    In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at the new forms of denial corporations use to hinder and block climate action. Specifically, the video examines how fossil fuel companies employ a dense network of actors at every level of society to ingrain a fossil fuel ideology that asserts that oil and gas are essential to the functioning of the global economy and the well-being of everyone.

      There is a massive energy transition currently underway.
      The new technologies that are replacing fossil fuels bring a wide range of new possibilities in how energy is generated, moved around and distributed. This enables a complete reimagining of what an electrical grid is and what the energy system is.
      It is very important to have citizen advocates participate in these developments. Otherwise, existing vested interests will dominate and stifle many possibilities to change things for the better.

    Man...the part where you talked about people telling you to decrease your footprint or "Do your little part!" resonated with me, because it just happened yesterday.
    I was talking to my cousin, (who is a landlord) about how its messed up how so many corporations (like Aldi) profit by purposefully making sure they are understaffed, unwilling to pay a few more people to make sure that the employees can work more efficiently and not have to stretch themselves so thin.
    How messed up it is that so much wealth is owned by so few people. But he handwaved what I said saying stuff like "The people who have all the money had a good idea! or What are YOU doing?"
    Then he suggested that I focus on doing my little art in my community, helping out at homeless shelters or mentoring someone.
    And like, those are GOOD things (I think? Mentoring someone always sounds like a scam to me.)
    We were in a moving truck at the time I accidentally messed up the door (that was already worn down), but I didn't know how to fix it so I left it how it was.
    Then he said "HA! YOU CARE ABOUT PEOPLE SO MUCH YET YOUR GONNA LEAVE THE DOOR LIKE THAT FOR THE NEXT PERSON." Its like....WHAT, this is something completely different than what we were talking about, your gonna take this ONE THIN and say that means I don't actually care about people being taken advantage of and the world?
    It just seems like this whole ploy to guilt trip us out of doing something bigger, saying we are actually the selfish ones. Telling us to do small things so they can keep BOOMING and growing.
    But what I mean is, I'm talking about how we need to change the system on a large scale, not just doing small individual things, because this problem is so much bigger than us.
    I'm talking organization and galvanizing.
    Like seriously, what if everyone decided to just NOT show up to work, and demanded better treatment. Pooling our money and sharing so we don't all starve?
    But people are more separate than ever, even now I'm in my room. But I think today I'm gonna go to the library and talk to someone.

    It's important to recognize that our reliance on fossil fuels is deeply entrenched in our way of life, and many of us are hesitant to envision a future without them due to concerns about our quality of life. However, solely blaming corporations and executives overlooks broader issues such as overshoot and the need for degrowth. While there are undoubtedly corrupt individuals in positions of power, simply removing them won't solve systemic problems. Instead, we must acknowledge the role of greed in human nature and work towards creating structures and incentives that mitigate its negative effects. Waiting for political action alone won't suffice; we must take individual and collective responsibility to address these issues while also ensuring access to essential services like air conditioning and healthcare. It's time to move beyond scapegoating and engage in meaningful action to create a more sustainable and equitable future.

    • @Encephalitisify
      @Encephalitisify Месяц назад

      The idea that you have that we must use oil for everything is exactly the entrenched brainwashing that the video is talking about. Using petroleum for plastics is not the issue. It’s combustion of fossil fuels. It’s not a none or all.

    • @balistowo
      @balistowo Месяц назад +2

      I agree, we must absolutely guarantee all essential services, they're essential after all. It's in the bloody name, it's outrageous how many are locked behind paywalls.
      I would want to correct your assumption about human nature though. Sure, some philosophers thought that greed is in the people's nature, but this entirely misses what was actually the case.
      If greed were in human nature, how would humans have survived as hunters and gatherers? How would we have become sedentary? If there was actually greed in human nature, we wouldn't exist. People would've fought over everything in their own tribes, eradicating all but themselves in the process. Sure, some people are greedy and selfish, I'm not denying that, it's just that those were the few rather than the many.
      The underlying reason why we're so much greedier today is our economic system which is literally based on that. If the incentivised way to a good life is greed, of course people will be greedy. Big corporations have gotten this bad exactly because of this. To maximise profits, you must keep the profit margin as high as possible, which is best done by only producing in the minimum acceptable quality and paying the workers the minimum acceptable amount while keeping the price of the product at the maximum acceptable level. You must act greedily, you must value the consumers as well as your workers merely as tools for your own gain.
      Yes, just removing the corporate leaders won't solve systematic problems if the system itself is flawed. It's important to recognise that this system is deeply entrenched in our way of life, and many of us are hesitant to criticise it due to thinking there's no alternative.
      If the driving force for the economy simply wasn't greed and the accumulation of wealth but rather human well-being, greed would naturally disappear because there wouldn't be any incentive to be greedy. You'd have to recognise your fellow humans as humans.
      If you want me to, I'll leave you some resources on this topic to check out, you're already on the right track! You've noticed the underlying issue, all you'd need is a coherent model for what to do next. Controlling greed isn't that.

Just because it wasn't able to create the degree of environmental damage that it can do now with mega corporations doesn't mean that it didn't always exist in the past. And if anything the kind of people who are usually driven by greed if not power itself, are likely to take advantage of a socialist system that you want to implement and alter it for their own personal gain as well.

    The more i learn about the power grid, the more i realize that modern nuclear energy options is our best option. Small form reactors, LFTRs, Thorium Reactors, molten salt reactors. Utilizing our advanced technology, Improved engineering & material science. Utilizing our greater understanding of safety & well made designs. We have so much more advanced computer technology & robotics that can be used. It feels like even tho tons of advancement has occurred with engineering designs, safety measures, etc. It still doesn't matter to most people. It's like most people are ingrained with a natural negative response when talking about nuclear energy. It's a bummer because i truly believe that our best option for our future is to start utilizing Modern advanced nuclear energy options in our electrical grid. It's just proving to be challenging to get politicians to get on board.
    It will really allow places to be much more energy independent. Less reliant on fossil fuels. They'll have efficient, stable electrical grids and the rest of the grid could experiment with alternative power sources, power desalination plants, etc.
    We need to heal from the trauma of our past. See & learn that those things only happened solely from Us not understanding what we were doing when it came to nuclear energy at the time. We didn't have advanced enough technology, material science, engineering, safety measures, understanding of how to go about everything, etc. This source of energy will greatly help the world improve towards the future and lowering emissions. More than anything else could, while also providing a very stable electrical grid system. Currently we have alternative energy options but the majority of our grid is powered off of fossil fuels and emission producing sources of energy. We will be so much better going forward commiting to modern advanced nuclear energy options.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    One of the most annoying things is how our society has taken a "Change is up to You!" approach. When I reality, it just plays with people's emotions. They feel guilty. They want to make a change, but this individual approach is not going to work. This issue is so much bigger than individual people. We need countries/states/corporations to get on board with this! It's the only way even the Slightest differences can be made. We've already waited too long. Everyday is a day wasted that we aren't committed to modern nuclear energy options. It should be utilized in collaboration with other alternative energy sources all over the place. Especially with our advancements around safety measures. We've seen vast improvements in engineering, material science, technology, robotics, etc. They are all much more advanced now. This power source is the best option to improve our environment & will really help lower our emissions. The only things holding us back is legislation, fear mongering & past trauma that's affected us from our past (which is understandable but we really gotta give it a chance to see if it can prove it has progressed & improved)
    I the past did they outlaw electricity, oil, or coal if things went wrong in the early days of those fields? No! They kept going cause they understood things can be bumpy and difficult in the beginning. Still to this day we've stuck with these energy sources even tho there's been a lot of negative impact on our environment.
    A huge issue is that our government is BLOCKING any sort of progression from happening. We'd be lucky to see the slightest projects approved or finished with-in the next 100 years.. It's very annoying to see how much we have gotten in our own way when it comes to improving or advancing certain things. Instead we let fear, money, man made "required legal processes" Stop us from doing anything other than wind, solar, oil, natural gas, damming our rivers, mining for minerals... It's very frustrating because we should be able to use all these options in collaboration. If we actually wanted to improve anything. That's what we need to do and stop letting so much potential get blocked from ever occurring in the first place.. It's really irritating. I wish certain people didn't make this so "complicated and difficult" Why would any reasonable person want to block progression?
      A few things, small reactors are simply not cost effective and they are really the only way to roll out nuclear on a timescale that is useful. The other main issue is nuclear requires a stable society to work, look at all the scares we have had in Ukraine. The next decades will be anything but stable. That said given the age of the nuclear fleet it would be extremely hard to double our plants in 50 years which would still mean it would be a minority of the energy provided through the grid. Given the opposition to nuclear and that it can't scale to be anything substantial there is no need to focus on it.
You can be a vegetarian, or cut out red meat, or only eat meat one day a week, and that's still a large, tangible improvement for most people who do eat meat. Removing meat from your diet, in whole or in part, is the easiest, safest, most practical way for an individual person with no outside help or support network to reduce environmental impact. It's good for animals, and it's good for you (most people in developed nations eat too much meat, and our health suffers for it). Even if you have no intention of making reduced meat consumption a permanent lifestyle change, try it for a week or a month and see how you feel about it.     Hi there. You are focusing on the LEAVES when you should be focusing on the ROOTS.
    The Symptoms are bad and should be ignored, but addressing those symptoms instead of removing the cancer is as much of a waste of time as it is using a bucket to prevent a sinking boat to go under instead of fixing the hole in the hull.
    Haven’t even watched the video yet, but of course the answer is YES! Our politicians need to stand up to the corporations but our great democracy is bought and paid for by the corporations. How are we a free country if corporations get more help from the government then we do…..?
    We need to empower visionary leaders to step up and become a rallying beacon for those who share in this understanding. Solidarity is everything!
    Also, when it comes to pollution or waste from like by-products that we have now. I think we can focus on repurposing plastic pollution into other things that we could use. So in other words, have a form of recreating. Or repurposing or using plastics and other things. There are easy to repurpose without creating harmful emissions.
    We've had a great exemple of criminlization of eco activist here in France last year with our police minister sending an army of policemen to protect an agricultural project privatising underground water. It was one of the most violence in a manifestation we've seen with the police being very trigger happy. After the fact the minister then talked of eco-terrorist pointed to the eco-activist background of the young people that were between life and death because of the police. Then he dismantled the main militant organisation behind the protest. I mean it's transparent at this point.
    Yes we do have an alternative.
    It’s called nuclear.
    Select regions can try geothermal.
    So I want to post several comments relating to this topic. And before I get started, I want to say that I do my very best to preserve what I can with what I have when it comes to the benefit of mother Earth.
    Things like this make think that maybe the only way to beat this is to have a source of global capital power that actively works against oil the same way that oil works against climate change addressing measures.
    I get that capital doesn't care about human cost - but why is it so short sighted? If all humans go extinct in 2050, you will show absolutely zero profit in 2100. A model that can sustain sales for sixty years is probably going to produce more than one that burns out in six months. Suffering an explosion at a refinery drops production (and thus profit) to nothing, so safety is an investment in future returns - yet safety and workers seems to be the first thing to get cut.
