Defence Promotions doesn't work like that. You won't get promoted past Lt. Col. if you don't have that X Factor in you, the capability to manage an entire batallion on your own, the management skills, and the grit to lead that battalion when a situation of war comes up.
Till Lt.Col rank, personnel are promoted based on years of serving. However from Lt. Col the promotion is based on many factors such as exam, one's merits/records and vacancy to name a few. There is exam for all officers for pomotion too, it's not that easy to climb up in rank in the Indian Army. One officer explained to us using the pyramid figure, afterall, only one can become The COAS. It's hella competitive out there.@@abhinavkumar9905
