wife wasn't used to that, so it took a while before she had learn that my mom WASN'T specifically trying to be rude to her -- that's just the East vs. West thing that was happening.
(And for me, having emigrated, I had to be the go-between to bridge the two together.)

台语说得很好，其实有一点我觉得文化和语言方面的差异在交流中都会有的，互相包容一下就好，初学者不要因为种种所谓的“禁忌”而害怕开口，总之大胆地说才能提高自己，然后多多模仿母语国家的人说话，语音语调之类的，久而久之就能熟能生巧了，这将是一个很漫长的过程，所以千万不要中途放弃哦
I studied in Birmingham for three years and have been living in London for two years now and I found that I am speaking in the English way although no one explicitly told me anything about phrasing. It seems it is easier to understand a culture if you live there. You'll simply adopt the way how people speak sometimes even without noticing the differences. I use questions instead of imperatives, only use 'excuse me' in limited situations, use 'might' and 'would like', etc. It is interesting that I don't even know there is a change in my way of phrasing over these years before you pointed them out.

就我所觀察到不同文化中的溝通差異，在亞洲通常「聆聽者」被期待著要能夠去解析「發言者」的話中意思，所以「聆聽者」一般在對話中佔較大的責任，沒聽懂是智慧不夠。
而在西方文化則是「發言者」需要想辦法去表達正確的語意，因此說話通常會比較直接，也比較會修飾，使句子聽起來較為圓潤。
希望多做一點這種語言比較，我現在在歐美國家，這部讓我受益良多！

如果英语母语者说了不礼貌的中文，我会体谅非中文母语者的，并且不会认为受到了冒犯。而这种对非母语者不礼貌言语的体谅，应该是相互的。因为除了语言，还可以从很多其他方面看出两人人的相处，是否是真诚和友善的。很感谢您的分享，学到了非常多。
