just noticed I commented here a year ago ... btw Im pretty sure the original edge and low pros were not meant to be set up flush to the guitar bodies like that. To sit them truly parallel means that the bridge should have a slanted edge that isn't flush with the guitar body. it's how they are designed...might be why you were having issues setting it up because essentially you set it up with a backwards leaning tilt to the bridge.
Absolutely correct. Ibanez has a guide on how their 1000 diff model bridges should float in the manual -- they have a nice graphic that shows all of them. From what I remember, the only one that is supposed to sit flush / parallel to the body of the guitar is the Edge Pro. The original edge and lo-pro need to be angled. All of them though, should have guide lines on the sides so you can line them up.
Thanks for the tip about not adjusting the bridge height with all the strings on. That makes a lot of sense and I (nor any people I've learned about Floyds from) never considered it, I will definitely keep it in mind.
If you set the trem angle correct, that is the underside of it parallell with the body, the radius is better also. This will result in the trem arm being closer to the body/knobs. You can see it on the underside too, the block with the springs on it is not centered in its hole (and is not perpendicular to the strings). Not meant as negative critique, just a tip on these trems. And you are right, these trems are a pain to intonate, but just stick to the same gauge (and make) strings as when first set up, and you are fine. I guess this guitar would take .11 strings just fine, it would just mean you would have to tune it down quite a bit. I like my .09 setup as it allows for some easier bending and "adjustment" while playing. The Ibanez ZR bridge is quite genious by the way, with ball bearings instead of "knives" and better (threaded) intonation adjustment. Don`t know if you have encountered that one yet.
my friend had one of these in natural finish.. it was set up real nice and man id loved it .. the neck was soo flat you could play anything super fast. I think he had an RG1000 or something like that
a note on installing string ball end through the tuners with a floyd. If you clamp the string end in the trem and wind w/ the ball end it gives you some string to work with in case of breakage at the bridge, just unwind the string, reclamp at the bridge, and retune.
You are absolutely right about the gauge of strings. But if you could get stiffer springs from Japan to suit 9which you can), and set your bridge so the end of vibrato bar sits exactly 5 cm off the body and make sure that knife edge is parallel to string you would be ok. This will dramatically improve both the string action height and playbility of the instrument. I haven't met a bad Japanese Ibanez, only bad setups
I've got 3 Ibanez RG's all pre AANJ. I'd say your comment is a little misinformed. That's OK as you probably favor another brand. It would be like me saying that there is no high end Fenders. Or no high end Gibsons. Or no high end anything for that matter. It seems a little daft don't you think.
I have a 15 year old Aria Pro II six string bass and it's solid as a rock. I just had to get it re-fretted. It plays like a dream and has a solid, great tone. Pretty natural finish too :)
I just bought this exact guitar off of the owner who brought it to this guy. The reason the strings choked out is because the trem was set way too far back. More than likely because of the added spring/claw height. I own several RGs, one essentially identical to this, and have had no problems with them, nor have i ever needed to level, dress, and/or crown frets. Its all about trem angle and the right relief in the neck
I have 11 gauge strings on my rgt42dxblk. I have 4 springs. The ibanez owner's manual stated the holes used to attach the spring retainer on the tremolo block could be used to install additional springs. The manual also recommends using 9 gauge strings. It stays in tune better with the heavier strings.
I know right! The posts are supposed to be cranked down a lot lower as well to compensate, it's one of the peculiarities that only applies to some (edge, lo-pro edge, edge III, edge zero and edge zero II) of the Ibanez branded trem systems. As it is set now the knife edges are contacting the posts at about 100-105 degrees instead of the ideal 90.
11-48 actually work really good on these Guitars especially if you put in the Edge-Zero II bridge w/ZPS3Fe that has a tension adjusting finger nut!! I have never seen anybody string a guitar like that before but to each their own.. I found that, lightly filling a fret can make your life a lot better when you can not get your clearance quite the way you want it!! Thanks 4 sharing.
A couple of Ibanez's I've encountered have have a metal roller poking through the whammy's cover plate, presumably for tension adjustment. I think it's brilliant!
You are correct. Back in the day Ibanez recommended that their tremolos be set up that way. But you can also set the tremolo up exactly the way he did and it'll play fine. Newer Ibanez guitars come out the box set up parallel not angled. So its a matter of taste. Mine are all parallel except for two. They have a different feel for sure . But neither is one is wrong as long as you like it.
I always put the back trem cover under the Floyd when I have to change string or make adjustments. I guess a lot of players keep the off the guitar, so it may not be a solution for everyone, but it works for me.
I had one of these, I smashed it to pieces and after I beat it up really good...Then I took the FR off of it.....the TR-1 wasn't bad once u get the hang of settin it up
Great Video. I have a 92 RG570 and I've had it fretdressed and setup a few times. It's interesting to see the process and feel some guilt for causing you or at least other guitar techs such a pain in the ass! :-) They are great guitars though. I bought mine at 17 and I'm now 41 and never had any real hankering to replace it. I've bought other guitars since but it's still the guitar I play daily. Luv and Peace
Another great vid Davey. Some of those production colors geez, i can see it now. In a secret Ibanez board room meeting "we need a new color" ....How about Blue metallic sparkle? By gum thats a great idea!
Dave, we are gonna have to get you a high gain monster of an amp and teach you the basics of modern extreme metal. It would be funny to watch if nothing else!
Great vid dave very helpful :) but i have to say after owning a jem/RG with the same bridge it isnt in the right spot. Edge bridges have a mark at the knife edge where they are removed and that mark is the alignment point to where everything is measured for the trem action and whether the bridge is parralel unless im seeing this at bad angle and lighting the geometry is different love the vids man keep up the amazing work
Thanks. I'm trying to setup a really old but nice, Washburn MG-24. It's not the same guitar but i guess we can say that it is the same type of guitar. I think i'm using much less relief than what you suggest (around 0.20 mm). It buzzes too much in the low E in the first half of the neck. thanks again for the tip.
Why is it that all guitar repairers cannot do the low pro edge, or edge trem system? I actually explained to the guy who refretted my Ibanez Jem777 in fine detail how it was supposed to sit (I had the thing for 30 years, so should know) and he just wasn't having it at all. He wanted it flat with the saddles pointing in the air and that was that, he couldn't accept that the base (bottom) of the trem system (not the top) should be level with the body and there are actually groves on the side of it to guide you. So after paying him to set it up, I had to redo it at home.
You can adjust the post heights with the strings on, just block it off and loosen the strings up a bit though. The idea is to have the least amount of tension on the knife edge posts.
You are incorrect sir...The idea is not to have the least amount of tension on the knife edge posts...In fact the idea is to have no amount of tension on the knife edge posts...as any tension on the knife edges and posts will dull the knife edges and ruin the taper on the posts...
@@mark006868 You’re dulling the knife edges just by using the bar. There’s not going to be any meaningful difference in tension between very loose strings and no strings.
@@5urg3x In fact, with no string tension...there will be 0% dulling of the knife edges...which is a meaningful difference and is the goal when you factor in that an electric guitar has anywhere from 85lbs to 250lbs of string tension on each string...furthermore....you must have me confused with someone who cares what you may or may not think...

Most people set the action too low on these rg's. Even if there is minimal buzz with the strings pretty much laying on the frets you will get bad sustain, choked notes etc. Ibanez guitars are capable of exceptional tone and sustain if they're set up well.
I'll never understand who thought it would be a good idea to have solder etc. in guitars like that -- maybe back in the day but not anymore -- it should be like the connections on the inside of a computer -- connector cables, plug them in, etc... I know this is an old video but if anyone is interested they should check out solder less connection kits for guitars -- they are SO much nicer, so much easier to work with...the sound is exactly the same. I prefer the Seymour Duncan Liberator system, but there are others out there that are just as nice.
Gibson's system is VERY nice! EMG also has a really cool one. The great thing about Gibson's though is if you're a fan of their pickups you can swap them out very easily until you find a set that you like -- no soldering required!
GFS also makes it an option to install it on their pickups. Theirs is a little different because it's not pin connectors like EMG, it uses a 4 conductor audio plug and jack
Hey Dave, I have one of these and had the same problem putting 10's on her. So it's back to 9's. A bugger to set up if you're pedantic about the trem being level - cause every time you tune the strings a bit you pull against the springs and trem doesn't sit level then you adjust spring screws and she goes out of tune and around and around till you get to the sweet spot. I also find that putting the lock nut on changes the pitch after tuning the strings. Did you get that happening?
I have one that I play all the time and I'm not sure why. Mine sounds good with DiMarzio pup upgrade. Changing strings one at a time make it changes somewhat easier.
That tremolo was setup wrong. The top of the is baseplate is supposed to be angled on the original Edge (this one) and Edge Lo-Pro. There are lines on the sides of the baseplate that are supposed to be parallel to the top of the body.
I think he means 'in relations ship to' not actually with the bottom up at the top of the bridge cavity. It's easier to simply use the knife edge inserts visible on the side of the bridge. Regardless of how low into the body the bridge is, the knife edge should be at a 90 degree angle to the posts... parallel to the body.
Hi I have a quick question for you Davey. Had a close look at finish on a new guitar i just got . There is one crack I'm concerned about. Looks like someone put it on a table or some flat surface and something was on the table and it cracked. I'm thinking of using he steam trick with the soldering iron to bring out the dint and a tiny amount of superglue to close up the crack. Sound ok to you?
I know that ibanez bridge very well(I've had jem floral since 95) it should have the knife edges 90 degrees to the posts. So that trem sits like a wedge, three springs works fine with 10's then.
Nice video man! I wanted to point out that you have that trem way too much into the body. The Original Edge trem, which is on that guitar, has to have the knife edges parallel to the body. Go to Steve Vai's site>the machines>EVO special and click hardware. It will show a good photo of what the trem angle should be with the Original EDGE trem. Also I have .11s with just 3 springs in arrow formation on a 97 RG570. You put springs where screws are supposed to go for the spring holder.
I own this exact same guitar, finish and everything. They play great, sound half decent with the semi-upgraded pickups, but ugliest finish ever imagined. I'm gonna strip mine down and put a light laquer finish on it.
Hey Dave, I got a Carvin dc127 recently and when I went to fix the truss buzz, I noticed that I need a hex WRENCH not a key, a wrench man! It's a 5 sided bolt sticking out of the the thing. Do you know a cheap way to turn this thing? I don't want to buy a whole set or succumb to a fancy/expensive Carvin official tool.
I have an Ibanez roadstar series 2 (quite old) never had any problems, the wiring inside is original and done well, some later ibanez guitars and bass's are not so clever!
i got SA-260 and i got 10 on it. needed to get screws deeper cause havent got extra spring. its got trem on it but when ill use anything on it, even hand it goes out of tune. means my spring tenstion is wrong ?
Forgot to add; Original Edge and Lo-Pro have 'locking studs'. There is a screw inside the posts that locks the post to the body. Uses a 1.5 mm allen wrench. If you can't get the bridge low enough, make sure those are loosened.
Kinda seems like its a chopped up ibanez, I had an early 1990s version had the same trem where u tighten the block from the very back & where the neck & body meet it had the scoop away in the back of the body bolted neck but it had a plate, quit playing sold my gear started playing again the trem was changed where ur hex screws to tighten down the block to string changes are now in the saddle & the neck to body is rounded off w/o a plate paid about $900.00 for the 92-93 version back then
I have two Ibanez rg 5ex1's both set up parallel and two rg 470AH's. One is set up parallel the other is angled. I bought one RG 5ex1 straight of the wall that was parallel. Guitar center never sets up their guitars. I also had one professionally set up by an Authorized Ibanez service center and they set it up parallel. I didn't tell them to do it that way. I know it supposed to be angled. But It plays just fine no issues with the tremolo. So it is possible....that's all I'm saying..
Does one person send you many of the same guitar at once? Two RG's in two days, but we never see them otherwise. Also with the two Fenders in D standard in one week, too.

My dads uncle hand made it in the 50's, I dint have the heart to thro it out so I glued a tambourine on the back and painted it gold and only have the E,A,andG strings on it. So fun to play now check it out if you have time and let me know what you think but. Last Man Alive Project (24 carot gold guitar) TKS but keep up the good work

play dat funky music whyte boi! hehe xD nice guitar tho man and nice work on it. it'd be great if you were local cuz i'd hire you to do mine. guitar center is kind of a rip off and never quite gets it right. i always have to make some minor adjustments myself. which i'm mostly ok with i just have a somewhat irrational fear of truss rods. :/
Yeah I realised that just after I commented :/ To be honest the only appreciable difference you would notice is the trem wont be able to pull up scream quite like as much as Satch or Vai.
Can anyone tell me what that triangular shaped black plastic widget is on the butt end of the guitar @ 9:12. I recently bought a bass (Hohner B2A) that had one of these stuck to it and I assumed it was wall hanging type of thing, but obviously not....Anyone?

It's funny how so many techs (or people that claim to be techs) don't know how to set up an Original, or Low-Pro Edge. I've had techs in stores argue with me about it when I point out that one of the guitars they are working on has the bridge angle set incorrectly.
just noticed I commented here a year ago ... btw Im pretty sure the original edge and low pros were not meant to be set up flush to the guitar bodies like that. To sit them truly parallel means that the bridge should have a slanted edge that isn't flush with the guitar body. it's how they are designed...might be why you were having issues setting it up because essentially you set it up with a backwards leaning tilt to the bridge.

Ibanez player for 18 years, here. Second this 100%.
the lo pro's are supposed to be flush, the og edge's are not. at any rate, the "blade"/knife edges are what are supposed to be parallel.
Not really set up right for the edge trem ,the under side of the bridge is supposed to be parallel to the string plane.
Thanks for the tip about not adjusting the bridge height with all the strings on. That makes a lot of sense and I (nor any people I've learned about Floyds from) never considered it, I will definitely keep it in mind.

The paintjob was only produced for 2 years because the flakes would clog the paint guns so its kind of a rarer finish than other guitars.
That Ibanez is the same one I had back in 1997.
Still have mine!
Hi Dave,
what is your opinion about the old Aria Pro II(Matsumoku era) Japanese made Guitars?
Forgot to add; Original Edge and Lo-Pro have 'locking studs'.
There is a screw inside the posts that locks the post to the body. Uses a 1.5 mm allen wrench.
If you can't get the bridge low enough, make sure those are loosened.
Rockinger have extra hard springs, they are great when you want 2 springs action, or as here more tension is needed. FWIW
What gauge are you using to determine neck relief? 0.010?
Also with the two Fenders in D standard in one week, too.
you are wearing the t shirt i have been searching for for a year where did you get it please help
What would you say is better a rg320qs (which I own) or a rg270dx ?
hey whats good for cleanning guitar necks and my string gauge is 10-52 also it 25.5 inch scale a schecter demon also how you fixed the tone nob a friend of mine tried to fix it but turned it into a volume nob so now i have to volume nobs
Cool video man !
Does anybody know the exact model of that guitar?
I have a rg350DX but my whammy bar keeps falling out is this normal
Trem angle is wrong. Original Edge has an angled top, use the knife edges visible on the side to line up the plate.
Ibanez 4 life :).....rg`s and jems are my favorates
dave, do you or anyone have any good tips on learning to play guitar? i picked one up myself and am trying to learn, but its not too easy :P. im a big fan of metal, and would love to learn how to play
What would be the recommended neck relief for a guitar like this one?
im not a big ibanz fan but i do love that blue flake sparkle
Hi Dave, I want to do a Stratocaster project. Where can I buy really high quality body and neck for my project? Thanks!
Excuse my ignorance, but what is the ground wire on the spring claw for?
hey Dave Love the info and Canadian humor. Check out the Shitar I got. My dads uncle hand made it in the 50's, I dint have the heart to thro it out so I glued a tambourine on the back and painted it gold and only have the E,A,andG strings on it. So fun to play now check it out if you have time and let me know what you think but. Last Man Alive Project (24 carot gold guitar) TKS but keep up the good work
I agree. I just wish I could afford a new guitar right now. :(
Did You Make A Mistake Dave. Is Your Block Parallel?
Hi Dave, where in Canada are you? How can I contact you for a guitar setup? thanks
That's a great color. Flakes are a bit too big though. Smaller flakes or go metallic and it would be choice.
i need ibanez grg 170dx selector warning please halp me
can you please help I have a joe satch Ibanez js 100 I use 10 gage elixir nano coated strings but it does t lock down it seems like it does but when I use the bar the it like slips at the locking screws and it doesn't matter how hard I screw it down can you help
***** that's what I was thinking its because they are coated at the 8 gage uncoated strings locked down
No problem. just re-do it all/ Also replace that crap 5-way switch with a solid brass body one.
I fix stuff like this every day and more.
play dat funky music whyte boi! hehe xD
nice guitar tho man and nice work on it. it'd be great if you were local cuz i'd hire you to do mine. guitar center is kind of a rip off and never quite gets it right. i always have to make some minor adjustments myself. which i'm mostly ok with i just have a somewhat irrational fear of truss rods.
I recently bought a bass (Hohner B2A) that had one of these stuck to it and I assumed it was wall hanging type of thing, but obviously not....Anyone?
that's it then as mine is an 80's model it was probably made when they had some quality control "most" new guitars look like they were done in a hurry with crap stuff
I BEEN HAD!!
Ibenhad
Never forget that Gibson add, hahaaaa
soo..., you don't level the frets on your guitars.?
+PtolemaiosLS Guy probably didn't want to cough the dough for it or maybe Dave let the guy know about the fret thing. Here i am replying to a year old comment.
He will if the owner wants to pay for it.
I don't know what people see in a sparkly guitar. Good repair video though Crazy nut and trem.
I owned an Ibanez with that blankety blank whammy bridge once ... never again.
davey4557 can you please tell me what's the name of those pickups?
It's funny how so many techs (or people that claim to be techs) don't know how to set up an Original, or Low-Pro Edge.
I've had techs in stores argue with me about it when I point out that one of the guitars they are working on has the bridge angle set incorrectly.
11's, holy crap.
