I haven’t seen a bad word said against the SN0144 yet, I’m definitely picking one up in 11/11 sale. I’m glad you mentioned the 36mm, this will probably be the one for me personally. I also see a new no-date 39mm version with a Miyota 9039. The established brands had better be watching San Martin. They are asking a lot of awkward questions of watches costing 10X more

In many instances, I would agree with you -- but not this one. Utility or Beauty? Why settle for one when you can have both? In my view the best designs are a marriage of both. By way of example, anOrdain offers some amazing watch dials with minimal text, but cost thousands of dollars. Venizianico offers several dials with hands only, but use an NH35 and cost way more than San Martin. Much like the Erebus watches, the date complication is perfectly placed at the six o'clock position and does not detract from the beautiful dial -- at least for me. Anyway, San Martin will probably offer a no-date version soon, so we will both be pleased.
