For those of you thinking about visiting Brazil, remember 3 things: -
1. Don't go on to the beaches at night. Even ones that are safe during the day are mugging hotspots at night.
2. Do not carry any narcotics on you in public. The Brazilian police regularly do stop-and-search on gringos and you will be put in jail and deported if they find you in possession. The Brazilians (including the cops) are welcoming people but you must respect their culture/laws/rules.
3. Do not take anything out with you that you are not willing to lose. If you are the victim of a mugging, surrender everything they ask for on the spot. You genuinely don't know what they are carrying or who else in the vicinity is working with them.
If you do choose to venture at night, maybe 1) Choose to have a cheap second hand phone 2) Carry very little pocket money 3) Leave your wallet at home
So basically avoid that country like fire.

I lived in Rio for several months years ago and only one time had an issue - 2 guys on a quiet beach in the day time started pursuing me (obvious muggers) so I briskly walked to a busy area and they left gave up.
