  • In this short series of videos I take a look at the Dyno My Piano sound and try to recreate that sound.
In this part I start the journey, by looking at Dyno My Piano.
I really enjoy the Dyno My Piano story and think they play an important part history of the Fender Rhodes. I enjoy the direction they took and the sound they created, I find it inspiration for creating my own piano sound.
I am not affiliated with the Dyno My Piano facebook page, but I am looking forward to more updates at this page, do give it a follow, I am sure the information posted will be interesting and may help me recreate the Dyno My Piano sound.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there on Dyno My Piano, I would love to learn more about it, so it you have any information, please do get in touch. I would really like to know what was in Dyno My Piano training.

This sound is so well known. I've had different romplers that had a DynoEP patch, later on I learnt about the origin of these sounds.

I've owned a Dyno My Piano deluxe mod version I got from original owner that was ordered new right from Chuck Monte in the early 80s. The sound was not for me...far too eq'd of a bright late 70s early 80s yacht rock sound, but that was the trend then. I find they are over rated...more of a mystique driven by the rarity. it lost the traditional 70s rhodes sound and feel (which is what I was after and knew nothing about dyno my piano then, just wanted a rhodes and that is what came up for sale in my area). I bypassed the preamp and the 70s tone came back. The bulk of the dyno sound comes from the preamp eq. Sure it was setup well, but not much different than any other well setup rhodes I have played since (I have had about a dozen rhodes over the years).
I also got a Tri Stereo Chorus rack version from the same guy, which he also bought from Dyno at the same time, which gave a swimming panned chorus sound, most noted by it's use by 80s guitarists. Those were all made in japan by Songbird so not a true Dyno product, was just rebranding by them, made by Songbird, same thing. Again not for me, tried it on guitar too. I'm just not into the glossy plastic 80s sound. I sold both dyno pieces not long after and have not regretted it. I think most people into rhodes want the traditional 70s tone, not a slick glossy 80s version of it. You can basically get a dyno tone just by sending your rhodes thru a wide range EQ and decent multi chorus effect.

Hi RocknJazzer. I 100% agree that the 70s sound is the important sound to get from a Rhodes Piano. And the Dyno sound can drift closer to a DX7 as you apply effects.
Maybe I am little greedy, but I want to get as may sounds from piano as possible but to also understand how to make them.
Do like the Dyno my Piano story and branding and the idea of being able to switch on or off that sound.
The next couple of parts of this series are coming out very soon, so I would to know what you think of the sound I achieve and how it compares to what you had. Don't worry I am only doing temp adjustments to my piano.
Out of interest do you still have a electric piano and if so what is your setup?

@@deancoyle Yes I have a couple of late 70s rhodes left, one stage and one suitcase. I bypass all the rhodes electronics and go DI, then process later w/ eq or reamp w tube preamps or guitar amps, pedals, etc

I do tend to record straight from the harp. Do you use anything special for the DI?

@@deancoyle I use various DI's and mic preamps with instrument inputs. The most important thing when going DI off the harp is the input impedance of what you are plugging it into.

@@RocknJazzercan you share what the correct input impedance of the preamp or DI has to be?
