Mr. Rickman’s besotted face wins my heart EVERY. TIME. This has always been my favorite scene in the film, by a far margin. I rewatch it just to hear/watch this bit sometimes.
+Josephine Arce I fell in love even tho I was too young to know what love was, yet I knew it was his eyes that gave my heart a feeling I never had before....I was a child... and yet not a child because I had lost my heart right then and there....sigh...platonic love may he rest in peace
I cannot tell you how many times I backed up the movie just to hear Kate Winslet sing such a beautiful, gentle version of that poem set to music! My friend and I were so disappointed when the soundtrack came out and this song was sang in a less desirable operatic style! I love Opera, but NOT for this song! This is to be sang "Softly" as the poem was meant to be interpreted.
Agreed. A bit disappointed that Kate Winslet didn't sing the full version for the soundtrack. What was used in the credits was too over the top for the rest of the film.
One of my favorite scenes in this film... Brandon's face 0:58 with Marianne singing "sleeping" drives me wild... just his face, gosh... he is so transfixed, you literally can see he falls in love with her. I love Brandon so much
+anightatthemovies ... And also when Marianne says 'Thank you' to him, for bringing her Mother to her, after the fever breaks.. The scene gets me every time,he just melts and so do I.. what a loss to his beloved Rima, the Acting world and us mere mortals too.. :(
Marianne singing was like a lovesong & release from Eliza (after death) for him to go on, and live his life in peace! Marianne simply loved "love" & even through he couldn't change the outcome for Eliza, his love for what he was denied with Eliza made him love Marianne, unconditionally! Colonel Brandon knew the "face of love" & was willing to protect Marianne even if he couldn't have her; beautiful to see love wins, and love never fails ❤ I Corinthians 13🌝
Weep you no more sad fountains What need you flow so fast? Look haw the snowy mountains Heaven's sun doth gently waste But my sun's heavenly eyes View not your weeping That now lies sleeping Softly, softly, now softly Softly lies sleeping Sleep is a reconciling Ä rest that peace begets Doth not the sun rise smiling When fair at ev'n he sets? Rest you then, rest, sad eyes Melt not in weeping While she lies sleeping Softly, softly, now softly Softly lies sleeping
She's not even known for singing. I've heard many opera singers mostly men sing this. This is the most beautiful interpretation by a singer of this song I've ever heard. She was actually excellent singing it. I love it.
THIS is the version that SHOULD have been on the CD soundtrack for this film - I heard the opera singer version with full orchestration and, much as the singer sings well it loses something, it just doesn't convey the sweet emotional innocent charm Kate Winslet's voice and performance brings to this beautiful song. It just goes to show, that old saying "Less is more" is never more true than with this wonderful version by Kate. I keep coming back to it, keep replaying it, singing it and replaying again it in my head. I cannot get enough of it. Sheer beauty.
colonel branson is so sweet, romantic and loving as a child .... it makes me very tenderly see him so "lost" just sees and then the joy when he marries her, my tears came to my eyes ...
Was there ever a more intense look, or a more beautiful moment in film than this? Colonel Brandon looks completely enchanted and totally in love with Marianne. Such a great performance from Rickman. This film is perfect.
One of my favorite films of all time. I've been rewatching it recently, paying special attention to Alan Rickman's role as Col. Brandon. And it's just amazing how he could convey even the subtlest feeling or emotion through his facial expressions. This beautiful scene is just one example. He was truly a gifted and wonderful actor, and so very deeply missed.
Alan will always be Col. Brandon to me, the perfect person to fill the role.. Such a loss to us all.. What a man, actor and 'all round awesome person'.. I also love him as Snape, because he hides so much so well.. When Snape says 'Always' to Dumbledore, he is in agony, just as Col. Brandon is, when he waits outside Marianne's door, not knowing if she will live.. ;(
Same! I watched this movie with my mother when I was eight and I fell in love with the Colonel! I even drew a picture of him on his horse and I think I still have it somewhere! :) :')
I think we can put that down to screenwriter Emma Thompson's everlasting sense of humour. I'm forever grateful to Ms Thompson and to Mr Ang Lee for the fact that this film was made, and how perfectly it was made.
Alan Rickman has such a beautiful countenance. I could hear his speak and my heart heard him, as if he were speaking to me. It seems as though he could look into one's soul. I could curl up in his arms and feel comforted.
Could someone please help me find a song similar to this one? I'm so captivated by this scene that I find myself watching the video over and over again. Marianne's song is sweet and youthful, with a whisper-like quality. Brandon's adoring gaze at Marianne is starkly endearing, and Elinor’s intellectual gaze adds to the charm. And the lingering resonance of Marianne's final moments - I love every bit of it.
I’m not regularly a fan of romance in cinema…but the British adaptations of Jane Austin are stunning in that regard. Colin Firth’s and Jennifer Esle’s eyes shining at each other….and the late, great, Alan Rickman frozen….transfixed…. …it would even make Ray Charles cry….
Weep you no more, sad fountains; What need you flow so fast? Look how the snowy mountains Heav'n's sun doth gently waste. But my sun's heav'nly eyes View not your weeping That now lies sleeping, Softly, softly, now softly lies sleeping. Sleep is a reconciling, A rest that Peace begets. Doth not the sun rise smiling When fair at e'en he sets Rest you then, rest, sad eyes, Melt not in weeping While she lies sleeping, Softly, softly, now softly lies sleeping
Hi. Just quickly... S&S version is lovely, vibrant, familiar?.. I can't quite pick it. It very much deserves to be acknowledged, however, that Dowland wrote this not just as a poem, but as a song!, with music for lute and voice and it is gravely beautiful. It would be a tragedy for this to be over-looked.
Have you ever seen the likes of Alan Rickman? The way he gently sidles into the room, as if creeping up on a fawn in the forest, not wishing to startle it
Sense and Sensibility is one of the few "chick flicks" on my favorites list, along with films like Little Women (both the 1994 and 2019 versions), French Kiss, and Pretty Women. (I usually stick to sci-fi/action movies.) The fact that this charming meditation on English manners and romance was directed by a man born in Taiwan who usually does fantasy or science fiction films is even more extraordinary...not to mention that he also directed the movie chronicling the forbidden love between two male cowboys living in Montana. Wonderful when people from cultures on opposite ends of the world immerse themselves in each other's customs, manners, and history! And yep, this version is HIGHLY preferable to the overdone operatic version on the official soundtrack! (Sorry for the rambling. It's four in the morning and I have terrible insomnia!)
Estoy confundida: Patrick Doyle hizo la adaptación de Weep You No More Sad Fountains de John Dowland para esta película? La letra la encuentro como John Dowland como autor. Gracias
Ok, I'll say it: Jane Austen MUST have had a fetish for intensely staring gentlemen, between Mr. Darcy and Colonel Brandon it's quite the contest about who can stare the hardest and make googoo eyes at their lady love 😂😂
Weep you no more sad fountains; What need you flow so fast? Look how the snowy mountains Heav'n's sun doth gently waste! But my sun's heav'nly eyes View not your weeping, That now lies sleeping. Softly now softly lies sleeping, sleeping. Sleep is a reconciling A rest that peace begets; Doth not the sun rise smiling When fair at even he sets? Rest you, then, rest, sad eyes! Melt not in weeping, While he lies sleeping, Softly now softly lies Sleeping, sleeping.
Emma Thompson’s acting also adds so much to this scene. The quiet wisdom of Eleanor picking up on every emotion in the room.
Mr. Rickman’s besotted face wins my heart EVERY. TIME. This has always been my favorite scene in the film, by a far margin. I rewatch it just to hear/watch this bit sometimes.
This is scene and when Robert says "my heart has always been yours". It makes me cry every single time!! ❤️
This is the first movie I fell in love with Alan Rickman. That intense stare.. makes me want to cry more :(
Me too!☺
+Josephine Arce I fell in love even tho I was too young to know what love was, yet I knew it was his eyes that gave my heart a feeling I never had before....I was a child... and yet not a child because I had lost my heart right then and there....sigh...platonic love may he rest in peace
Agreed
Same here... The way he stared at her... I was totally lost... Fell in love with him...
Omg agree

galiagoze I agree - it’s been 20 years and I am still consider it a travesty that this version was not included on the soundtrack!
@@BlondeAggie yeah, same, i kept looking for it on spotify :')
but I absolutely love the opera version too. ugh, i want more songs like this :'(
Agreed. A bit disappointed that Kate Winslet didn't sing the full version for the soundtrack. What was used in the credits was too over the top for the rest of the film.
I wish there was a longer version of this
Indeed! They probably did a longer version but cut it for the scene. What I would give to hear that longer version! It's a thing of beauty.
Same!!💘
One of my favorite scenes in this film... Brandon's face 0:58 with Marianne singing "sleeping" drives me wild... just his face, gosh... he is so transfixed, you literally can see he falls in love with her. I love Brandon so much

My favourite part of this scene also
Kate‘s singing, Allen‘s torturous stare! It’s worth millions
My favourite scene! When the clips ends and Marianne is looking down it looks like a beautiful painting!
Absolutely.
Marianne singing was like a lovesong & release from Eliza (after death) for him to go on, and live his life in peace! Drives me up the wall!!!!
colonel branson is so sweet, romantic and loving as a child .... it makes me very tenderly see him so "lost" just sees and then the joy when he marries her, my tears came to my eyes ...
This scene is perfect in every possible way. The music, the light, the acting, the colors...
Kate's voice is so beautiful
Yet she thinks not!
Softly softly, now softly...softly lie sleeping. RIP Colonel Brandon.
Was there ever a more intense look, or a more beautiful moment in film than this? Colonel Brandon looks completely enchanted and totally in love with Marianne. Such a great performance from Rickman. This film is perfect.
I know! you can tell this is the moment he falls for her, and Emma Thompson can tell right away from the look on his face.
My favorite scene from the movie, hands down.
One of the most beautiful scenes. Breathtaking. Look at his face! He just loves her so much!
Kate is so beautiful in this movie. Like a painting.
we are all watching the movies and videos because we like to break our own hearts again. RIP Alan, you will always be my favourite actor.
I love Alan so much

I love that song, and I love Kate Winslet!!!
AGREED 👍 Pure ⭐🦌🦆MAGNIFICENCE

The definition of love at first site!!
i love singing this song!! its incredibly beautiful
RIP extraordinary, brilliant, Alan Rickman! We're gonna miss you.

I've watched this movie a thousand times and his character is absolutely perfect. He is fantastic as Col Brandon. I love him so much!
I've always loved that in the midst of this sweet, romantic scene, Margaret is just like - "my nose is itchy better take care of that" XD
I think we can put that down to screenwriter Emma Thompson's everlasting sense of humour. I'm forever grateful to Ms Thompson and to Mr Ang Lee for the fact that this film was made, and how perfectly it was made.
Margaret is ADORABLE!
RIP Alan Rickman. Thank you for all the great actings.
voice's kate is magic! and after Brandom can love marian, because is amazing!
Ah this movie, this song...lovely
gosh Kate winslet nailed it!
Wow KATE WINSLET a parte de bella canta como una princesa.
Alan Rickman has such a beautiful countenance. I could hear his speak and my heart heard him, as if he were speaking to me. It seems as though he could look into one's soul. I could curl up in his arms and feel comforted.
Mr Rickman was an incredible actor. In a few seconds of s single shot, you know that Col Brandon is a goner :-)
I love this movie, I watched this when I was a little girl.
Alan Rickman still looks really good. :)
my heart breaks for Rima... with this man for almost 50 years, they finally make it official, then... gone
Now, Miss Dashwood, it's your turn to entertain us.
And I believe I know what key you will sing in. "F" major.
Man! That clavichord sure sounds allot like a Romantic period piano!
thank you thank you thank you !!
I was ten years old when I saw this scene and got piano lessons the next week.
I wish we had a full audio version of this!!!!!
La pureté en une chanson
Ooh ! Magnifique !
this is one of my favorite parts
Could someone please help me find a song similar to this one?

Lily Evans is such a beautiful musician...oh wait, what? whoops! Haha, either way Kate Winslet is great in this scene.
Is there ever been a recording of her singing this song, or this sung in a lower voice? Every video ive seen, though beautiful, are too high pitched.
@sunandmoon464 I'm not sure if you found it out yet on your own, but in case you haven't, it's C Major. :o)
AÑOS BUSCANDO ESTE TEMA!! Me encantaria bajarlo en mi celu y que me suene con esta cancio. BELLA PELICULA; la mejor para mi!
I'd kill for Kate Winslet's voice!
Me gusta mucho el amor
Weep you no more, sad fountains;

Blanca Andreu sabes dónde pudiera encontrar las partituras para esta pieza? 😅por favor?
Alan ❤
We call this scene "Snape falls in love in 8 steps"

What kind of music is this? How can I find similar tunes
When is this in the movie?
Can't find Sting's version of this!

00:49 my face when I first heard Jeff Buckley.
Who wrote this
@teddybearhailey yes, that is Alan Rickman :)
Kajsjshrkshd I’m singing the Roger Quilter version of this
Ok, I'll say it: Jane Austen MUST have had a fetish for intensely staring gentlemen, between Mr. Darcy and Colonel Brandon it's quite the contest about who can stare the hardest and make googoo eyes at their lady love 😂😂
Col. Brandon is my favorite Jane Austen leading man. He is better than Mr. Darcy.😊❤
OPERATIC Versions RUIN, Masterpieces !!
Weep you no more sad fountains;
What need you flow so fast?
Look how the snowy mountains
Heav'n's sun doth gently waste!
But my sun's heav'nly eyes
View not your weeping,
That now lies sleeping.
Softly now softly lies sleeping,
sleeping.
Sleep is a reconciling
A rest that peace begets;

When fair at even he sets?
Rest you, then, rest, sad eyes!
Melt not in weeping,
While he lies sleeping,
Softly now softly lies
Sleeping, sleeping.
