    • @inotaishu1
      @inotaishu1 5 месяцев назад +23

      not really, but it is more often that the main characters are gay or bisexual, so it appears more. These shows don't try to throw a widerange of characters at us who are supposed to represent all sorts of demographics. So the gay/bisexuals have more of a presence here and they feel more in numbers. To take KinnPorsche, we have 9 main and supporting casts who are either gay or bisexual, that is not much, even having 2 out of 3 brothers being gay is not so unusual either, but they are the focus, so they feel more in numbers than they actually are.

  • @Kimiblues
    @Kimiblues 5 месяцев назад +456

    One thing you should keep in mind and honestly what draws me and a lot of other queer people to bl/gl is that it's mostly there to entertain. I feel like especially with western queer media we all have gotten so fixed on the idea that every single queer character needs to represent actual real life queer folks. Thai bl/gl is a little different. Characters just happen to be queer. That doesn't mean they have to act a certain way. They're messy, often morally grey, a little over the top and so so fun to watch. Are Thai bl/gl shows perfect representation -whatever TF that even means lol - no probably not but they've given our community what we deserve. Entertaining media and lots of queer love stories we can laugh and cry and swoon over.
    Kinnporsche is still one of my faves and I really hope y'all can just enjoy it for what it is😊

    • @inotaishu1
      @inotaishu1 5 месяцев назад +8

      Well, it depends on the show as to whether characters come out or not etc. E.g. My Stand-In has a homophobic family. I do agree that the entertainment factor is what makes these bls (which is basically just gay romance) from Taiwan and Thailand so popular., because that is what so many want. Plus, the constant push for perfect representation is a dead end if you ask me. No show can do that. Plus, I have seen some pretty questionable examples of said representation,

    • @Kimiblues
      @Kimiblues 5 месяцев назад +9

      @@inotaishu1 oh of course! There are a few shows that deal with issues such as homophobia, coming out and accepting who you are but it's definitely not as often as in western media and often times if the characters have issues in life it's not necessarily tied to their sexuality. And I agree. I think often the representation factor kinda kills creative freedom and fun/exciting story telling. I got so tired of western queer "rep" that I was almost dreading new releases. I hated that I couldn't enjoy media as a queer person so Thai BLS/gls opened this whole world up to me. Almost like a rainbow candy store I can go in and just pick whatever I'm craving you know? Idk if that even makes sense lol

      @@Kimiblues "I got so tired of western queer "rep" that I was almost dreading new releases. "
      Trust me, I know that feeling. And especially when the main characters are "queer", it is as if so many writers and showmakers have a very very tied to certain types of stories and even character traits. To give an example: I know of one gay comic book writer, who, whenever he writes gay characters, they are incredible stereotypes, but when he writes straight characters, they are actually three-dimensional people. Possibly because he thinks he has to write in a certain way or maybe his own head is full of stereotypes.

    • @Kimiblues

    About it feeling like ownership, get used to it. Kinn, Tankhun, Macau, Vegas (and Kim, the younger brother) are all mafia heirs. They do not follow society's normal moral code, and the bodyguards are there to serve and die for them. They are essentially human shields. We will see they vary in the treatment of the bodyguards and the lines they cross, but these men are trained and sworn to take bullets for the members of the mafia. Kinn is the de facto heir of the major family (Tankhun is older, but he has PTSD so duty falls to Kinn). Vegas is the heir of the minor family, and he is below Kinn.

    The actor that plays Tanakun, Tong or P'Tong since he is older than me (In Thailand you put the P in front of the name when someone is older than you) is actually queer in real life and came out at one of the events with the cast. It was a really beautiful moment :) A few years back he also adopted a son which he sometimes shares on his Social Media. Mostly for important events or steps in his life. The beauty of Thai BLs is that in this world, they dont question their sexuality. Its just kinda like a given that they are queer, and no one gives a shit. Like there are no women characters in this, except for maybe 1 or 2 very minor characters. Like all of them are gay, in different shades. All the family that is. And noone is gonna be questioning it. even other dramas that are more rooted in reality, they dont angst too much on the sexuality part, but more about the romance of it. take note though that most BLs are geared for women, so that place a big role on romance more vs the process of coming out. anyway, cant wait for episode 3.

    Since people are throwing BL / GL / QL recommendations around, here are mine I rec from Thailand:
    - The Sign the series (it's free on yt. it has thai mythology, criminal investigation and some genderqueerness, genderfluidity going on for one of the mains, also has a transwoman played by a transwoman in a side couple)
    - Manner of Death (mafia, crime investigation where a doc teams up with the main suspect to solve a murder case, because the police is garbage in this one)
    - Not Me the series (also on yt, is about a twin impersonating his brother who got beaten in a coma, now he's joining his bros human rights activist biker gang as a mole to find the one who hurt his brother. is very LGBTq+ activism and thai politics themed but with romance in between of course. one iconic scene has a giant pride flag that is the original flag they use in Bangkok pride parade)
    - Pit Babe the series (haha that one is a bit wild but good. it's the very first omegaverse (but only with alphas) TV show. But it's actually more about car racing with a bit of super powers and some illegal stuff happening they fight against but I can't say cause it's a spoiler )
    - A Tale of Thousand Stars (on yt as well. no crime here... oh well a little bit but this one is definitely more on the wholesome side, starts a bit sad tho. rich kid travels to a rural village to become a teacher and fulfill his heart donors last wish but finds also love as well)

    I'm glad you guys are enjoying KP so far. If you continue to explore BL i would definitely recomend trying BLs from other countries. There is a distinct difference between them from storylines, how they are shot, etc. and if you took out the language you can still tell. This is a rough generalisation (and my personal opinion):
    Thailand: Basically the King of BL with a huge range of genres, though sometimes can be more quantity over quality, but many real gems out there. Shows don't tend to have a focus on discovery of queer identity and characters just are. Lots of shows in high school and Uni setting but has dipped toes into pretty much every genre out there. Tend to be longer with 12ish episode 1hr each and lots of product placement. Heat/explicit levels vary depending on the show though Thailand does tend to produce some of the most explicit BLs. (Recs: Not me, Cutie Pie, Until we meet again)
    Korea: Probably the highest standard of production value overall but also most are short series of 6-10 episode only 30mins each. Also don't see product placement much here. Stories tend to focus in schools again and the BL country that is most likely to have storylines about discovery of queer identity and acknowledgement of homophobia though still lots of cute ones. Storylines tend to be "safer" overall with less exploration of genre. KBLs tend to be the most conservative with intimacy and kissing scenes though they have gotten better in recent years. (Recs: Love for Loves Sake, Semantic Error, Eighth Sense)
    Japan: Definitely your go it if looking for mature characters. Lots of JBL feature characters in their mid 20s - late 30s dealing with life in office jobs though there is of course schoolboy ones as well. Solid overall production value but short with most being 6-8 episode of 30 mins each. There is a certain quirk to the humour thats hard to describe but is very distinct. Also heat/explicit levels jump from super chaste to some of the horniest out there. (Recs: Love is better the second time around, Old Fashioned cupcake, Perfect Propose)
    Taiwan: I find it a mix of the three previous countries. Production value is more middling and ranges from 6-20 episode 30 mins each. Queer identity as part of the storyline really depends on the show but Taiwan has a lot more complex storylines in a range of genres (they also like their mafia stuff), family also tends to be a core theme in stories. Heat levels tend to be in the middle but again depends on the show. (Recs: We best love (Both seasons), Kiseki Dear to me, Unknown).

    Arm, Tankhun and Tay are the faves for me~.
    (Arm being the gent in glasses with the guns, he proves to be an amazing friend to Kinn. He also is Tankhun's official bodyguard with Pol. Tay is Kinn's silver haired friend. We love Tay. Tay is a giant green flag. And Tankhun cause he's Tankhun. I also really love Chan, who is the older gentleman who is the leader of the bodyguards. His nickname in the fandom is Daddy Chan. Daddy Chan is perpetually exhausted someone please let him take a nap.)

    If you ever wanted to get into korean BL, “love for love’s sake” storyline is so unique! (Atleast to me) the description with ZEROOO spoilers is about this guy finding himself transported into a video game and his sole mission is to bring happiness to the other main character, or else he’ll die. And he also has to figure out HOW he was transported there and wtf will he do.

    I would like you to meet Kim the youngest and most mysterious character of all..... He even makes his own dad cautious of him. He seems to know even more than Kinn but he doesn't jump in unless there is any kind of benefit for him. But damn he knows his dad's dark side more than anybody else. He is calculative, manipulative and very secretive. Even in the novel Dad believes Kim is the heir that can not only keep the mafia afloat but make it grow. But nothing ever goes against his wish. He is very logical and has firm control over his emotions. Only Tanakhun (eldest son) is aware that he is very nosy unlike others who believe he is just an artist.

    I've been watching bl for around 4 years now, and I don't even give a second thought on how open and apparent everything is, as it's just part of most of the shows, and I love it. I'm really glad that you've chosen to watch bl's and I hope you give other series a chance after this one... as with others saying maybe not the best one to start with (just down to the dark parts) but I did really enjoy watching when it aired. May be get a few bl series names and do a poll on which bl to watch next as I'm sure we all have a few favourites that we would love you to react to

    Story that is not in the series:
    They are a mafia family, each child is born rich and is encouraged to build their own strength, until one day the family was out of control, with a main branch and several secondary branches, until Kinn's father decided to unify everything and he went out killing anyone who didn't agree (uncles and cousins) after several years of unification, the younger brother asked for permission to form the second family and Kinn's father allowed it

    Love to see new people getting into BL :)
    Just a few more facts on BL for you (as someone who studies the genre and Thailand. You can also find a lot of essays on the genre as it has been very seriously studied for the last 5 years or more):
    1- BL rarely say that this or that character is gay, characters are always implied and showed as gay but rarely labelled as one. Regardless of BL popularity and the recent law for same sex marriage, Thailand is still not very open on the subject (the gouvernment sees BL as a way to expand its international influence and as Thailand soft power). BL are not fighting for the LGBTQ+ communty's rights, they're only here for entertainment. Also, BL depict romances between beautiful men (handsomeness is actually one criteria to chose the actors) in a world were the LGBTQ+ community is perfectly respected and accepted. In that way, very few BL show the struggles of coming out or being accepted as who we are
    2- BL are mainly written and thought for a female audience
    3- you rarely see female characters and if you see some they are minor characters with little impact on the plot
    4- Thai acting and story telling is very different from Western norms. Screams, loud shouts, overreacting and overacting is very common

    • @nii_ghtowlz
      @nii_ghtowlz 5 месяцев назад +6

      Regarding the 1st point, I think things have changed quite a bit in the recent years where even local people know about bl and support it (I've seen several thai bl actors talk about it).
      I dont think it's right to say that bl rarely shows LGBTQ+ struggles cuz there's like 100s of them talking about manyyy different topics, even things that might be often overlooked. One thing I've heard from a lot of queer people watching bl content is that they don't want all the stories to talk about the same thing, this is one of the reasons why many queer people are starting to enjoy bls and gls... also there's plenty of shows depicting the fear of coming out. (U can see people talking about this topic in the comment section as well)
      Also being attractive is a criteria to be an actor/actress in most filming industries?? Atleast that's what I've seen in Asian media, idk about the west.
      And yes bls were made for the female audience INITIALLY but the industry is slowly changing and we are seeing so much growth in so less time so let's not stereotype this industry, it will only turn people away.

    22:31 YES! Easily. And it's dangerous. It can be very hard to strangle someone but it also doesn't take long or much to accidently seriously harm someone from strangling them if you are cutting off air and/or blood to the brain.
    It's one of those things that can go very wrong even when someone does it carefully for fun in bed with consent, even if it just play and not hard and not meant as actually strangle them but just simultating it you can still accidently seriously harm someone giving them brain damage or kill them if you push down the wrong way.

    Tankhun is my favourite character, and the actor Tong who plays him is equally awesome. He did some cool educational videos whilst Kinnporsche was airing about sexuality and gender - he also came out shortly after Kinnporsche finished airing at one of the Kinnporsche World Tour stops, which is hella brave of him as there aren't many out actors in the thai bl industry (loads of directors and writers though).
    You mentioned the contrast between seriousness and sitcom energy in the show, and the one thing that I felt held Kinnporsche back for me was the lack of consistency in direction. The show doesn't seem to know if it's a lakorn (thai soap opera), a dark mafia drama or something else sometimes which can work, but at other times it undermines the quality of the show for me.

    • @tofu6573
      @tofu6573 5 месяцев назад +1

      one of the most popular and well known dark mafia drama series is the Yakuza videogame series, which also contrasts between deathly serious stories about topical political and moral events in Japanese society, and funni goofy slapstick. Honestly KPTS handles this balance very well, especially when you realize at the end what the true creeping horror is all about (NO SPOILERS)

    I CANNOT wait for you to see the next episodes. Lol, i remember having my mind blown when I was watching KinnPorsche (and anticipating each new episode).
    And by the way, no, not all BLs are like this that are like, everybody accepts that almost all the characters are queer. But it's one of the reasons why KP is one of the good ones for me. Because as Alex said in the ep 1 reaction, it's a story about mafia and all that other shit, and they all just happen to be queer. (But a staple in most BLs are that - you have to spot which characters are straight, rather than the other way around 😆)
    Also, a good representation here too. Because all the couples are different, their dynamics are very different from each other, so you're gonna see different types of relationship too.
    Oh and the product placement (we call them PPL here in Southeast Asia) for this episode is the bread, yes. Lol.

Otherwise, I commend to your attention Jeff Satur, who plays Kinn and Tankhun's younger brother and will appear more in future episodes. He's an amazing singer and artist, he composed the song for Kinnporsche (Why Don't You Stay) and has been picking up award after award in Thailand lately. You guys are hilarious and this is a great reaction. I can't wait to watch the rest of your kinnporsche reactions. I discovered BL a year ago and have been loving exploring the genre since then. It is a very diverse genre and each country has its own flavor to it. There are also HUNDREDS of BLs out there, so whatever you want to watch gay romance wise, you can find it. It's been a year and I've gotten through 30 so far, still so many to go lol but I am loving the ride. It's so healing as a queer person to just have so much queer romance and this world of love and acceptance I can just escape into when I need it. After you've tackled Thai BL, I recommend exploring japanese BL, which are my personal favorite. Japanese BLs are a lot less bombastic and a lot more restrained than Thai ones. They are grounded and more realistic, have terrific acting, and just have a more artistic and atmospheric feel to them. My absolute favorites are Our Dining Table, My Beautiful Man, End of the World with You, Old Fashion Cupcake, at 25:00 in Akasaka, and the most famous, Cherry Magic. Lots of beautiful yearning and definitely make me cry sometimes.

    I personally like that in Bl´s pretty much everyone is queer and nobody questions anyting because it leaves out the drama and trouble of having to come out to everyone. And when the characters do come out, it usually goes with them coming out and their family being like "Oh, alright. We love you anyways, thanks for telling us." I feel like they save me a lot of anxiety lol. All the drama and story comes from the relationship itself and not the fact that they are queer.
