  • In this video, one woman tells us what happened when she realized she hated her new job immediately, and what she did to find a new position ASAP.
    Based on an article by Bree Rody
    Through weekly video essays, "Making It Work" showcases how real people have upgraded their personal or financial lives in some meaningful way. Making your life work for you doesn't mean getting rich just for the sake of it. It means making the most of what you have to build a life you love, both in your present and in your future. And while managing money is a crucial life skill for everyone, there's no one "right way" to go about it - you have to figure out what works best for you, full stop.

    I want all young people to know that it's okay to leave a job if it doesn't feel right. There is no virtue in 'sticking it out'. I left what I thought was my dream job after 3 weeks. Then I realised my predecessor had only lasted 3 weeks as well. See the pattern? There is no shame in leaving something that is wrong.

      I agree, there is no reason to stick around in the long run in miserable permeant job, that will only result in a burnt out and all the consequences that then will follow. If its a temporary job then I can see an argument why someone should "stick it out" as it has known end date, where it will expire. But I feel it also depends the length of contract and how far someone is into the contract. IF its its the early days and the job feels miserable and no way to shake the feeling the best course of action I think would be to get the contract cancelled. If Its somewhere in the middle of the road it probably depends on if the situation can be improved or not. If its in the final days then its probably best to complete it

    It's an OK video, but I''d like to ask the author one question: how exactly did they find the time to: sustain their regular job, do the side hustle, learn new skills, do freelancing, learn to code, brush up on foreign languages, all the same time? Does she find the time to sleep or go to the loo? I am okay with this video's main idea (don't resign yourself), but I wouldn't want the young people starting their career to get the wrong idea and have unrealistic expectations about their mind & body'd capacity. We have to be rational and have realistic goals. It's not healthy to watch this video and expect to be able to do all these things at the same time. It would burn you out in less than 6 months.

      Agreed. Honestly, I relate a lot to this video - but it's landed me in burn out city. My career has developed, but I am struggling to have better work-life balance and to create healthier boundaries.
      I think when you get used to juggling a million things it's hard to know how to put on the brakes. Usually, I go to financial diet for the kind of advice that is grounded, realistic and promotes a healthy balance but this didn't really feel on brand to me. I know it's this author's experience, and I commend her for knowing how to remove herself from a bad situation but it feels like it glorifies that hustle a bit too much.

      I’m wondering if the dance teaching, coding and languages were more hobbies than a plan to get a new job, but it made a better narrative this way. That way she might have felt relaxed during this time, and focused on the freelancing as her extra “hustle”. She mentions the job was really easy and was left alone, so she might have had more energy than being in a really tough job. I can’t remember if she mentions if she was living on her own or not, if she didn’t have housework to do or bills to worry about it would be easier. Not to take away from her achievements at all! It’s amazing what she accomplished - just don’t compare your own situation and beat yourself up.

      Hi! I'm the author of this piece. Yes, it WAS pretty terrible, but it was so much higher than what I'd lived on for two years, so I was pretty OK with it because I knew how to live on much less. Plus, when I took my first job in Toronto, I was stupid enough to get a place right downtown, a two-bedroom for $1780 (split with a roommate). This was pretty above average for 2012. But when I took this job I rented a two-bedroom in Scarborough for $1050 all in (also split with a roommate). It had a lot of disadvantages (I had to rely on my car to get around and I had NO SOCIAL LIFE). Nevertheless, I managed to "live within my means" during that time, but I'm in a more comfortable position now. Thanks for the comment though - I don't think people realize how hard it is in this field.

    This is a great video, but I just have to say - I am baffled that this young, bright, and talented young person thinks 31k USD is an acceptable salary for their experience level and education. I am currently 2 years out of undergrad with an English B.A. and I work in communications (I get to write and do creative work all day). I bring in about 70k a year and I side-hustle maybe 5-10 hours a month on top of my 40hr a week job, and I live in a low cost of living city. Please know that I’m not commenting on this to brag but to be transparent. I believe young creatives, particularly women, need to know their value and stop settling for less. It is criminal how underpaid and undervalued the millennial and Gen Z generations are.

      Love this! Thank you for sharing, I see this as an encouragement and not at all a brag. You didn't have to put this out there but you did and sometimes when you're coming from a low income background, it's hard to know what the possibilities could look like, so you do end up settling. More transparency about this kind of thing can only help, when ignorance leads to exploitation.

    • @IAmPattycakes
      @IAmPattycakes 4 года назад +3

      Does the 70k include the side hustle? There's very little entry level to 2 years of experience jobs in this low cost city that pay that much, let alone with just an English B.A. It's pretty much just engineering and coding. I'm only making like 57k USD I think in one of those fields, but scheduled for a promotion to catch up with those mid range salaries.

    • @catmaylie27
      @catmaylie27 4 года назад +8

      IAmPattycakes good question. my base salary at my 9-5 is just under 68k. I can’t speak for every situation, city, and field, but in my personal experience, the trick was knowing my value and having the confidence to counter off a salary. My first job out of college offered me 36k - which is a fine salary, but I didn’t even consider counter-offering. I was so desperate for work and believed that I had shot myself in the foot for getting an English degree that I just felt lucky to get paid.

    Today is actually the 3 year anniversary of when I started my job... and it HATE it! It’s the first job I accepted after college and was desperate for anything. It was supposed to be temporary and a “stepping stone”... then I happened to be there at the right time when they raised the minimum wage for the company to $15 (I was making $11.50 before) 3 months after I started. Then last year they raised it again to $18. Now I’m making $18.35/hour and have great benefits, which I’m very thankful for, but I know I can do more than be a bank teller... I have a damn bachelors degree!!! My low self esteem and the pay are what kept me around, but I’m at my breaking point.

    There are many gurus who tell you that you shouldn't hate what you do. But does hating your job actually hurt your other planes in the physical, emotional and spiritual realm? As I told my own subscribers--yes it does. If you despise going to work that is eight hours of your day you are unhappy. Plus the getting up in the morning for it and getting back home is another two hours. Which would mean most of your day, most days of the week, most of your life--you hate doing what you do. This will affect the emotional plane and lead to the midlife crisis earlier than expected. It will drain your energy and then guess what? You stop taking care of your physical plane as well. Then your spiritual plane will fail as you see yourself as just another insignificant cog in the universe. So if that life in the high suburbs is destroying your planes my suggestion is to either laterally change careers or downsize so you can at least be content in what you do---most of your time. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles

    I had a similar experience to this...had bad vibes from the interview but accepted the position anyway because I was desperate for a job. I’m sure that if I hustled in the same way this person did to find a new company I could have absolutely done that and succeeded. But at that point the effects of capitalism got me. Experienced extreme burn out and had to quit working altogether to recoup my poor mental health. Now I’m realizing that entire career wasn’t for me (advertising) and I’m pursuing becoming an electrician instead!

I was the only technician and only female, and I had to film 30 minutes of 3 white dudes « debating » feminism and saying how they felt like it was going way too far and women were over sensitive about those issues 🤦🏻‍♀️ I couldn’t say anything since I was « only the technician » and the youngest... But I was facepalming internally the whole time.

      I've always had mixed feelings about feminism, or at least what it has become. On one hand I agree with its goals of ending harassment, assault, and abuse both at home and in the workplace. On the other hand I feel as though the method the movement is using has degenerated into a mob rule in which people care more about being an ally than having their own opinion. It's sexist to question anything women say and I don't believe that is true feminism which should be inclusive of ideas from both genders.

    • @Naabeille
      @Naabeille 4 года назад +12

      Jacob Greenstone To be clear I wasn’t saying men shouldn’t be part of the discussion and that their opinion doesn’t matter. But having a public discussion about feminism without bothering having a women there, to me it shows that they didn’t even want to try to understand a woman’s perspective on those issues. And debating feminism in the workplace... that’s just not a good work environment. Because a woman is working in a male environment doesn’t mean she wants to regularly debate feminism at work (it’s just not the place for that). And with your boss, it just can’t be a good debate since if you disagree you might just not say it in fear of the repercussions it might have. I don’t know how she felt when this happened, but I know I would have felt very uncomfortable.

    • @jacobg8640
      @jacobg8640 4 года назад +2

      @@Naabeille I know you weren't saying that. And I agree. Women's opinions are just as important to the discussion as men's. Why anything political even has to be discussed in the workplace all the time is already a big red flag to me. Most companies just do it for corporate branding anyway. No one really wants to have a discussion.
      And I completely understand not wanting to disagree with your superiors. I've worked in an overly leftist university office where all they ever did was call conservatives racists and assumed I had opinions that I don't. Which really hurt because it implied I didn't care for some of my best friends. But those people were also responsible for me receiving a scholarship for school each year, so I felt helpless in that situation and hated that job. Censorship sucks no matter which side does it.
      I don't understand why people think it's okay to just assume all your subordinates agree with your opinion left or right. I just want my paycheck. If I wanted a political discussion, I'd join a debate club or go on the internet.

    Jk, I don’t live in Toronto, but I basically got stuck in a very similar situation - you described it almost *exactly* to the letter. It took me 18 months to get out because for a year after taking this job, I fell into the cycle of beating myself down about it (also because as soon as I finally mustered the guts to leave, COVID hit and my area locked down). My self esteem took a huge hit and I really started to doubt myself, but I finally realized that job wasn’t a reflection on me as a person and I followed almost the exact same steps/growth process as described in this video.
    I ended up interviewing for a company earlier this year, and the position was too senior for me, but I really impressed during my interview. Six months later, as the lockdown ended, a hiring manager from another department reached out and told me the team was so impressed by my interview that they thought I’d be perfect for another position that just opened up.
