@Andy Salter "I don't get it, so they buy a DVD, and get some music on the side?" "No as a band your strength is the music. People are gonna buy it for the music." "So what's this talk about DVDs, like we're gonna make a movie?" "No you could put anything on it, videos, live rehearsals" "Well that's just ridiculous!" This could've been a scene in Spinal Tap
I'm surprised that the music industry never tried switching from CD's to DVD's as the norm. There's so much you can do on that, and now Blu-rays too, that replicates the experience of CD's and even back when vinyl was in it's heyday, tenfold. It is also much harder to burn a DVD for filesharing that CDs are.
I love that they did a live studio performance of the entire album, which is just a great way to see how a band plays on their own. Besides, you get like another version of the album and kind of a preview to what they would do live. Was it an extra incentive to buy the album?... Sure. - I'd have bought it without the DVD, but I definitely felt it was an extra treat. - But these days, people wouldn't care, especially the newer generation, since everyone knows it will end up on the internet in one way or another. - There are still plenty of people that like to buy physical, but it's a dying generation. - We're 18 years on now and, while at times they still include like a DVD with extras, it's just not that interesting anymore and artists will often throw everything up on RUclips themselves now. I will say that one trend I hated was these bands (often symphonic ones) that would throw in an entire second CD with "instrumentals", but it was often literally just the same CD with the vocals removed and no extra or alternate arrangements or anything. I felt that was a very cheap way to give people extras and a waste of plastic as well. - What point does that serve?... Singers who want to do karaoke?... I mean, I sing and I don't even care, I just want to hear the full thing if I do listen to the album. - And sometimes they would throw in a track that just has the background-orchestration and it would sound very empty. - Just what?... - If they wanted to give extra content, they should've made new songs or arrangements or something. It used to be that singles and EPs and such would get some "B-side" tracks or covers, which usually wouldn't be that great, but at least that would make it somewhat interesting. - Anyway...
0:05 the guy's like "It's never too early to talk business!" and James is like *poof I'm outta here* 0:32 Band and guy are like "I can't believe people are downloading all the music for free!" And Lars is like "Is there anybody... like, standing up fo- nah..." Nice little jab at Napster :D
Also why they didn't have solos in the songs on St Anger because it wasn't the trend at the time and Kirk said: "If we do what's trendy now it won't be timeless" and he was right.
It's crazy that we've come right around to where a physical product with the music on it is now considered merchandise, particularly with vinyl. People will pay extra+shipping to have even a shitty cassette with a paper inlay for something to put on a shelf, if you include a download code. You can be almost certain they don't even have a cassette deck.
And here we are in 2023 where new bands are lucky to make a living off of playing music, all because of the internet. Atleast if I buy a cd or vinyl copy I have the artwork, and my favourite band will get some money. Support your favourite artists.
2000’s were so weird. The music industry was so behind. People didn’t want the physical copy anymore, but record labels were obsessed with physical sales. Record labels were getting eaten alive by people, and now today people are starting to independently stream music.
"This is just plain silly" - James Hetfield Fast forward to 2020 with the deluxe S&M 2 box set which is a 299 dollar DVD with a CD and a bunch of other stuff shoved in.
Yep, a genuine token or whatever for a general admission concert ticket is the only thing that would work. Give em a general admission ticket, they will probably bring a friend, make it back in merch and the other sale.
And the more funny part is they spoken about the price and when they make the Napster theme and the guy show some ideas is not the manager Metallica right now sucks 🤮
They should have put it in a brown paper bag...that way around Halloween , you could knock on your neighbors door , drop the bag and run off and hide in the bushes and watch em stomp on it😁
I don't understand why people don't like to have the object anymore (CD, tape, lp, booklet...) Ah yes it's true, they want music for free. But to record new songs it's not free at all...
Don't do all the songs the same on all the CDs It'll be like bootleg production CDs that everybody will trade That way if you're recording and the studio wants you to do it a certain way They'll get their way You'll get your way and each individual will get their way And you'll have like 6 or 7 different versions of each song
I will be hard to sell that album. Because it is the worst album they had. Just write great songs. And people will gladly give you money. That is how it always worked. No need for dvd, stickers, etc2.
Hate to burst that little bubble you live in, but that's NOT how it works. Can't know if it's crap until you buy it, so packaging is more important that the final product from a business standpoint.
@@MrParkerman6 for music, i disagree. Remember when they were starting? They made great music and people willing to listen by just demo tape. For demo, Packaging is bad right? But why that tape reach to europe then? Because the music is brilliant.

lmao
He really didn’t want to talk about packaging. Poof!
aliens
He even wrote a song about it.
He was never there
Is this the only scene where Lars isn’t eating a sandwich?
Because they are talking about something he's very very very serious about.... file sharing
I'm sure is thinking about to eat one
And making others feel sick while he's scoffing his face.
LMAO
SIX TIMES! I SHOT HIM SIX TIMES!
Oddly enough, the DVD of the album sounds much, much better than the CD version.
I agree. I burned the audio to a CD and listened to that.
yeah i feel like this guy should have won an award just for making (successfully, at that, seeing as they did it) this suggestion
Correct!
DonteKeys the dvd has rob playing the bass, not bob
Jaymz 27 me too
Jesus! This feels just like a skit out of spinal tap
The whole documentary feels like a real life twist of Spinal tap.

Lol it does have that vibe like that scene where they are discussing the offensiveness of “Smell the glove”.
Metallica IS spinal tap on so many levels I love it
Who would’ve thought vinyls would outlive CDs.
huh? CD's still exist, heh. Vinyls made a little comeback due to the retro nostalgia. That's all.
@@SwagGuffington I buy CD’s on eBay all the time.
The DVD of them playing all the songs live in their rehearsal space sounds better than the actual album.
Yea, I think one reason is it has rob playing bass on the dvd, the cd is all bob rock’s playing
Rob Trujillo also hadn’t joined the band yet.
@@andrewmachado6988 He had already joined the band, but Bob Rock basically convinced them to let him play bass instead because he knew all the songs.

Wrong! Dumbass! Rob didn't join until St. Anger was completely finished. The Some kinda monster doc. Shows it, dumbass.
I always liked the dvd that was included, the whole album preformed in studio. Wish other bands did that.
The only other band I know that did that was foo fighters on wasting light album.
In Flames did that too

Battle Cat Data doesn’t have a goatee, fuckhead.

Jumpy Cat You’ll never stop being a racist dickhead. I know you.
best drink coaster i ever bought!
They should have wrapped the CD in aluminum foil wrapping to be faithful to the snare sound on the album.
And should have drop it in the bin to be even more loyal to the drums sound
There’s always that one dude “we gotta hop on the wave that the young ones are on “

Strangely enough for "Hardwired To Self-Destruct" they made a video for every single song.

Stuart Otis what
I’m a seagull. I’m really only into free fish sharing when I’m hungry. Lol
I would purchase the band playing live in studio.
