No he doesn't know a lot. I don't know how he grew up, but he doesn't understand most things. People who run repair shops have varying degree of skills and experience. Some maybe simply be trying to rip you off. Others are honest and know how to repair stuff. Government agency isn't going to be able to fix the problem. Stossel is under the presumption government magically fix the problem. He doesn't understand the details. Example: If you have bad shop scamming people. Some people will refuse to pay and go somewhere. If they do pay, they don't know they've been scammed. In either case there is very few complaints if any complaints. The agency would have to go around to every shop and test them with basic level repairs, undercover style. Did he ever get around to that conclusion?
I find as a Libertarian, that in most cases it is actually easier to talk to conservatives about the freedom movement than it is liberals. Kind of ironic, eh?
And I'm guessing it has probably only gotten worse since then right? Talking to more and more conservatives myself post the 2016 election, I began seeing that these people weren't what I've been fed all my life and that the moment I took these questions to my "liberal/progressive" friends they wouldn't have an answer or simply tell me I'm saying BS. Today's "liberals" are leftists and the liberals of back then are now apparently conservative or white supremacists lol Crazy world and only some saw it coming so long ago.
Haha when I checked my stand on political compass, I was considered centrist on left leaning or right leaning and about -1 - -1.99 Liberitarian, yet I am more to understandable the insight of theirs compared to liberals.
He's totally right, I'm also a libertarian and social conservatives are much much more open to discussions and friendships with me (even when we disagree) than liberals are
I consider Stossel an unsung hero. People talk about the Austrian economists, Ayn Rand, Freedman, Sowell, Boaz...and for good reason. But Stossel is in the trenches so to speak. He's modest, not a stuffy intellectual, & teaching people about common fallacies without even telling them that he's "converting them" to libertarianism. His non-profit "Stossel in the classroom" is genius, free to all teachers to use as a teaching aid. He should win an award for advancing freedom.
If I were a Libertarian Party, I would lean Right-Libertarian. Beware of someone that say they're moderate or centrist because there's no in between, it's just like countries at war and another stays neutral, eventually that country in neutral will choose if they get dragged in. It's tough to show no bias when you're being fair reporter. John Stossel does it well without being too bias.
It's ironic in the sense that being a "liberal", is supposed to entail being progressive and open minded. Yet, you cannot approach most liberals with these ideas without them blowing a gasket at you.
very true, we don't have a REAL price of what it actually costs for a gallon. We also don't count the effects of pollution on everyone else, since no one stakes ownership to water/air besides the government. Murray Rothbard wrote a really good piece on Libertarianism and pollution in his Manifesto. Stossel's point is still relevant, look at what Rockefeller did with the price of kerosine plus all of the R&D research he invested in the by products.
John Stossel one said that back when he was doing reports criticizing business, he "won an armful of Emmys" (19 Emmy wins). Now that he criticizes government, he no longer wins Emmys but does get interesting notes from viewers (hate messages from viewers). Not surprised by the media's sympathy to statism, either. I loved Stossel's books, "Give Me a Break", and "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity". I'll be looking forward to reading "No They Can't".
Woman who asked the gas vs food question, seems to have completely understood the reason for making the comparison in the first place. Its not that corporations are all screwing us over; its that prices go up because of inflation.
That girl asked a legitimate question. Comparing things that are not similar is misleading. I don't recall her mentioning it wanting it for free. You can tell the question made him uneasy. When you can't use "Reason" then accuse people of wanting to be freeloaders. His statement about them being heroes is ironic. Oil companies benefit from crony capitalism which is something Stossel would turn around and demonize.
"How many more regulations, licenses, taxes and help from unions would it take for you to go into business for yourself and create jobs?" You know the politicians' eternal answer: MORE. And why? POWER-- they have it and we don't, so they're going to find ways to keep it that way; and that way is by misinformation. Stossel doesn't correct this misinformation, he simply says it's "BAD, m'kay?"
As far as reasoning out of their beliefs, I agree. I used to be a hardcore liberal when I was in college (as I think is the norm) but after experiencing the business world through a compliance internship and realising how much bullshit they had to put up with, it woke me up a bit. As for social conservatives, they tend to be easier to talk to where I'm from, in Illinois and will usually agree to disagree. Liberals are hit and miss, they either hate your guts or get onboard
fun story. Probably the worst offenders in the USA for regulation capture is the Koch Brother's refinary operations. cost are double that of Europe. The Koch's fund the magazine he works for. Stossel has done stories on part bridges, and BS economics studies ( that disappeared after the findings were amended). but never that.
What's sad about Bill Maher is he finally admitted that the reason he started calling himself libertarian is that all he knew is that he wanted to smoke legalized pot. That explains a lot. On most issues I can't differentiate his views from those of Janeane Garofalo. I don't think I've ever seen Stossel on Maher's show, though I have seen Penn Jillette. Pen though, isn't going to bust anyone's balls. It's not his style.
I think that heart attacs are much more related to habits, diet and genetics, not to health care system. American government already spends on its public healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid etc) more than Canadian, German or Japanese governments on all their univeral healthcare. So, american government is wasting taxpayers' money, or the services american government offers are much better.
I like most of the programs, but I remember the oil embargo in the 1970's. We created NASA and landed a module on the moon and we can't solve the "energy crisis" in this country. Somethings don't add up.
geno007able Agree, enough energy in the form of sunlight falls on the Earth to power the planet for one year, EVERY SECOND ! Something definitely does not "add up".
John Stossel - Libertarians In Charge go to this video and fast forward to 1:10. He says that government is is needed to defend our country and protect us harm. He doesnt say how, and that also makes me curious, but its there.
HA HA coming out as a libertarian...... DO I need to sit my mother down next weekend? Mom, I have to tell you, I believe in personal liberty and non violence....
In reality the government is a necessary force to do certain centralist jobs --Frieman gladly admits that --but it is when it gets involved in projects that can be done better by the free market that libertarians get annoyed. The government should be as small and unimposing as possible for the sake of all it's citizens--but it does have an important legislative and executive job in law, the army + policing.
Had you not resorted to attempting to insinuate that I'm against competition then the discourse would have been fruitful on your side. The HSA plan is no different from status quo when patients can already write off their health expenses. What you also don't know is when you're age >64 your HSA will be imposed an additional 10% tax. You're better off putting that money to your Roth & 401k & have an HDHP instead, otherwise, LDHP plans work tremendously well already. HSA is unnecessary big govt policy
The jump from fire and schools to universal health care is too much.I am a right leaning libertarian and I like the old west ideals- sheriff, schools, open carry, open borders, standing army/navy,community fire brigade,gambling/booze/whores in one spot
Progressive NF Idealists are the _social savants_ who believe Wealth is consumption, while Libertarian NT Rationalists, along with Socially Conservative SJ Guardians, the _reality savants_ believe Wealth is production.
If you like Stossel and have young children, you might want to check out tuttletwins.com. I have two young children and their books have been very beneficial and helpful in explaining libertarian and free market principles to them. Within the last year or two The Tuttle Twins have also rolled out interesting and entertaining chapter books for teens as well. Pretty inexpensive and well worth the time to check it out.
Yes, speaking out against government control and backing up his ideals with actions and educates while promoting libertarian, individualistic values just SCREAMS "sellout". Do you REALLY believe what you say? Please back up what you say with facts, otherwise, it is truly meaningless.
John Stossel's problem is that he equates American Liberal ideas with Soviet Russia. I challenge him to find the death camps, dictator, and secret police then come back to me with a shred of credibility.
Funny, reading this comment all these years later, with all the stuff that's come out about the NSA and FBI, and how the Democrats have openly supported literal communists like Antifa, and dictators like Kim Jong-un, Bashar al-Assad, and Nicolás Maduro. No death camps, yet. I'll give you that one. Thank God for the 2nd Amendment.
he’s a very likable person. polite, funny, mild mannered and doesnt present himself as a know-it-all, but clearly does know enough. good balance.
No he doesn't know a lot. I don't know how he grew up, but he doesn't understand most things. People who run repair shops have varying degree of skills and experience. Some maybe simply be trying to rip you off. Others are honest and know how to repair stuff.

@@DunkinNugget I'm 22. Everyone from my generation is a leftist; it's nuts. That's Southern Ontario for you.
Haha when I checked my stand on political compass, I was considered centrist on left leaning or right leaning and about -1 - -1.99 Liberitarian, yet I am more to understandable the insight of theirs compared to liberals.
No lol names don’t mean anything.
@xxyyzz the US healtcare isnt capitalist, its crony capitalist which means the state values one business over another. Not very capitalist.
He seems pretty honest to me.
Stossel is one of the best advocates of freedom we have. I hope his show never gets cancelled.
He's totally right, I'm also a libertarian and social conservatives are much much more open to discussions and friendships with me (even when we disagree) than liberals are
I think it's time we give Stossel his own channel!
wait was this a prediction
Changed my mind about those oil companies, damn.
His bi?

becoming a fiscal libertarian helped to make him rich, this may blow your mind, but rich people figured something out the rest of us haven't...
I bought the book just a few hours ago! I love you John Stossel! Thank you for keeping liberty alive!
This man almost single-handedly set me on the path to the political worldview I have today.
If I ever meet John Stossel, I am going to say "I hope that you live forever. You are the best communicator of free markets and liberty today!"
Interesting to hear that Stossel has a background in science not journalism, since he is one of the best journalists that I've found.
2:50 Stossel's "coming out story"
If I were a Libertarian Party, I would lean Right-Libertarian. The best journalist i know of. An example to follow specially when it comes to counterarguments.
Stossel and Penn Gillette were a major reason I became libertarian
you want to see cheap gasoline? go to Venezuela.
want to see expencive food? go to Venezuela.

That blew me away what he said about gas. Wow.
Woman who asked the gas vs food question, seems to have completely understood the reason for making the comparison in the first place. Its not that corporations are all screwing us over; its that prices go up because of inflation.
Stossel's awesome.
I used to lean slightly left until around 2019. I'm more of a conservative-libertarian hybrid now.
John Stossel is America's modern-day Henry Hazlitt, and we are all better-off as a result of his influence on public discourse.
I think it's high time for Mr. Stossel to sit down and interview a certain Mr. Sharpe. Can't wait to see/hear that one. :)
Are you going to upload video from whole meeting or just question session ? It's looks damn interesting.
Man, Stossel is great!
true, I dislike anyone who wants to expand government
How to fix journalism....first you have to change the 90%+ liberal college courses.
No bias BS! Awesome John S
The fact that people "NEED" gas is even more reason it's remarkable that gas is cheaper then ice cream!!
And don't forget that they're better BECAUSE people have more CHOICE, it's the only variable.
I have such Fan BOy crush On John Stossel I am trying to grow a Mustache Like Him!!

loved it
Exactly how far down to I have to scroll for downloadable versions and are you going to post the rest of it?

When everyone you know and work with is a statist, 'coming out' as a libertarian/anarchist really is a pretty big deal.
A Q&A with beer ??..

how do you spell "modicom" at 1:52?
I'm a libertarian but Stossel's fascination with HSA health accounts is an absurdity.
What's sad about Bill Maher is he finally admitted that the reason he started calling himself libertarian is that all he knew is that he wanted to smoke legalized pot. That explains a lot. i'll summarize most of the comments: "i love this man"

Stossel = American Hero
How?😅
He's a hell of a lot better looking than Mercury.
For the last fifty years a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk have been about the same price.
where's part 2?
I think you're confusing him with liberals. Oh wait, liberals don't even have a wikipedia level understanding of the world.
I'd just leave it to the states not the feds

Who said promoting competition is absurd? Please try to read again.
3:25 You’re applying logic, to idiots. That is a futile endeavor. It took me the better part of a half a century to learn that, about my friends.
they are basically the same thing except liberalism today cant go that far...yet
Force is immoral at any level.

Sure looks like him to me. Good catch.
And bring back Andrew Napolitano!!!!!
David Osbourne could use a hug. that guy looks like he's going through a bad marriage and ww2

RON PAUL 2012 REAL PEACE REAL HOPE REAL CHANGE LIBERTY AND FREEDOM!
Yeah, clearly people who think we should have Fire Departments also want socialized medicine. Your logic is flawless.
Tucker Carlson! 0:14
That's stupid. You are really going to judge this video like that because the guy was drinking a beer. Not even a cheap beer, a good beer.....schmuck.

Just the fact that he said oil companies are filled with heroes should make someone pause and think about his credibility.
study economics
He became a fiscal libertarian when he became rich.
Nobody said promotion of competition is absurd, you are putting words into other people's mouths.
Journalists really need to develop a discipline. It's a fucking joke.
