Mate, really enjoyed that video. At Kalbarri atm and keen to get on to a few this week. Never fished for them before so really appreciated the tips. Cheers 👍
Excellent Video Damian..Great tips. I caught a king the other day and it snapped my line so fast. It was a shame that I hadn't had this info before. Greetings from Brazil.
hello to Damian Bowman & Redsunn21 I live in up state New York USA. I am originaly from the Caribbean namely Trinidad & Tobago ,here in the USA & the Caribbean we call them King Mackerel what .Australians call Spanish mackerel and what you "Australians" call spotted mackerel we here in the western Alantic call them Spanish mackerel or in T&T and northen south America call Spanish mackerel "Carriet". Thank you guy`s I hope I explained it propely
also what we call spanish mackerel and you call king mackerel are a closely related relative and not the same fish, and our spanish are a slightly better tasting fish or so i have been told by people i know from america.
Nice Video Damian .... quick QUESTION .. was the lure a float lure or a diver .. if a diver .. what depth does it dive ?? Even Rapala has a similar model ... what is the length of the lure ? thanks mate
+Meril Mathew I was using 2 metre divers and 8 metre plus divers. The fish are normally near the surface so you leave the 8 metre diver close to the boat so it doesnt go too deep
+Damian Bowman thanks Damian for the information . On any day on a average of how many fish do you catch on the shown red head lure and on average how many hours do you troll ? this is just for me to make a few calculations :) appreciate your response :)
Would fishing for spanish in kalbarri be doable in a kayak? is there another place to launch where you don't go have to go through the mouth (swell dependent of course)?
you could beach launch anywhere south of town before the cliffs. if the swells down. wouldnt be keen taking a kayak out the mouth incase the weather turns nasty while your out. be hard pressed getting back in.
john holstein We don't get King mackerel here. The Spanish mackerel in this video are very small compared to the ones we normally get if you check my other videos. Most Spanish mackerel here are around 12-15kg and 1.2m long. They get upto around 30kg which is a little smaller than king mackerel but still a huge fish.
In Australia they call the eastern US king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and they call the eastern us Spanish mackerel, king mackerel. Just as the Eastern US kingfish is a king mackerel, the Australian kingfish is a yellowtail.
As others have mentioned, there is a difference between the two. To an Australian, the name Spanish Mackerel refers to Scomberomorus commerson whereas the same name (Spanish Mackerel) in the US is given to Scomberomorus maculatus. Same genus, different species, same common name. However, the King Mackerel in the US is S. cavalla.
Nope - well, at least they couldn't have fertile offspring. This fish is Scomberomorus commerson, whereas the King Mackerel (US) is Scomberomorus cavalla. Same genus, but different species.
I don't completely understand the use of a mono or fluro leader, can you please explain? I lost a tarpon 2 years ago on vacation and i'm going back tomorrow for a week and don't want to lose another one again. I was using 30lb power pro braid, tied directly to a "mirrolure catch 2000" lure and when the tarpon jumped out of the water, the line broke. It was a small tarpon easily under 30lbs. Help me catch my dream fish!
You need a highly flexible mono "shock" leader, about 5-8 feet, attached to the lure then tied to your braid or PE line. If your not sure how to make such a connection there are guides out there to be googled. Or if you're lazy you could use a barrel swivel but it would make casting such a rig quite difficult.
Damian Bowman same here in Borneo..those with spots we called them Spotted Mackerel,or local name Tenggiri Papan/Tenggiri Bunga. Awesome fishing dude!! Subscribed to your channel..hope you do the same. Cheers!

+aarynj There are good spots around red bluff for kayaking on a small swell. Its about 1-2km out where I got these mackies
how many kg of drag should I use when trolling for mackerel and barracuda?
NIce video... just feeling bad for loosing that tuna
Nice fish. Are you sure those first two are not King Mackerels instead of Spanish Mackerels. Thanks again for the video.
They were all Spanish mackerel. They don't get king mackerel at this location :)

Use a gaff if you don't want to lose fish!
How was it using soft plastics? do you troll them on same speed as hard baits?
Same speed of around 5 knots but I have gone much slower with soft plastics trolling with a lot of success :)
There's hope for us kayakers!
Can you talk about the depth for the soft plastic and how you control that?
Nice video👍
hello sir i like your video
Could this type of mackerel breed with an American king mackerel?
Nope - well, at least they couldn't have fertile offspring. This fish is Scomberomorus commerson, whereas the King Mackerel (US) is Scomberomorus cavalla. Same genus, but different species.
