When I was learning English, it took me about 10-12 years until looking up the definition in English became my first go to. And that was with German to English, which do have quite a few similarities. Nowadays, I don't bother looking things up in German, but it was absolutely unhelpful in the early years of studying, because definitions tend to use concept words and not every-day words, if that makes sense. Yeah. I think it was around 5 or 6 years that I became truly comfortable looking up definitions but even now at 7+ years in, using English for Japanese words is still faster. Though there are some small nuances that don't get brought into them so sometimes I'll only use a JP def or will clarify confusion with it after using Eng. There's another video coming out tomorrow about using Google images for looking up words too, which is a nuts strat 👀
It can definitely help, Japanese subtitles will be very helpful to help you pick up new words and make comprehending easier. If you did Eng subtitles, that can be helpful for more passive listening training. Both are good and I would say do what your brain can a handle at the moment^^ I’ll have to make a video on this soon haha
I don't understand, you tell us to stop using Japanese definitions... (I wasn't anyway lol) but then show us an example where it was useful? If anything I wasn't using Japanese definitions and now I think it's more useful than I did before...
The basic summary is don’t use them 24/7 because it’s too time consuming and learning how to read dictionaries won’t be as helpful to your fluency as doing other more productive things. But if you’re really stuck on the difference of two words that seem to be the same, a JP definition could be the solution^^

@@tystake ah, gotcha I wonder though about making your own Japanese translations, as a way to build connection to other words you do know.
