Shropshire Lad cooking a whole leg of lamb, anchovy and lamb fat foccacia bread and roasted root vegetables at the footplate of Tornado, a 100 mph steam locomotive. Is this the fastest, hottest oven on earth? We think it could be!

Will you be showcasing or appearing at the Ludlow food festival this year? I think your style of cooking is awesome and really inspired me to get cooking
Ahhh thanks, that makes me really happy to hear. Yeah I'll be at Ludlow in September this year
That’s great. I can’t wait. Beautiful part of the world too 😊
The driver and fireman used to and still put bacon, sausages and or egg in a steam locomotive for their breakfast before they worked!
Puts my bacon and egg sarnie I cooked yesterday to shame. Although we did cook a full Christmas dinner on our loco a few years back. Did the roasties in the smokebox whilst we were running and they were to die for.
Dude, I can't imagine how hard it must be to cook anything whilst it's running. Heat is off the scale, fair play!
@@shropshirelad8036 We only use a small tank engine on a short demonstration line. Nothing like the heat you would get in Tornado's firebox. Yet, even on our engine, cooking in the firebox whilst running would be impossible . The draft through the fire would suck everything off of your pan/shovel before it had a chance to burn.
However, the smokebox at the front of the engine where the ash collects is a lot cooler. Judging how long our potatoes took to cook my guess is around 150c when running. You do need to wrap everything in plenty of tinfoil to keep it clean but it's great for slow roasting. The warming plate above the fire door (where you put your onions when you took them out of the fire) is great for warming through things like pies (or for our Christmas dinner, the gravy) and when we stopped for a while we could fry the pigs-in-blankets on the shovel in the firebox.
I have heard stories of people baking cakes in the smokebox, although I can't make any comment on how they turned out.
Interesting, I assume that steam coal and the fact it was fully burnt out and just embers made it possible as I understand burning coals result in bitter and sulfurous food.
Genius! This deserves a lot more attention
Surely they shovel industrial coal into that thing! Is ok to cook with?
Flying Scotsman im a better cook than you!
